Digital Scholarship Has Released the Artificial Intelligence and Libraries Bibliography
by Digital Scholarship 08 Sep '23

08 Sep '23

The Artificial Intelligence and Libraries Bibliography includes over 125 selected English-language articles and books that are useful in understanding how libraries are exploring and adopting modern artificial intelligence (AI) technologies. It covers works from January 2018 through August 2023. It includes a Google Translate link. The bibliography is available as a website and a website PDF with live links. Libraries have been exploring AI technology for a long time. In particular, there was an active period of experimentation from the mid-1980s through the mid-1990s that primarily focused on the use of expert systems. Many projects used expert system shells, which simplified development; however, some projects also used AI languages, such as Prolog. This period produced a significant number of library-related AI papers. Subsequently, library interest in AI diminished until around 2018, when research activity increased. The public release of generative AI systems in late 2022, such as ChatGPT, sparked a strong upsurge of interest in them and a rush to utilize their capabilities. Since these systems are relatively easy to use, this development may result in a significant new wave of library-oriented AI activity. https://digital-scholarship.org/ai/ai-libraries.htm Best Regards, Charles Charles W. Preprints vs Plan S
by Subbiah Arunachalam 06 Sep '23

06 Sep '23

Friends, I just saw this brief article by Robert-Jan Smits. https://sciencebusiness.net/viewpoint/open-science/viewpoint-its-time-incre… The author is trying to defend and promote Plan S. In my view Plan S is a plan meant to perpetuate the hegemony (and obscene profit margins) of the publishing oligarchs at the cost of science and scientists. Scientists and taxpayers around the world, esp. the Global South, should steer clear of this evil plan and prefer achieving open access through the publicly peer-reviewed preprints route. Dear Friends, My school, the one I went to as a child in my hometown in Tamil Nadu more than 65 years ago, is looking for free-to-download (open access) books and magazines in all subjects + books of general interest suitable for children of classes 6-12. In English and Tamil mainly. Are there lists of such books you know of? If you were in charge of building such a collection, how would you go about it? I will be grateful for your help. With regards, Subbiah Arunachalam -- This message has been scanned for viruses and dangerous content by MailScanner, and is believed to be clean.

Reprint Request
by Padmanabha Vyasamoorthy 28 Aug '23

28 Aug '23

A few decades ago requesting a copy of a scholarly article could be made to the author(s). The author would normally spare a copy from his quota of reprints or from his own file copy. This was a primary source in my days (I retired from active librarianship around 2000). In fact ISI used to sell specialised Reprint Request Post cards - They used to contain auto-carbon peel off parts. The address could be peeled and pasted on To: page of the postcard. The reprint (bibliographical) info per se could be peeled off and pasted in your file for reference etc Has this practice disappeared? Do authors not get reprints for personal distribution? Has the practice been banned by publishers ? Am I asking a "Rip Van Winkle" Question? Thanks if anyone could respond!
