Fwd: MIT expands its D2O model
by Subbiah Arunachalam 19 Aug '23

19 Aug '23

Friends, Here is an interesting news story. The Direct to Open (or D2O) model of distributing books published by the MIT Press has entered the second year and many more titles will be added this year. https://publishingperspectives.com/2023/08/open-access-mit-press-to-expand-… Other publishers, especially university and society publishers, would do well to follow this model. This action of MIT (similar to the Subscription to Open or S2O model of Annual Reviews Inc. who expect to make all their 51 journals S2O by year end) is in line with Mahatma Gandhi's vision of Trusteeship :Those who can afford should take care of those who cannot. Best wishes, Arun

Re: [LIS-Forum] International symposium on "Digital Libraries: Sustainable Development in Education" at NDLI, IIT, Kharagpur
by Subbiah Arunachalam 14 Aug '23

14 Aug '23

Friends, I just saw Mr Hemanta Biswal's mail on the forthcoming international symposium on "Digital Libraries: Sustainable Development in Education," to be held at NDLI, IITKh. I am particularly happy to note the emphasis on ACCESSIBLE EDUCATION. India has taken many initiatives in the area of open and accessible education. The NPTEL programme of IITs (in partnership with IISc) is indeed something the nation can be proud of. [IITM and IISc are now offerng online courses open to all without the need to clear JEE]. SWAYAM is another commendable programme. A friend, a renowned physicist, told me the inspiring story about an autorickshaw driver with middle school education becoming a lecturer in a college after learning through open courses available through SWAYAM and completing his class XII, undergraduate and postgraduate studies (over several years). On the other hand, we also see many universities offering correspondence courses and turning out less than satisfactory graduates in large numbers. I am sure the forthcoming conference at IITKh would discuss the issue of quality control in online education. As we are talking about a G20 event, I would like to draw your attention to the work of Commonwealth of Learning, to which many Indians have made stellar contributions. While we are discussing a conference on 'digital libraries,' I wish to alert you to the general feeling that we host too many conferences, talks and webinars but do not match it with commensurate action. Let us take 'digital,' 'equitable,' 'inclusive' and 'open' access to knowledge. I have lost count of the number of events held in recent times in our country and the number of papers and theses written on this theme. What is the reality? According to COKI, only about 30% of India's research output is available as open access. My colleagues and longtime coauthors Muthu Madhan and Subbiah Gunasekaran tell me that India's share in preprint servers such as arXiv, bioRxiv and medRxiv is also much smaller than one would expect. A very large proportion of papers are published in expensive commercial journals, some after the authors/their institutions or funders have paid a huge article publishing charge. And most researchets in India have no access to these journals. Which means most Indian researchers cannot even read these papers, which in the first place came out of research supported by Indian taxpayers. It would be great if this conference comes up with concrete proposals to make knowledge produced in the G20 countries (and the rest of the world) 'born open' and available to all who want to access it. With best wishes, Subbiah Arunachalam -- This message has been scanned for viruses and dangerous content by MailScanner, and is believed to be clean.

Academic Insitutions - No libraries?
by Padmanabha Vyasamoorthy 06 Aug '23

I saw a full page advertisement from Naranarayan Shastri Institute of Technology offering undergraduate and PG courses in Forensic science, affiliated to the National Forensic Sciences University, Ahmadabad. This was in Times of Indi of 6th August 2023. While listing several facilities / amenities / advantages of the campus, the advertisement is silent about any library facility. I am shocked and pained, as a retired librarian. Can any academic institutions survive without decent libraries? Fwd: News: MIT Press's Direct to Open (D2O) achieves second year goal, opens access to 82 new books in 2023
by Shamprasad Pujar 04 Aug '23

