His new appointment as Founder VC of Reva University at Bangalore is another feather in his crown. I have seen him for the last 36 years or so as humble librarian initially at BEL later at Mangalore University, then as Professor of Library Science, Director of UGC Academic Staff College, Registrar and four years back as VC at University of Mysore. I had an opportunity of working closely under his guidance as Visiting Professor and Library Adviser at UoM. During his regime as VC the university bagged highest number of projects fetching more than 200 Crores, resulting in enviable infrastructure in terms of buildings, instrumentation, IT, etc. Library, which was in its lowest web got rejuvenated to be one of the best of its kind in the country. A number of new courses were started, both academic and career oriented. For the last 8 years or so he would have slept not more than fours a day as he used sit upon the job seriously irrespective of time and his tiredness. His seriousness and hardworking nature suits much more in private sector. Probably the present assignment private university is a God given reward for his hard work. Do I Ignore this? Research, Publishing & Open Access

Dear All, After reading the posting of Dr. Asundi on 8th March 2013 (Replies to case of Plagiarism and other observations) as a young professional, I had some immediate reaction to express on the prospective of LIS profession in India. But I controlled my feelings and analyzed the changes in profession over the decade after the strong worded editorial of Dr. Abhijit Lahari (http://itt.nissat.tripod.com/itt0201/edtl0201.htm) I rarely attend conferences/seminars but from the mail of Dr. Asundi and subsequent mails, it was obvious that little good has happened in the profession. So I had refrained myself from posting in the forum remembering the words of my beloved ex-teacher late Dr. T.B. Rajashekar, Indian Institute of Science (NSCI) that 'Do more with deeds than words'. But today after reading an article in the journal, International Journal of Advanced Library and Information Science (Open Access), 1(1); 2013, 12pp. (http://scientific.cloud-journals.com/index.php/IJALIS/article/view/Sci-70) which gives wrong data about my serving institute, I could not refrain from posting this mail. In the article, the author's carelessness makes his work null and void and exhibits how casual he/she is. Following are some examples: 1. The number of articles mentioned under methodology is 1423 in Current Science volume 90 to 99 (2006-2010) but the different tables show they are 1698. 2. Under sub-heading "Institution Wise productivity (5.1.8)", the table shows that the articles published by institutes; NIO-323, NGRI-268, PRL-242, BARC-218, IARI-183 (research institutes) and others 369. This is false and contradicting the previous section 5.1.6 where it is mentioned 449 articles for research institutions (26.44%). I strongly object to the false information provided for my institute, National Institute of Oceanography (CSIR). My institute has published only 93 articles during the mentioned period and not 323 articles in Current Science. >From the above article, it is clear that how seriously the research is carried out in the profession. The journal is an open access journal and its standard can be judged from this paper. I am not surprised to see the author as Senior Editor. I am a strong supporter of Open Access movement but it is annoying to see these predator publishers who are corrupting open access (http://www.nature.com/news/predatory-publishers-are-corrupting-open-access- 1.11385). To increase the length of the bio-data and API scoring, there is a competition among the professionals. They increase the number of publications compromising the quality and ethics. I feel sorry for those professionals, who are dedicatedly doing quality research and publish very few articles. I know Prof. Konnur for more than 15 years now. The level of his contribution to the profession is so high that his academic honesty, integrity and dedication towards the profession is unquestionable. After all what is there to achieve for a senior professionals like him by publishing plagiarised papers?. In case of empirical study, research guide usually focus on analysis and interpretation of results. No guide for that matter would check history of the paper for knowing its authenticity. When results of the study are totally original and statements are reproduced by a research student just to express the original facts, Prof. Konnur need not plead guilty as he has done his duty as a supervisor with academic honesty. Rather than detection, prevention is what we need to work on if we are really intent to eliminate the problem. Prevention of plagiarism is possible only when the research students are made aware of what plagiarism is and its consequences. Because, majority of the instances of plagiarism being caused by research students are due to lack of clear understanding of what constitutes plagiarism. I sincerely hope that the recent discussions on this forum about plagiarism prevention will certainly help in establishing ways to eliminate plagiarism. There is no one-size-fits-all solution. I completely agree with the posting made by Shri Haravu regarding adoption of OSS or commercial software in an organization. I think the adoption of OSS in libraries requires passion, interest, and the ability to take bold initiatives by both librarians and decision makers. The lack of technical skills to manage or administer software by librarians is a primary reason why libraries have succumbed to the decisions of either management or commercial vendors. An important reason for low acceptance of OSS in Indian libraries is because of the inadequate marketing by OSS providers and partly because of their poor support. Koha has had excellent funding from consortiums abroad. On the other hand, NewGenLib built totally out of the passion of a few people has had no funding from Govt. or private sources. It is a pity that we librarians criticize poor support from vendors, but how many of us who are better equipped have taken the initiative to help other libraries? In other words, we do not believe in helping ourselves. It is a good move by major LIS industry service providers like Informatics to extend the OSS service support for Koha, Open Journal System (OJS), Open Conference System (OCS), etc. Such OSS service supports, strong service support by the OSS developers and the OSS community will definitely increase the adoption of OSS in libraries. Today we have Koha and NewGenLib which are rich in required standards in integrated library systems or library automation software. The features and capabilities of these two software(s) are better than several Indian grown LMS packages and much expensive software from abroad. I strongly recommend Koha for any type of library and for those who take Serials Control seriously, I suggest NewGenLib. I stand by my recommendation based on a research study. Recently, the study has been published as book Open source library automation software: features and capabilities<http://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/open-source-library-automation-software-mv-…>. The success stories of University of Mysore, Goa University, Delhi Public Library, Bangalore University, etc., and my own institute SDM Institute for Management Development, Mysore are some of the examples, to name a few. Having heard about the stories from librarians who are in the clutches of commercial software (both government and non-government) paying huge AMC, it is good to consider Koha and NewGenLib in your software selection list seriously. OSS will certainly reduce cost, give freedom to change to another software package, and build confidence to adopt new technologies. I would also like to disabuse the detractors of OSS for libraries on the question of support. True, in the past this may have been poor. My experience with NewGenLib since last two years has been excellent. All support is now received via remote desktop and an issue is resolved very efficiently.
