Kudos to MyDLIS for getting UGC NON - NET Fellowship to 5 MPhil (LIS) candidates of the academic year 2013-14. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- It is an honour for the Department of Studies in Library and Information Science (MyDLIS), University of Mysore, Mysore to have got UGC NON - NET Fellowship for 5 MPhil (LIS) candidates of the academic year 2013-14. This award is for promoting research at Institutions of Excellence (IOE) and Universities with Potential for Excellence (UPE) at PhD and MPhil level. University of Mysore is one such Institutions recognized by MHRD and is granted Rs.10crs for a period of five academic years (2013-14; 2014-15; 2015-16; 2016-17 and 2017-18). First time in the history of fifty years MyDLIS gets this fellowship to its MPhil students. It has a few conditions that the students have to abide by to draw the fellowship. The candidates are eligible to draw Rs.5000/- per month for a two semesters (4 months each and totally 8 months) period starting from 20.09.13 to 18.01.14; 15.02.2014 to 14.06.2014. The library also includes 50 desktop computers and 100 Nook tablets preloaded with children’s books — just no physical books. (Patrons can read the library’s digital books on their own tablets as well.) Internet access and kids’ storytime are other, more familiar perks. Without the need for vast book storage space, the $2.3 million library can be way smaller than traditional libraries. As sage Umbra once wrote<http://grist.org/article/in-a-bind/> : It hurts to say it, but e-books are looking like a good option, even perhaps the better option. Ouch … There are caveats as usual, but I am forced to report the general conclusion that e-books produce less CO2 emissions and use less water than conventional newspapers and books. According to Ted Genoways’ oft-cited article “The Price of the Paperless Revolution <http://www.vqronline.org/articles/2010/fall/genoways-paperless/>,” it takes roughly the same amount of energy and materials to make an e-reader as it does 50 books. So for BiblioTech to break even, energy-wise, patrons would need to read 50 books on each tablet. With 10,000 library users registered in its first three months, this probably won’t be an issue. The green verdict will also depend on how often the library replaces its gadgets (obviously less often is greener, but planned obsolescence might not allow for that). And what about the mineral mining involved in making e-readers, and the e-waste once they’ve been discarded? Say what you will about books, but at least they’re semi-compostable. The conference will take place June 9-13 in Helsinki, Finland hosted by University of Helsinki‘s twin libraries: Helsinki University Library and the National Library of Finland. The theme this year is "Towards Repository Ecosystems" emphasizing the interconnected nature of repositories, institutions, technologies, data and the people who make it all work together. There are several different formats (see below) provided to encourage your participation in this year's conference. With the deadline for submissions fast approaching the organizers invite you to review the call for proposals here:http://or2014.helsinki.fi/?page_id=281, and to submit your proposal here:https://www.conftool.com/or2014/ by Feb. 3, 2014. KEY DATES • 3 February 2014: Deadline for submissions • 4 April 2014: Submitters notified of acceptance to general conference • 17 April 2014: Submitters notified of acceptance to interest groups • 9-13 June 2014: OR2014 conference SUBMISSION PROCESS Conference Papers and Panels We welcome proposals that are at least two pages and no more than four pages in length for presentations or panels that deal with digital repositories and repository services. Abstracts of accepted papers will be made available through the conference’s web site, and later they and associated materials will be made available in a repository intended for current and future OR content. In general, sessions are an hour and a half long with three papers per session; panels may take an entire session. Relevant papers unsuccessful in the main track will automatically be considered for inclusion, as appropriate, as an Interest Group presentation. Interest Group Presentations One to two-page proposals for presentations or panels that focus on use of one of the major repository platforms (DSpace, ePrints, Fedora and Invenio) are invited from developers, researchers, repository managers, administrators and practitioners describing novel experiences or developments in the construction and use of repositories involving issues specific to these technical platforms. 24x7 Presentation Proposals We welcome one- to two-page proposals for 7 minute presentations comprising no more than 24 slides. Similar to Pecha Kuchas or Lightning Talks, these 24x7 presentations will be grouped into blocks based on conference themes, with each block followed by a moderated discussion / question and answer session involving the audience and whole block of presenters. "Repository Rants" 24x7 Block One block of 24x7's at OR14 will revolve around "repository rants": brief exposés that challenge the conventional wisdom or practice, and highlight what the repository community is doing that is misguided, or perhaps just missing altogether. The top proposals will be incorporated into a track meant to provoke unconventional approaches to repository services. Posters, Demos and Developer "How-To's" We invite developers, researchers, repository managers, administrators and practitioners to submit one-page proposals for posters, demonstrations, technical how-tos and technology briefings. Posters provide an opportunity to present work that isn’t appropriate for a paper; you’ll have the chance to do a 60-second pitch for your poster or demo during a plenary session at the conference. Workshop Coordinators: Prof. Kedareshwaran Subramanian and Dr. Manjunatha K GSDL: Green Stone Digital Library software is a popular and internationally renowned Open source software system for developing digital libraries is promoted by New Zealand Digital library Project research team at University of Waikato. The software is designed, developed and distributed freely by UNESCO. The Training Objectives: 1. The primary objective of this 5-day workshop is to educate and train Library professionals working in AICTE approved Engineering Colleges and Management Institutes in Karnataka to develop digital libraries using GSDL. The workshop will highlight on: 2. Digital Library: Concepts and software; 3. Greenstone: Overview of features, capabilities, applications 4. Installation, configuration; accessing example 5. It provides a platform to improve conceptual skills and practical skills with more of lab-oriented practicing sessions. The week-long training modules include: 2.
