Arun Below is the press release announcing the 3rd Annual Award for individuals in the developing world who have made a significant contribution to Open Access. The application form for nominations follows the announcement. The EPT hopes to receive a similarly large number of representations as were received for the award in its first two years. THE 2013 EPT AWARD FOR INDIVIDUALS IN DEVELOPING COUNTRIES WORKING FOR OA Open Access Week arrives again this October, and is a time to celebrate all that has been achieved in the previous twelve months. The Electronic Publishing Trust is a long standing advocate of OA and the difference it can make. As our contribution to this years OA Week, we are offering our third annual international award to recognise the impact that individuals can make. The huge interest in and success of the first two awards makes it clear that such international recognition acknowledges the very real efforts being made by many individuals throughout the world, and accelerates the development of models for achieving the open and free transfer of essential information for the progress of research. ANNOUNCEMENT : The Electronic Publishing Trust* is pleased to announce that it is offering its third annual award for individuals in developing and transition countries** who have made significant advances to the cause of open access and the free exchange of research findings. Information on previous winners can be found on our website at http://epublishingtrust.net/ Nominations are sought for the award. Individuals may be nominated by themselves or others or by organisations, sending a statement using the attached form to the chair of the EPT Board, (d.law(a)strath.ac.uk) outlining the achievements of the individual. Please find the nominations form below. Nominations should be received by 30th November 2013. Selection of a winner will be made by a panel of EPT Board Members which will be chaired by Dr Patrick Corran, and will include Leslie Chan, Subbiah Arunachalam, Barbara Kirsop, co-founder of the charity, and Judy Ugonna. The result will be announced in January 2014 and it is intended that a presentation will be made at a location convenient to the winner. The award recipient will be publicly recognised through the presentation of a certificate and an engraved award. Earlier, he was with the Bell Laboratories, Murray Hill from 1983 to 1989. He also worked for 3 years at India's premier company, the Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd. He received the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Computer Science from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1983. He also holds a B.E. degree in Electronics and Communication Engineering from IIT-Roorkee, and atwo-year Post Graduate Diploma in Industrial Engineering from the National Institute of Industrial Engineering (NITIE), Bombay. IBM's commercial data mining product, Intelligent Miner, grew out of Dr. Agrawal��s work. His research has been incorporated into other IBM products, including DB2 Mining Extender, DB2 OLAP Server and WebSphere Commerce Server, and has influenced several othercommercial and academic products, prototypes and applications. His other technical contributions include Polyglot object-oriented type system, Alertactive database system, Ode (Object database and environment), Alpha (extension of relational databases with generalized transitive closure), Nest distributed system, transaction management, and database machines. Rakesh has been granted more than 60 patents. He has published more than 150 research papers, many of them considered seminal. He has written the 1st as well as 2nd highest cited of all papers in the fields of databases and data mining (13th and 15th most citedacross all computer science as of Februray 2007 in CiteSeer). Wikipedia lists one of his papers as one of the most influential database papers. His papers have been cited more than 6500 times, with more than 15 of them receiving more than 100 citations each. He is the most cited author in the field of database systems. His work has been featured in New York Times Year in Review, New York Times Science section, and several other publications. Indian Statistical Institute Documentation Research and Training Centre Seminar (1) 2012-14 Linked Data: Legacy Data discovery in Semantic Web Era Abstract The evolution of Semantic web from syntactic web has made data on the web machine processable and understandable. A more refined way to this technology is Linked Data, which transforms the web of documents into the web of connected data. Large amount of data is available in different file formats other than RDF, which are known as Legacy Data. RDF provides a framework to achieve Linked Data. So, in order to publish these data as Linked Data we need to extract and convert them to RDF without loss of information. This seminar, would try to explain the Linked Data technology stack and its working principles, highlighting some of its implementations like annotating text using DBpedia Spotlight and publishing legacy data as Linked Data using OpenRefine and Linked Media Framework. Finally it concludes with need for Linked Data in general with particular emphasis for Libraries.
