Dear friends, I do not agree with Mr. Vimal Kumar that all who pass UGC-NET are mere calligraphers. But of course, good hand writing and presentation skills play vital roles in success of any written exam, along with the subject knowledge and language skills. At the same time some phrases such as "I am not agree" or "the large number of response by the candidates against this new format shows how they were enthusiastic about this objective type" etc are testimonies about the language skills of NET qualified persons. Personally, I plead for full- proof system whether it may be descriptive or objective. My charge against the descriptive system is about its valuation procedures which do not permit re-valuation in any case. In such a system the invisible evaluator who claims to be the "absolute authority" is at full freedom and the candidate is at their mercy or luck plays a major role. When I requested for photocopy and re-valuation of may answer scripts after June 2010 exam through Kerala High Court, UGC obviously lied in the Court that my answer papers were destroyed as my letter for preserving my papers was not received in their office. The result of the exam was published on 8 th October and I sent my request for preservation of my papers on 9th October by speed post. When I produced the evidence of its receipt by UGC's office, they were voiceless. Getting copies of answer papers of three toppers, publishing answer keys in web site were also my prayers. I contended the case myself and the case was failed due to my lack of experience in court procedures. But due to the decision of Hon.Supreme Court of India, any examining agency is bound to provide the copies of answer books under RTI Act. I think the judicial decisions have bearings on the new pattern of UGC-NET also. You may remember that in June 2010 NET exam only 11 candidates passed in English. There were wide discussions in campuses and in media about the result. See what happened in DEC-2010 exam. More than 350 candidates in English passed NET. Whether the standard of English in India was increased to 3000% just in six months !!! I was informed by UGC that more than 30 crores is with them as "profit" earned by six years by conducting NET exam and UGC is unwilling to disclose the earnings since the beginning of the test. The case is pending with Central Information Commission. There for I have strong evidences to believe that everything is not fine with UGC. As Hon. Courts opined that secrecies tempt to corrupt. Transparency or sun light is the best disinfectant. Dear Friends, Primarily it is the prerogative of the employer to decide whom should be appointed and to fix the qualifications etc. We know the works in libraries and many of us have good working skills in computer based library technologies. To my knowledge library science departments were wooing computer science, since 1990's, the beginning of the internet era, much ahead of other teaching departments thinking and planning for computerised systems. Now-a-days, most of the students pass out MLIS possess good competence in library technologies along with traditional library and information skills. On comparing various professionals in their ICT competence, it is sure that library professionals are second only to computer professionals. But computer professionals have only computing skills. No information skills.I recollect an experience in my college when my Principal wanted an information from the University's web site and the staff member with M.Sc. computer science could not provide the information, though he perused the web site; but I could furnish it quickly. They are more competent in technologies and ignorant about information or knowledge or its management. Instead of "information", computer persons usually use the term "data". It is fact that many of the persons in the top level management of any organisation in India are "veterans" who awe about computers or its techniques. They look the computer people with great admiration and many of the veteran group are not even ashamed in openly admitting about their ignorance of computer techniques. At the same time many of them underestimate librarians because of their common sense thinking. They vociferously opine that library science is nothing but common sense and the job of a librarian can be performed by any literate person. In India librarians are generally the under-utilised professionals. The main job of a librarian,that is , reference or information service is not popularised in many libraries including the highly staffed university libraries. Thus the users see librarian as mere book clerks. In fact, the computer persons can not operate a library and he can install a digital library software but can not create and mange a digital library. The thing which is likely to happen is the computer person shall get appointment as library cum informatics officer and he shall join for library science distance education. It is the duty of professional organisations like ILA, IASLIC etc to take up the matter to concerned authorities and if failed fight legally. Urgent Librarian request - Please advice

Dear all, I am looking for a professional librarian urgently, who can take care of our library, its personal for a library which is at the residence. Since I am not well versed with this industry, I have listed a few things which I could think of; may be the professional could add a few things to the list. We have the Cybrarian software which they can use too. The person can visit twice a month: a) Classifying the newly purchased books. b) Cataloging, printing & pasting spine labels. c) Checking for mis-shelved books & placing them in their correct place on the shelves in the library, offices, 3 children’s rooms & 1 common children’s play area. 95% of the work is at the residence which is in Worli and 5% which is very rare will be in Lower Parel. The commuting distance is at a maximum of 15 minutes. Please advice on priority if you know anyone who would be interested in taking this up? Dear Sir/Madam, This is in response to Vimal Kumar post on “Response from NET aspirants, 24th June”. The main intention of raising issue with regard to the new format of UGC NET exam was purely UGC introduced/switched over to objective type questions from previous descriptive format (paper 3), without consulting academia or students. Can we allow this to happen in a democratic society? UGC time and again flouted its own decisions and introduced new rules and regulations without much discussion in public forum. The introduction of new NET exam pattern was one such example. If the new format is fine and students are happy, it is welcome but in a democratic society each individual has its own views or points to make and they have the rights to do so. Let us not make this too personal. Challenging previous NET qualified candidates is not good in any way. Have heard that the new format is much easier than previous one. Some of them were happy and some others had a different view. Everyone is unique in their own way. Vimal you have born and brought up in a state where there is space for dissent and Karl Marx a household name. I would like to quote Marx and conclude this piece “Ruthless Criticism of Everything”, which is good for the democratic society. Whether we are employing these highly qualified professionals only for counter duty and issue and return of books for several years? 