04 Aug '23

FYI ---------- Forwarded message --------- From: Jessica Pellien <pellien(a)mit.edu> Date: Fri, Aug 4, 2023 at 12:10 AM Subject: [IFLA-L] News: News: MIT Press's Direct to Open (D2O) achieves second year goal, opens access to 82 new books in 2023 To: ifla-l(a)iflalists.org <ifla-l(a)iflalists.org> *with apologies for crossposting* Hello – The MIT Press is delighted to share that we have successfully ended our second year of Direct to Open. We are grateful to the 322 libraries who have partnered with us this year and happy that the result is 82 new OPEN scholarly monographs and edited collections. The details are in the press release below and we hope you’ll join us in celebrating this milestone in developing a sustainable and scalable open access publishing model!! If you have questions about D2O or would like to learn more about how you can participate, please contact our library relations team <mitp-library-relations(a)mit.edu>. If you’re looking for MARC records for this collection or a prospectus, please visit the D2O site <https://direct.mit.edu/books/pages/direct-to-open>. Best, Jess MIT Press's Direct to Open (D2O) achieves second year goal, opens access to eighty-two new books in 2023 With 322 participating libraries and new consortium agreements, the D2O publishing model has now opened access to more than 160 scholarly monographs and edited collections. August 3, 2023 (Cambridge, MA)—Thanks to the support of libraries participating in Direct to Open <https://direct.mit.edu/books/pages/direct-to-open> (D2O), the MIT Press will publish its full list (see below) of 2023 scholarly monographs and edited collections open access on the MIT Press Direct platform. Launched in 2021, D2O is a sustainable framework that harnesses the collective power of libraries to support open and equitable access to vital, leading scholarship. D2O moves scholarly books from a solely market-based, purchase model, where individuals and libraries buy single eBooks, to a collaborative, library-supported open access model. Instead of purchasing a title once for a single collection, libraries now have the opportunity to fund them one time for the world through participant fees. “With the successful conclusion of our second year of Direct to Open, we are thrilled to make the Press’s complete list of 2023 monographs openly available,” said Amy Brand, director and publisher of the MIT Press. “This achievement comes at a pivotal time for open science, research, and publishing and would not be possible without the partnership and collaboration of D2O member libraries and consortia. Together, we are proving open access scholarship is not only achievable, but sustainable and scalable.” In its second year, 322 libraries, an increase of 33% from the first year, from around the globe committed to support D2O. Expanding D2O’s international footprint, the Press also entered into all-in agreements with Big Ten Academic Alliance and the Konsortium der sächsischen Hochschulbibliotheken, as well as central licensing and invoicing agreements with Council of Australian University Librarians, Center for Research Libraries; Greater Western Library Alliance, MOBIUS, Northeast Research Libraries, Jisc, Partnership for Academic Library Collaboration and Innovation, SCELC, and Lyrasis. “When we launched Direct to Open two years ago, we passionately believed that taking action to foster a more equitable, sustainable, and open scholarly communication ecosystem was vital and urgent,” said Amy Harris, senior manager, library relations and sales at the MIT Press. “Success was not guaranteed and has required dedicated, hard work to achieve this year; but we have been truly humbled by the support of all of the participating libraries and our consortia partners.” In the coming year, the Press will seek to expand library participation in the model. Supporting libraries not only contribute to opening frontlist titles, but also receive exclusive participation benefits including term access to a backlist collection of over 2,400 titles. To learn more about Direct to Open, or to sign-up to become a participating library, visit direct.mit.edu/books/pages/direct-to-open or contact the MIT Press library partnerships and sales team <mitp-library-relations(a)mit.edu>. *List of MIT Press 2023 monographs and edited collections included in the Direct to Open model:* - *¡Alerta!: Engineering on Shaky Ground* <https://direct.mit.edu/books/oa-monograph/5562/Alerta-Engineering-on-Shaky-…> by Elizabeth Reddy - *Academic Star Wars: Excellence Initiatives in Global Perspective* <https://mitpress.mit.edu/9780262546850/academic-star-wars/> edited by Maria Yudkevich, Philip G.
