I would like to say all New generation and eminent LIS professionals that the Five Laws of Library Science is the only mantra of Success in this profession, many people thinking that they already got the top positions so they are success but it is not correct, if your users/staff are not happy with your services, you are not capable to know changing pattern of services, you could not able to prove as a public relation officer etc. then its not only bad for you but you are spreading bad reputation of the whole LIS profession. If for any reason you are not able to decide what to do?, how to do?, when to do?, where to do? etc. Then i give you a excellent Mantra to handle the situation and success which are as follows: 1. Books are for Use 2. Every Reader His/Her Book 3. Every Book its Reader 4. Save the Time of the Reader 5. Dear Colleagues, Congratulations to Dr. Anil Singh on a perfect, crisp Article at the time when our profession is sinking and loosing all its shine and charm.... with no recognition anywhere ........nothing is being done for the enhancement of the profession ..everybody is busy in creating his /her professional niche nothing serious is being done in creating serious efforts for the profession front or strengthening its basic structure that is professional Association or on the Govt. front. GILA is dead ILA is doing nothing and our cell in the Ministry of Culture to hear our problems has become defunct. A serious thinking is needed for pulling the right strings in right ways and ur Article is has painted a true picture that most of us are facing in the current prevailing time in our professional life. An article on the LIS subject has been published in the University News 51(30) July 29-Aug04,2013.The author ,Dr Anil Singh, may be given credit to highlight some of the pathetic situation being visible for quite a long time in this profession. Time has come when MHRD and UGC must take due initiative to ensure quality education, proper training, fair selection in LIS..Dr Singh has rightly pointed out pathetic situation in the universities as some deptts lack proper/regular faculties, basic infrastructure like computers and relevant s/w,research oriented education,etc.There are only few institutions in India which have still maintained the quality output. Dr Chattopadhyaya Committee had recommended to start an Indian Library Service on par with other All India Services.Howerver for one or other reason the GOI didnt take any initiatives in this direction. Dr Singh has rightly stated that nepotism & favouritims both have reserved their berths in this profession.His suggestion with regard to selection of Asstt Librarian/Asstt Professor by UPSC or like institute is worthwhile. I congratulate Dr Singh for his courage and fair treatment of the subject. Barnali on "Promoting Open Access amongst young researchers" at WSIS ( http://www.wsis-community.org/pg/forum/topic/834997/promoting-open-access-a… ) Here is the text of the post written by Ms. Barnali ( barna.chakrabarti(a)gmail.com) {Apologies for cross posting} I am currently assisting the Commonwealth Educational Media Centre for Asia (CEMCA) in developing Curriculum and Self-Directed Learning (SDL) Tool for Open Access for researchers and library and information professionals as a project of UNESCO. The UNESCO adopted Open Access strategy in 2011, and with effect from 1st July 2013 it has become fully Open Access. Capacity building to promote Open Access is one of the important strands of the UNESCO strategy. The UNESCO Open Access Forum 2011 also recommended training of young researchers and library professionals on Open Access. In the last week, I requested for help on articulating the training needs of library professionals, and this week I would like to request the stakeholders to think about what new researchers should know about Open Access. We believe that the OA awareness of the researchers that can make the Open Access movement more successful. In subject disciplines, where the researchers are more aware and have common goals, the amount of information available in OA is much higher than other disciplines. So, it is always better to follow the principle of "catch them young", and include a short training curriculum on OA for every researcher working for their doctoral degree. This can be a pre-doctoral work as well. If such a programme is to be organized, what are the knowledge, skills and attitude that should be covered in the training? In a survey conducted amongst researchers in a prestigious national university revealed that most of the respondents indicated limited participation in open access mode of communications either as users or as contributors. The study also revealed that their participation can be increased through appropriate training, and awareness creation. So, what you think as the areas that should be covered in OA training for researchers? Your response will help us to articulate more precisely the topics related to knowledge, skills and attitudes for Open Access.
