Dear Members, I am writing to inform you that the LIS-Forum discussion list was down for over a month due to a hardware-related issue. We understand that the LIS-Forum discussion list is a vital platform for Indian library professionals, and we regret any inconvenience caused by the downtime. However, I am pleased to inform you that the service is now up and running, and we are working to ensure minimal downtime during such outages in the future. Thank you for your patience and understanding during this time. We value your participation in LIS-Forum and will continue to provide you with a valuable platform for discussion and the exchange of ideas. With best regards, Francis Francis Jayakanth Moderator, LIS-Forum JRD Tata Memorial Library IISc, Bengaluru -- This message has been scanned for viruses and dangerous content by MailScanner, and is believed to be clean.

How much does India collectively pay major journal publishers annually towards subscriptions to journals?
by Subbiah Arunachalam 11 Apr '23

11 Apr '23

Friends, I need some information. Some members of this forum, esp. those who hold senior administrative positions or who are involved in consortia negotiations, may know. How much do Indian institutions collectively pay each one of the major journal publishers [such as Elsevier, Springer, and Wiley] annually, say in 2022, towards journal + database subscriptions? The NIRF data gives info on 'Library spending' as a whole. Here is an example entry: Indian Institute of Technology Madras, Library spending in 2019-20, Rs 181,528,391. Almost all of us in academia and other research-performing institutions know that many 'high-impact-factor' journals published by these publishers are priced high. Most subscriptions to these journals are paid for from public funding, but most of us (including scientists and librarians) do not know how much we pay. Inspiration story for the library community.
by Duryodhan Nahak 20 Feb '23

*Class 6 student sets up library at city police station* *This is the second library that the HPS student has set up**; the first one was at the MNJ Cancer Hospital during the COVID-19 pandemic; she hopes to open at least five walk-in libraries* The Hindu Bureau, HYDERABAD, 19.02.23 She never asked for toys; her books were her toys. She read about 1,500 books in five or six years, says a proud Sateesh Kumar Jagadeesan, a private healthcare employee, of his 11-year-old daughter Akarshana. On Saturday, Akarshana, a class 6 student of Hyderabad Public School here, just opened her second library as part of her mission to set up at least five free walk-in libraries. The first one was at the MNJ Cancer Hospital, Lakdi-ka-pul, during the COVID-19 pandemic. The second one, surprisingly, was decided at Sanathnagar police station. “It was her idea. On December 23, we were in that area to buy a Christmas star. The place is usually busy and she thought people passing by would be interested in picking up a book. We soon walked into the police station and talked to the inspector, and within a week she wrote to Cyberabad police commissioner Stephen Raveendra for approval,” Mr. Sateesh Kumar explained. The collection of 829 books in the reception area in Sanathnagar police station include fiction, non-fiction, general knowledge and some 149 books in Telugu language. For Akarshana, who says the next stop in her library mission is the juvenile home for girls, the love of reading and helping people gives her satisfaction. Of about 4,800 books collected from several donors in the past two years, she still has some 2,800 books for library purpose. The sixth-grade student, for her initiatives and social enthusiasm, has earlier received appreciation from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan, IT Minister K.T. Rama Rao, and several officers in the government. “I aspire to become an astrochemist,” she says. With Regards *Duryodhan Nahak* *Asst. Tushar Popat tushar.popat at rapidradio.co.in Wed Feb 15 18:02:21 IST 2023 Dear Librarians, Namaste from RapidRadio Solutions. We are pleased to announce *"RFID Workshop - Knowledge Series II"* - an initiative/effort from RapidRadio to share the knowledge of *RFID Technology & its Integration with LMS* with the community. The workshop sessions shall be conducted at different institutes across India between 30th Sept 2021 to 31st March 2023. Detailed list of institutes and respective workshop dates will be available on https://rapidradio.co.in/library/workshop/. Keep checking the same for updated workshops. *The upcoming RFID Workshop is at Patna Women's College, Patna, Bihar on 25 February 2023.* RapidRadio along this journey of 15 long years have acquired more than 250 library clients across India & surrounding countries. We are thankful to the library fraternity for trusting this Indian RFID manufacturer and helping us to become one of the leading players in the RFID Automation market for libraries. Over these years we have seen that the decision to purchase RFID systems & executing the project, after the decision is made, has been one of the toughest jobs for the librarian & the institute as a whole. We strongly feel that librarians who have already implemented RFID in their libraries should come forward and share their experiences with fellow librarians on how they go about this difficult decision making process. We wish to facilitate and encourage such experience sharing during workshop sessions. The complete list of speakers will be available on the web page who would be speaking at different sessions. We welcome one and all from the Library fraternity to participate in this event through filling up the registration form.
