Reputation and revenue of journals linked to they being indexed by Web of Science
by Subbiah Arunachalam 20 Sep '23

20 Sep '23

Friends, Here is an interesting article on how the removal of a journal from the list of journals indexed by WoS can affect its revenue (and its reputation among scientists) dramatically. https://scholarlykitchen.sspnet.org/2023/09/18/guest-post-reputation-and-pu… Unfortunately, for most scientists around the world, open access means OA through paying APC. Despite arXiv serving the physics (and other) communities rather well for more than 30 years, scientists, especially in India are reluctant to adopt self-archiving in institutional repositories or global archives. LIS professionals can, I believe, play a proactive role in making research in science and scholarship open and at a much a lower cost than through paying APC. With best wishes, Arun

One day in the life of a digital librarian
by Subbiah Arunachalam 18 Sep '23

18 Sep '23

Friends, What does an award-winning librarian do at work? Here is a well-written account of a day in the life of an Indian digital librarian whom all of us in this Forum know. The feelings this 'one-day' story will evoke are very different from the feelings evoked by Alexandr Solzhenytsin's novel *One day in the life of Ivan Denisovich*, the story of a Soviet Union soldier who, on return from German captivity, was accused of being a spy. Karthik Ramaswamy's account of Dr Francis Jeyakanth, who soldiers on with his multiple responsibilities, would make all of us happy and proud. One of us, an Indian LIS professional has done so well, achieved so much, and done all that quietly, despite being in a junior position for most of his career. I am an accidental information professional. I was not trained in LIS or computer science. When I went to New Delhi to work in science publishing in my early twenties, honestly I didn't expect it would change my life. I am a small town guy and Delhi gave me a myriad of opportunities. My job was in science publishing; my office used to receive many overseas journals (which even large academic libraries might not have received then because of the foreign exchange crunch) on exchange for our journals. And INSDOC was housed in the same premises and they were building the National Science Library. I was in the midst of books, journals and trained librarians and trainees learning information science. The transition from a not-so promising chemist into information science newbie occurred without my knowing it. After a few months of living in a mess (where two or three people would share a 10' x10' room), I was welcomed into a bachelors' pad (a 2BHK flat + *barsati*) where already five young men were living along with their cook). Those were amazing guys, from different walks of life, very well informed, ever ready for a discussion or an outing. Probably I learnt more in their company than in many years of formal schooling. After all, it is not for nothing, they say, 'tell me who your friends are, I will tell you who you are.' It was in Delhi I met some of India's best LIS folks - Professors S Parthasarathy and T N Rajan (both of INSDOC), and some very good librarians -V Sarangan (CSIR) J S Raju, P Jeyarajan (both of the British Council Library). I also met a manager of a large publishing-cum-bookselling firm, P Sankaranarayaan (who was my classmate in my first year at college), and his firm's commissioning editor Mr Rajeshwar Rao Abburi. I also had some students in my class at INSDOC (where I taught one course for eight years), who were more knowledgeable than I was. Then on relocating to Bangalore, I came to know the work of Ratnakar, ARD Prasad and N V Sathyanarayana. I have been watching Dr Jeyakanth ever since I spent three months at NCSI as a visiting scholar in the mid-1990s. I must say I was impressed by his work and his work ethic. I would not hesitate adding him to the list of names I have mentioned. You may read the article in *Connect:* https://connect.iisc.ac.in/2023/09/the-digital-librarian/ Happy reading. And a hat tip to Karthik. Best wishes. Subbiah Arunachalam -- This message has been scanned for viruses and dangerous content by MailScanner, and is believed to be clean.

Call For Papers Fourth International Conference on Science & Technology Metrics (STMet 2023) November 16-17, 2023 BITS Pilani Dubai Campus. UAE (www.socio.org.uk/stm) Building metrics is the key to science and technology measurement and translating the measures to work better. The metric is not confined to drawing numbers and analyze. Selecting a metric depends on synthesising multiple directions and evidence-based data. Producing benchmarks and standards in science and technology evaluation and implementing them with real data mark the full-fledged system. Recently, new metrics-based models are emerging to reflect science and technology growth. The proposed Science and Technology Metrics (STMet 2023) conference concerns how many metrics may involve assessing different aspects of science and technology, which are best expressed using different approaches. Besides the standard conference track and the Doctoral Symposium, STMetrics will host several workshops and tutorials related to the conference's theme. The workshops provide participants with a friendly, interactive atmosphere for presenting novel ideas and discussing their application of metrics in Science and Technology Systems. The goal of the tutorials is to enable the participants to familiarise themselves with theoretical and practical aspects and the application of metrics. The proposed conference comprises invited talks, presentations, tutorials, workshops and discussions. The STMet has tracks on specialised topics. The STMet address the below themes, not limited. Citation-based metrics Ranking of Journals, Institutions, and Countries Discipline and Domain Analysis Economic factors Databases and datasets for evaluation Evaluation Tools and Indicators Web-based metrics Visibility and impact Scientific Knowledge Diffusion Internationalization and Co-working in Science Research Data Access Science, Innovation and Economic Performance Public Research Systems Future S & T Policies Text-based Metrics Innovation indicators Wearable Devices Open data National Evaluation Systems Open access and open publishing New indices for evaluation Altmetrics Web-based metrics Data Science and Digital Repositories Scientific Visualization e-Science in the Cloud Scientific Journalism Scientific Publications Evaluation beyond Metrics All submitted papers will be reviewed by a double-blind (at least three reviewers), and participative peer review. The review process will enable the selection process of those accepted for their presentation at the international conference. Authors of accepted papers who registered in the conference can access the evaluations and possible feedback provided by the reviewers who recommended the acceptance of their papers, so they can improve the final version of their papers accordingly.
