Sir, May I know that: if there is any governemnt/UGC norms or rules for weeding out of the obsolete books?. how much books we can weed out and dispose off at a time and after what duration we should weed out the books. whether we can weed out books regularly/every year or after a gap of few years. EPT Award to Dr Francis Jayakanth - Congratulations

Dear Professionals, Let us congratulate Dr Francis Jayakanth of National Centre for Science Information, Bangalore for having been chosen as the winner for the Electronic Publishing Trust for Development award in the first year of its establishment for playing a major role in Open Access movement among the developing countries. EPT has considered 8 aspects of contributions concerned to Institutional Repositories. Unlike other countries setting up of IRs is lead by LIS professionals in India. As seen by myself, the winner of this EPT award Dr Francis has contributed extensively in all 8 aspects specified by EPT. Apart from setting up of India's number one IISc-IR, Dr Francis has trained a number of students through NCSI , as well others for setting up of IRs. While his work has given a wide exposure to IISc research output, the Institute is yet to recognise his contributions suitably. It is unfortunate that NCSI is virtually closed. The legacy of my friend Late Dr. T.B. Rajashekar, one of the India's best LIS teacher and researcher, who was responsible in starting the NCSI course came to an end with his untimely tragic death. While the Institute did not take necessary steps to continue the course, friends like Francis have been doing their best to continue the works and contributions of Dr. Rajashekar. It is common that the person who passed the NET exam, will support for NET and candidate who failed NET, will against for NET exam. I cleared the NET exam in the year 1994. My personal suggestion to NET aspirants that 3Ps are behind success of any competitive examination i.e Preparation, Practice and Presentation. Let try and get success. Dear friends, Can anybody guess how much income UGC made from conducting NET/JRF examination from 1986 to 2011 ? Here is some information obtained by RTI Act. My query to UGC's Office : Total amount collected for UGC- NET/JRF examination from 2005 to 2010. Reply- Rs. 61,18,23,638.51 Total expenditure for UGC- NET/JRF examination from 2005 to 2010. Reply- Rs. 27,93.09,983.00 What it means ? For the six years UGC made a profit of Rs. 33,25,13,655.51 from the examination. Then estimate the amount made by UGC from the unemployed youth of India during the last 25 years. The profit may come to a minimum of 100 crores !!! You may prepare well, write well but fails for increasing their profit. UGC have to answer, what they have done with the money ??? AND Who gave them permission for this public robbery ??? Theme: "Evolving Serials - Managing, discovering and supplying highly innovative and dynamic content" IFLA WLIC 2012, August 11-17, 2012, Helsinki, Finland The Serials and Other Continuing Resources Section (SOCRS) invites colleagues to submit proposals for its two-hour open session at the IFLA Congress in Helsinki on the theme of Evolving Serials. Gone are the days of modest electronic journals! Serials are evolving quickly and now contain linked data, visualizations, actionable QR codes, streaming media and other multimedia assets. They are delivered to end users via traditional digital platforms, and also via apps and mobile devices. Are libraries ready? How are serials librarians embracing these new technologies? We invite papers that address the following issues: • New developments in serials publishing • Innovative delivery and discovery tools for the user • Storage and preservation challenges and solutions for new serials types • Case studies on challenges that librarians face with these changes • Initiatives and projects on library linked data • Adoption of mobile technology for serials access • Measuring and assessing dynamic content Proposals must include the following information: 1. "The academic publisher Elsevier has attracted controversy for its high prices, the practice of bundling journals for sale to libraries and its support for legislation such as SOPA and the Research Works Act. Fields medal-winning mathematician Tim Gowers decided to go public with a blog post describing how he'll no longer have anything to do with Elsevier journals, and suggesting that a public website where mathematicians and scientists could register their support for an Elsevier boycott would further the cause. UGC-NET: necessary changes and amendments

Dear Sir/Madam, With a response to current debate on the amendment of UGC -NET pattern and views,I want to tell that any national level exam (GATE,CAT,MAT,JEE ,NETetc.) are mainly structured to measure the intellectual faculty of any student of any discipline.So even the NET exam for LIS is also structured in this way.There is no confusion over that.So I never support that at least UGC-NET is a "Why this kolkaveri Di" joke if objective type questions are given in Paper-3 .It doesn't sound logical.Moreover,I like to say that if objective types questions are given,there is more opportunity to test the knowledge of a student at a level of more depth and with more extension. I personally thank SIMERJIT KAUR and SUNNY JOSEPH for sharing their experience and these should be an eye-opener for us.After all objective questions in the paper makes the competition tougher not a 'Kolaveri di' joke of mugging up the whole syllabus.Also I like to add that,this initiative of UGC will welcome more experimentation with the subjects,embrace more new concepts from different fields and after all encourage the students to learn more and please understand that from on NET has become tougher than the previous ones. The post graduate's� , according to U.G.C if they do not acquire 55 % then what is the rule for their� upgradation & qualification� fulfillment to get the status as equivalent to U.G.C.- NET /SET exams?� What is the criteria for their selection & upgradation in Semi/ Govt / Research organisations/ DST / etc?
