As we all know, UGC published the UGC REGULATIONS FOR APPOINTMENTS AND CAREER ADVANCEMENT SCHEME OF TEACHERS AND OTHER ACADEMIC STAFF IN UNIVERSITY / COLLEGES AND MEASURES FOR THE MAINTENANCE OF STANDARDS IN HIGHER EDUCATION 2010, which was later published in the Gazette of India, 18 September, 2010 and later was accepted by Government of Maharastra, DHTE vide its GR No. Sankirna - 2011/(25/11) vishi-1 dated 15th February, 2011. Also, recently accepted by Mumbai University vide its Circular No. CONCOL/TAU/40/ of 2012-13 dated 19th March 2013. If we refer 1. Appendix III Table - II(a) And 6.1.0 of UGC Regulation 2010 (page no. 104) 2. Appendix III Table - II(b) of UGC Regulations 2010 (page no 105) 3. Appendix III Table VIII(a) of the UGC Regulations 2010 (page no 122) 4. Appendix III Table VIII(b) of the UGC Regulations 2010 (page no 123) and compare the IV row regards Research and Academic Contribution (Category III) we found that, 1. The points of University Teacher and University Library Staff equals and found relevant to each other. 2. The points viz. 5/year and 20/AP; 10/year and 50/AP; 15/year and 45/AP for College Teachers are also relevant. 3. The points for College Librarian for stage I to II are 5/year and 40/AP is found irrelevant as 5 x 6 = 30 as maximum AP for first stage is 6 years. 4. Same is the case for Stage II to III and Stage III to IV. 5. This may be misprinted and the error remains unknown all these years. 6. The report was studied and forwarded by expert committees from UGC, MHRD, Government of Maharshtra and University of Mumbai and still no one has noticed the above error. 7. Suppose, if it is not an error, are they expecting the college librarians to do more research work than teacher categories. If anyone is having more information on this issue please let us know. After an eight-year, multi-branched legal battle <http://www.librarycopyrightalliance.org/bm~doc/google-books-litigation- family-tree.pdf> , Judge Denny Chin came down on the side of Google Books in a major decision on Thursday <http://motherboard.vice.com/blog/google-books-victory-widens-the-scope- of-fair-use> , ruling that Google was within its legal right to digitize the books under the fair use provision of US copyright law. Google started its digitization effort about a decade ago, but was criticized by authors and publishers for violating copyright, eventually spurring a class action lawsuit brought forward by the Authors Guild and the the Association of American Publishers. Chin ruled against the groups last week, in a move that's been hailed as a victory for fair use on the internet. Robert Darnton, a celebrated book historian and Harvard University's head librarian, has followed the legal saga over the years- always as a strong advocate for the public's access to literature in the digital realm. The student volunteers from MULISSA participated in the procession from City Central Library to Kalamandira under the leadership of Prof. Khaiser Nikam. The students created the awareness among the general public about the reading and libraries by holding more than 15 placards and two MULISSA banners. Dr. N.S. Harinarayana, Sri M.L. Umesh, Sri A. Selvaraju and Sri Sunil from the Department of Library and Information Science also participated in the procession. MULISSA also had organized a short skit at Kalamandira to highlight the significance of libraries in the society. Prof. Mallinath Kumbar, Prof. Chandrashekara M., Dr. A. Adithyakumari and research scholars from the Department of Library and Information Science participated in the function at Kalamandira. WORLD'S LARGEST CANCER DATABASE LAUNCHED

World's largest cancer database launched The world's largest cancer database - containing 1.7 billion experimental results - has been launched, with an aim to discover future treatments for the deadly disease. The system, called CanSAR, is the biggest disease database of its kind anywhere in the world and condenses more data than would be generated by one million years of use of the Hubble space telescope. It contains more than eight million experimentally derived measurements, nearly one million biologically active chemical compounds and data from over a thousand cancer cell lines. The database will utilise artificial intelligence similar to the technology used to predict the weather to predict which potential drugs are likely to work in which circumstances. The new CanSAR database developed by researchers at The Institute of Cancer Research, London, is more than double the size of a previous version and has been designed to cope with a huge expansion of data on cancer brought about by advances in DNA sequencing and other technologies. The resource is being made freely available by The Institute of Cancer Research (ICR) and Cancer Research UK, and will help researchers worldwide make use of vast quantities of data, including data from patients, clinical trials and genetic, biochemical and pharmacological research. Although the prototype of CanSAR was on a much smaller scale, it attracted 26,000 unique users in more than 70 countries around the world, and earlier this year was used to identify 46 potentially "druggable" cancer proteins that had previously been overlooked. The new database will drive further dramatic advances in drug discovery by allowing researchers access to, and the ability to interact with, unprecedented amounts of multidisciplinary data in seconds. CanSAR contains drug target information from the human genome and model organisms. Research that had previously taken months to complete will now take only minutes. "The database is capable of extraordinarily complex virtual experiments drawing on information from patients, genetics, chemistry and other laboratory research. It can spot opportunities for future cancer treatments that no human eye could be expected to see," Dr Bissan Al-Lazikani, Team Leader in Computational Biology and Chemogenomics at the ICR, said. "This is an extraordinary time for cancer research, as advances in scientific techniques open up new possibilities and generates unprecedented amounts of data. Our aim is to make this wealth of information, coming from both the clinic and from the laboratory, freely available in a very user-friendly form to as many people as possible," Professor Paul Workman, Deputy Chief Executive of the ICR, said. Pramati - MyLISA Workshop at Mysore

Dear Friends, I am happy to inform that Pramati Hillview Academy, Mysore in collaboration with Mysore Librarians and Information Scientists Association (MyLISA) organised a seminar on "Computerization of School Libraries" on November 18, 2013. The Workshop was a part of "National Week Celebrations" by the Pramati School. Twenty five school librarians from in and around Mysore attended the workshop. The workshop gave hands-on experience on e-granthalaya software of NIC. The technical director from NIC Smt. Manimozhi Udayanan was the resource person who gave the training to the participants on various modules like Acquisitions, Circulation, Cataloguing, and OPAC. The installation of the software was also taught. Earlier, the workshop was inaugurated by Smt. Manimozhi Udayanan. Speaking on the occasion she emphasized the need for initiating automation work at gross root levels like school. Sri Nagaraja S., President of MyLISA explained the activities of MyLISA. Sri S. Paniraj, Treasurer from Pramati School presided over the function. Dr. N.S. Harinarayana, MyLISA Secretary was present and talked about the workshop. Sri.
