Dear Friend, There are existing rules in Government for dealing with missing books from libraries. As per General Financial Rules of Govt. of India, missing of five books out of 1000 books issued/consulted in a year may be taken as reasonable loss from a library which can be written off. Similar rules also exist in Kerala Government., 0.5% of annual issue/reference can be written off in case of loss. But your case is self financing college where Govt. Rules do not apply and the decision of management shall be final. If the management opt for recovering the loss from students, is it good for library staff ??? Library train captivates kids

HATLEY -- Children visiting the Hatley branch of the Marathon County Public Library have been captivated by the library's latest addition. An electric Thomas the Train set now hovers high above the heads of library patrons. The train, a donation to the library from an anonymous donor, runs on a circular rail suspended from the ceiling. Library assistant Karen Johnson said the train is a big hit. "The kids absolutely love it. So do the parents," she said. Alyiah Taylor-Medina, 5, of Weston stood transfixed as she watched the train go around during one of her weekly visits to the library. Aliyah typically spends several days a week in Hatley where her uncle, Jeremiah Taylor, 32, of Hatley brings her to story hour every Tuesday morning. "I love the library," Alyiah said. "I love the stuffed animals and all the stories and the train, too." Johnson said the library asked community members, through a newsletter early last year, to consider donating a train for the children's section. When presented with the train set in May, she said she was pleasantly surprised by the gift. "I wasn't expecting anything quite so nice. This is quite a valuable train," Johnson said. Three additional anonymous donors stepped forward to donate the time and talent necessary to build a track, which includes mountains and a tunnel. Johnson's husband, Glenn Johnson, also of Hatley, designed the suspension system to hang the train from the ceiling, well out of harm's way. The train, which moves forward and backward at varying speeds, is operated by a switch that is out of the children's reach but easily accessible for most parents. Johnson said the library constantly searches for ways to capture children's interest, and the train was a perfect way to do just that. "The train brings the kids in and keeps them quiet, too," Johnson said. IASLIC (Indian Association of Special Libraries and Information Centres) welcomes and appreciates the following decision of UGC for Submission of NET Application in Off-Line Mode. We express our heartfelt thanks to UGC for issuing such an important order to help LIS students. “Due to unprecedented increase in the number of candidates willing to apply during the last days of online registration for the ensuing NET examination scheduled to be held on 24th June, 2012, it has been observed that the students are facing difficulty in submitting online application. In order to overcome this problem and keeping in view the paucity of time, UGC has decided that such candidates, who have paid the prescribed fee through Bank Challan by the due date, i.e., 2nd May, 2012 and are not able to submit their application online, may now apply in offline mode. Dear All It is very good news that UGC started OFF LINE mode of application for NET June 2012. Dear All, An interesting article 'The Decline and Fall of the Library Empire' points out to realities librarianship and libraries would be facing in the near future owing to digital revolution. The author explains how libraries jumped to the bandwagon of new technologies as and when introduced, but failed to make expected impact owing to limited resources and not matching with the capabilities of big players like Google, Amazon etc. According to the author 'Each of the services we’ve provided in the digital arena has been — or is being — superseded by new and better technologies or by other organizations better suited to deliver services electronically'. Dear Friends, Many UGC Aspirants complaints about the non availability of ugcnetonline website for the submission of NET applications...I think it is due to the under performance and over load (or non performance)of UGC's server at Delhi...As per the latest statistics more than 10 lakhs candidates are appearing for the NET June 2012 in different subjects...I am very sorry to tell that UGC is not ready to consider the grievances of the aspirants , they extent the last date for online submissions for just two days....is it enough ? .....many of my friends are tried to submit the application on late night and early morning but failed... The very interesting thing is that Qualifying UGC NET is more easy compared to the submission of NET online submission... I request, who have access to UGC head qtrs should try to extend the date at least up to 5th May . It was her doctoral research that brought her face to face with the working of the Indian archives. The Public Record Act which was passed in 1993 regulates the management, administration and preservation of public records. The talk will highlight weaknesses in the Public Record Act in dealing with present scenario. The Researcher believes that various government departments have little clue regarding the preservation and maintenance of the valuable historical documents that are being look after by them. The art of conserving, classifying and weeding out of these documents largely remains unknown to most of them. It would not be an exaggeration to state that the Indian archives are facing a deep crisis as far the maintenance of its public records is concerned. The talk reveals the dismal condition of archives in India. It further seeks new ways i.e. what more needs to be done in order to preserve the documental legacy of India. About the Speaker Ms. Shilpi Rajpal is PhD Scholar in the Department of History, University of Delhi. At present, she is in final phase of her thesis writing entitled ‘Madness and Delinquency in Colonial North India’ 1850-1947’. She was awarded the University Teaching Assistantship in 2009 for the period of four years in the University of Delhi. She has also taught as a Guest Lecturer in Department of Germanic and Romance Studies, Arts Faculty, University of Delhi (August 2007 – March 2009). Dear All It is very heart breaking that candidates who wish to apply for the UGC-NET june 2012, they are helpless. UGC started online mode of application but from the middle of the last week their SERVER is too slow. Server is not taking any application. There are no other option available for application. Who have already deposited application fee but due to the server problem of UGC, they are is big trouble. Last day, UGC extended the date, but we don't think this will solve the problem of SERVER. Dr. Amjad Ali, Deputy Librarian, Aligarh Muslim University, Aligarh has achieved a rare distinction by getting the D. Litt. degree awarded on the 5th of April 2012 joining the D. Litt. club with just one person in front of him. Dr. Ali has got the degree from Sambalpur University, Odisha under the supervision of Prof. Krushna Chandra Panda, Head of the Department, Library and Information Science who completed higher education in the United States of America. The topic of of Dr. Ali's research was the Status of Digital Libraries in India: An Analytical Study. Dr. Ali has studied the initiatives of Digitization in Indian libraries and after comparison has suggested the policy and the methodology that has to be followed for enhancing creation of digital resources. Dr. Ali presented his thesis in the open session which was attended by the examiners, faculty, experts, university faculty, students and the public. The interactive session was full to its capacity and the intervention by the audience was remarkable.
