Using persistent identifiers (PIDs) for research outputs can maximize the discoverability and support in making research data FAIR. PIDs are unique and permanent identifiers that can be used to identify and cite research outputs over time. This is important for open research because it allows researchers to share their work with others and track its impact. A Digital Object Identifier (DOI), a type of PID, can be assigned and used for various research outputs (beyond the journal article) such as datasets, research software, dissertations, grants, peer review reports, etc. DOIs are persistent, unique, and machine-readable. Once DOIs are registered, it's easy to find and cite them. In this workshop, we are going to cover the following elements that could be useful for repository managers, researchers, librarians, and policymakers: · Introduction to persistent identifiers (PIDs) and their importance · Making your institution's research data FAIR · The value of integrating repositories with DOIs · DataCite's Global Access Program role in fostering PID adoption worldwide Overall, institutional repositories are a vital tool for supporting open research practices. In this interview, *Chao Tayiana Maina*, a Kenyan historian and digital humanities scholar, talks with me on her tryst with sustaining cultural heritage using digital technologies and making the African Digital Heritage a successful initiative. She is the Founder-Director of African Digital Heritage and has co-founded the Museum of British Colonialism and Open Restitution Africa as well. Chao shares her experiences and thoughts on initiating archival work for sustaining African heritage with the right blend of digital technologies. Call For Papers Fourth International Conference on Science & Technology Metrics (STMet 2023) November 13-14, 2023 BITS Pilani Dubai Campus. UAE (www.socio.org.uk/stm) Building metrics is the key to science and technology measurement and translating the measures to work better. The metric is not confined to drawing numbers and analyze. Selecting a metric depends on synthesising multiple directions and evidence-based data. Producing benchmarks and standards in science and technology evaluation and implementing them with real data mark the full-fledged system. Recently, new metrics-based models are emerging to reflect science and technology growth. The proposed Science and Technology Metrics (STMet 2023) conference concerns how many metrics may involve assessing different aspects of science and technology, which are best expressed using different approaches. Besides the standard conference track and the Doctoral Symposium, STMetrics will host several workshops and tutorials related to the conference's theme. The workshops provide participants with a friendly, interactive atmosphere for presenting novel ideas and discussing their application of metrics in Science and Technology Systems. The report, which was spotlighted at a seminar jointly organized by India’s Ministry of Education in partnership with Elsevier, analyses scientific production of the 19 G20 members, all of which have rigorous research and development programs. Elsevier examined 24,746,950 scientific publications from researchers at nearly 20,000 institutions. The data introduced some striking trends in global research. Global South Research Growth Of most note, for the first time India has taken over the United Kingdom as the third largest producer of research globally, behind China and the U.S. In fact, while the report shows all G20 countries saw enormous growth in their scientific capacity over the last 30 years, it revealed those belonging to the Global South saw the most growth. In the period 1999 to 2022, the number of scientific publications with authors in India grew 11.2% per year. For China the rate was 14.7%, for Saudi Arabia 16%, and for Indonesia 20.1% per year. Looking at the last decade, Indonesia’s research output grew 26% per year, Saudia Arabia was at 17%, and South Africa grew 7.8% annually compared to the world average growth rate of 3.6%. Data further reveals that China and India showed a growth rate of 9.3% and 9.7% respectively, substantially higher than that of the U.S at 0.5%. Call to libraries -- preservation of old science magazine/journals from India

All, I am part of the team at the Archives at NCBS (https://archives.ncbs.res.in/) a public collecting centre for the history of science in contemporary India. We have a mandate to try and preserve physical and digital material within our area of focus, and we are actively looking to work with libraries across India that may have old science journals/magazines and old science books. Please do consider reaching out to us if your library has old material that fits: (a) Science magazines (like Science Today, Science and Culture, Science Reporter, etc) up to 1995 (b) Science related books (not textbooks) published in India that are out of copyright - likely early 20th century. If there is interest, we can work with your library, bring the physical material to our preservation centre in Bangalore, digitize it, and send you back a digital copy. We also do physical conservation work. There is no cost to the library through any of these processes. We are funded through specific grants for this project to enable vast public access to the history of science in contemporary India (~1850 - 1995 is our domain for now). We can offer open-access (not open-use) to this material through our open source archival platform. We have on our website the current catalog for ~150,000 objects, ranging from manuscripts and correspondence to photographs to scientific equipment. In addition to the collections visible on the website, we hold other valuable material like the papers of TSG Sastry, a physicist who worked on the Thumba rocket programme, Leslie Coleman, an early 20th century agricultural scientist in Mysore state, and MS Swaminathan. We are fortunately funded to receive, process, preserve and digitize archival material for the next few years, and this should be a stable resource for generations ahead. We are also leading efforts in developing legal and ethical standards, and digital annotation tools for archival material. Dear All, FYI Refresh & Refocus: Libraries’ new trends in supporting entrepreneurs Date: Wed, Nov 1, 2023 Time: 2pm-5pm Eastern Venue: Zoom (online) The Entrepreneurs & Libraries Conference explores how libraries and library workers support entrepreneurship in their communities and campuses. Entrelib continues to be a gathering place for academic, public, and special library workers, as well as entrepreneurial ecosystem partners, via our free online events. The event will be free and hosted on Zoom The conference’s theme Refresh & Refocus relates to the ever-expanding work that libraries of all types are doing to serve entrepreneurs in their communities and contexts. It also acknowledges that library staff approach this work with a wide range of knowledge, and access to resources. This event seeks to provide a forum for expanding library understanding about the diversity that exists among these “entrepreneurials,” their needs, and both proven and emerging ways libraries can support and sustain entrepreneurs in their journeys. It also seeks to provide an opportunity for individual staff members and their libraries to assess where serving these populations fits in their institution’s priorities and how best to align their staff and resources to serve these engines of economic growth. In 2021 more than 5.4 million new business applications from entrepreneurs were filed, surpassing the record of 4.4 million set in 2020. A recent study of 1,500 adults making a work-life change found that 33% of respondents had explored starting their own business and that 27% had considered becoming a consultant or freelancing. Examples of topics of interest include: · How libraries position themselves in entrepreneurial ecosystems · Studies of information/resource needs and practices of entrepreneurs. · Services focused on serving specific populations: teens, senior adults, immigrants, blue collar/trades, individuals impacted by systemic racism, rural populations, economically disadvantaged. · Examples of effective community partnerships and how to establish and maintain them. · While acknowledging the value of community partnerships, we are interested in “home-grown” programs developed internally by libraries leveraging the library’s staff and resources. Proposals are not limited to the topics above, the conference is interested in receiving a wide range of proposals that embrace the conference theme. We are especially interested in proposals that provide new perspectives on not only how libraries support entrepreneurs (refresh) as well as programs to provide convincing arguments for why these services should be a priority (refocus). We will be accepting the following 2 formats of presentations:1. Presentation (15 minutes) This session will include 3 longform presentations, 15-minutes each. Academia exploring new approaches for evaluating researchers

Friends, Citations and impact factors are no longer the be all and end all of careers in research. Please read this article in Science (AAAS): https://www.science.org/content/article/how-academia-is-exploring-new-appro… . You may also wish to look up https://doi.org/10.20529/IJME.2018.024 . The same way, as I have been predicting for some time, journals will no longer be the primary means of knowledge exchange. They will go the way floppy disks and CD-Rom have gone.