3. If that is happening, after a long period of issue and return only experience, what technical and managerial excellence they can gain?. 4. Whether our Library Schools (other than DRTC) are able to effectively train LIS professionals to manage the e-resources. Whether we can manage an e-resource only library confidently? 5. Whether our Library Science teachers and senior professionals are sincerely looking into our real personnel and professional problems and trying for solution?.� It is a grave fact that our professionals are quarreling each other mainly because of system generating issues like appointment, promotion, qualification, etc. 6. Presently, the growing popularity of online social networks has provided an opportunity to analyze these well-studied phenomena over different networks at different scales. Generally, a social network can be considered as a collection of actors and their interactions (connections). In signed networks, there is an explicit show of trust (positive) or distrust (negative) among the actors. That is, an actor can designate others as friends or foes. Examples of signed networks include the Slashdot Zoo network, Epinions etc. In a social network, actors tend to connect with each other on the basis of their perceived social hierarchy. The concept of social hierarchy can be stated as the emergence of a tree-like structure comprising of actors in a top-down fashion in the order of their ranks, describing a specific parent-child relationship, viz. child trusts parent. However, owing to the presence of positive as well as negative interactions in signed networks, deriving trust hierarchies is a non-trivial challenge. We argue that traditional notions are insufficient to derive hierarchies underlying signed networks. To build hierarchies in signed networks, we introduce two interpretations of trust/goodness namely 'presence of trust (good)' and 'lack of distrust (not bad)'. In order to develop a hierarchy signifying both trust and distrust more effectively, the above interpretations are combined and the actors are arranged according to their aggregate deserve (trust) values. We then introduce a hypothesis for building hierarchies based on deserve values while preserving the locality of interactions between actors. In this sense, even though a hierarchy represents an aggregate social structure, the relationships are formed from local structures. The hierarchies obtained using our hypothesis are said to be locality-preserving, with each hierarchy representing a well-defined local community. Each such hierarchy contains a community representative at the root. Modeling such locality-preserving hierarchies in trust networks finds applications in community detection, information dissemination and locality-based governance for the population. Dear all and respected ones. I thank each and everyone who have shown their concern regarding my earlier message. In this regard i have following observations: 1. First and foremost Library jobs must be reserved for Library Professionals like the Doctors job in the Hospital. 2. We must sincerley follow ethics of librarianship without following the ethics of Computer professionals. 3. Librarianship must be the Master and technolgy its Servant and not the otherway. 4.If we go too much after technology we shall be nowhere, as if like the small fish in the big ocean full of Sharks. 5. Technology should be the means and not an end to the Library professional values and ethics. 6. Many of us are unknowingly welcoming the dvelopments which encourages People from other profession (one can guess easily!!!) to encroach our field of practice. 7. At this hour of crisis we must be united locally, nationally and internationally. 8. Professional association must not sleep in the hour of crisis. These are the forums through which we can raise our concern in a proactive manner. 9. Hi AllI am surprised to see the Note "Candidates Who have attended regular courses and obtained relevant degree in Library and Information Science are preferred. Candidates with degree obtained through distance education mode may please ignore this advertisement". That too at this age of self learning! I cannot understand why people are prejudiced about the distance learning system. Does the mode of study really matters or the knowledge or skills attained by the professional matters. Why not try the candidates and see whether they are qualified enough or not? Many advertisements for various job opportunities are for regular candidates only. Then why not abolish the system of distance education? Does it mean once we acquire any degree the learning stops unless you study through regular course? Do you really believe that all students are taking distance education as an easy way to acquire degrees? What about those who are not much lucky enough to continue their studies through regular mode? How can we say some one who completed any diploma/graduation/post graduation by distance mode is inferior to those who did it as a regular course? Universities like IGNOU has got an excellent course structure and study materials. The problem is not with the system of distance education, but with the individuals concerned. I don't think one needs to attend college or university today to gain knowledge on any subject. As LIS professionals, we should be the first to realise this fact. Move afoot to revive library culture Mysore: Even as the world is going gaga over digitization of library resources, the department of Library and Information Sciences, Manasagangotri, has taken lead in bringing the research tradition back. With an aim of capturing users' interests towards the use of library resources, three books that are in the form of research thesis, were released here on Wednesday. The books were penned by researchers Dinesh K S, R Guruprasad and Khaiser Nikam, chairperson, DOS in Library and Information Sciences. These books act as an excellent incentive for the future researchers that deal with the availability of library material in the universities along with an exhaustive literature review, Khaiser Nikam said. Dinesh K S, author of the Strategic Management of Engineering College Libraries in Karnataka, said it is an extensive study on the means and ways of attracting the students to the library that are deserted in the internet age. Dear Library Professionals, Let me share few points on the opinion of Mr. Gafoor as DOOMSDAY!!! nearing for our Profession. 1. What are the jobs our fully qualified (MLISc + NET + PhD+PGDCA etc.) library professionals doing in many of the University Libraries in Kerala or other states? 2. Whether we are employing these highly qualified professionals only for counter duty and issue and return of books for several years? 3. If that is happening, after a long period of issue and return only experience, what technical and managerial excellence they can gain?. 4. Whether our Library Schools (other than DRTC) are able to effectively train LIS professionals to manage the e-resources. Whether we can manage an e-resource only library confidently? 5. Whether our Library Science teachers and senior professionals are sincerely looking into our real personnel and professional problems and trying for solution?. It is a grave fact that our professionals are quarreling each other mainly because of system generating issues like appointment, promotion, qualification, etc. 6. The Govt. of Kerala run schools without effective libraries and librarians. Now we are arguing that CLISc holders are best suit to be posted as School Librarins 7. Then why not we recommend/try Nurses in place of Doctors; Diploma holders in place of Engineers, Degree holders as Asst. Professors? So, this is high time to re-structure our system.
