This next-generation system is organized into four separate modules, including acquisitions, cataloging and records maintenance, circulation, and systems integration, a module that will facilitate Kuali OLE's internal integration, as well as integration with other campus enterprise systems, such as financial, identity, and learning systems. Kuali OLE is a "community source" project, which differs from open source in that initially the software was controlled by a coalition of research libraries that agreed to contribute to the project in exchange for input regarding its development in the earliest stages. Those libraries include Indiana University, Bloomington; University of Maryland, College Park; Lehigh University, Bethlehem, PA; University of Chicago; University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia; University of Michigan, Ann Arbor; Duke University, Durham, NC; North Carolina State University, Raleigh; Bloomsbury Colleges at the University of London; Villanova University, PA; and a consortium of university libraries in Florida. Project funding has included contributions from several of these libraries, along with grants from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, the most recent of which was for $882,000 to Indiana University in March. Kuali OLE 1.0 was released in November 2013 under an open source Educational Community License. This release will allow early adopters to review installation requirements and begin mapping data from their current ILS. Version 1.5.0 was released in February and offers all of the necessary functionality for full implementation, although critical bug fixes are still being addressed. The University of Chicago and Lehigh will be the first to go live with the system in its 1.5 iteration and are aiming for summer 2014. Library Systems Report 2014- Marshall Breeding's article on Discovery Service and other Library Systems

Reports on Discovery Services http://www.americanlibrariesmagazine.org/article/library-systems-report-2014 The genre of web-scale discovery services has seen vigorous development and competition since about 2009. These products rely on a massive centralized index populated by the universe of content products to which libraries subscribe, open access materials, and local resources such as those managed through its ILS. Major products include ProQuest Summon, Primo and Primo Central from Ex Libris, EBSCO Discovery Service, and OCLC's WorldCat Local. EBSCO currently stands as the front-runner, with a long lead of 5,612 library subscribers to EDS. OCLC reports 1,717 libraries with access to WorldCat Local, though a smaller number use it as their primary discovery interface. Ex Libris has licensed Primo to 1,407 libraries, and ProQuest reports 673 libraries using Summon. Improvements to EDS implemented in 2013 include a major initiative to incorporate subject indexing of more than 10,000 open access journals. EBSCO provides EDS subscribers with details of its algorithms for determining relevancy of search results and gives libraries control over the priority of links presented to users. The company devotes substantial resources to EDS, reporting that more than 330 of the company's 420 developers are involved with the product's ongoing development. This figure greatly exceeds the development capacity of any other company covered in this report. ProQuest announced version 2.0 of Summon midyear 2013, offering a variety of enhancements to the user interface deployed on a new technology platform. The new interface adds a third column dedicated to additional tools and resources relevant to the search query, such as scholar profiles, topic explorer, best bets, and database recommendations. Ex Libris released Primo version 4.5 with new features such as virtual browsing by call number, improvements in date searching, and faster search performance. Additional capabilities in the OPAC via Primo address issues that arise as libraries retire their legacy online catalogs, such as when they implement products like Alma that depend entirely on a discovery interface. OCLC announced a new product, WorldCat Discovery Services, as the successor to both WorldCat Local and its FirstSearch service. Could not convince the authorities. ----> PVM Elderly initiative turns new page with Dubai library services Free membership and priority access to books for senior citizens as part of wider Thuker programme By Faisal Masudi, Staff Reporter May 9, 2014 Dubai: Senior citizens of Dubai have been granted complimentary public library membership as part of wider privileges for the elderly. Emiratis aged over 60 can receive free membership and priority services to all eight Dubai Public Library (DPL) branches. DPL started offering the privileges last month as part of the Thuker (Balance) initiative of the Community and Development Authority (CDA). CDA and its partners in the initiative aim to acknowledge and reward senior citizens for their contribution to Dubai’s development. DPL is also offering them a free pick-and-drop service for books and priority in borrowing books. Thuker is held under the patronage of Shaikh Mansour Bin Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum. A senior citizen said the initiative has encouraged him to read more on a daily basis. Mohammad Abdullah, 63, said the Thuker card “provides a variety of services and discount on products. I’ve received a great deal of support from the government entities which are providing a wide range of services at international standards. “One important value-added privilege I receive is the access to the services of [DPL] in which I now enjoy spending my free time in reading, as I know that daily reading strengthens my memory and stabilises my mood.” He added: “I hope that the list of the service providers registered with this CDA card gets broadened to have more authorities and companies from all over the country.” Established around five decades ago, DPL recently came under the ownership of the Dubai Culture and Arts Authority. Abdul Rahman Ebrahim, head of DPL, said: “Dubai Public Library is committed to giving back to the community through an array of year-round initiatives that engage and inspire love for the written word. “Through our participation in CDA’s Thuker initiative, we are honouring those individuals who have played a role in defining the city’s history.” He added: “Senior citizens account for a fair share of the [library users] ratio... The meeting ended in disarray at 1:30am on Saturday morning, after the EU tried to have crucial references to “text-based” work on copyright exceptions removed from the meeting conclusions - a move viewed by other Member States and library and archive NGOs present as an attempt to delay, if not derail, any progress on copyright exceptions at WIPO. Dr. Stuart Hamilton, Deputy Secretary General of the *International Federation of Library Associations & Institutions (IFLA)* commented: *“For the past three years, Member States have been looking at draft texts on copyright exceptions for libraries and archives. The EU is now trying to pretend these don’t exist. We’re frustrated, and deeply disappointed. It appears the EU came to WIPO with one goal in mind: to kill the discussion.” * The EU’s attempt to sideline discussion of copyright exceptions at WIPO is particularly concerning in light of the ongoing review of copyright laws at the EU level. Dear LIS Members, Through the forum I would take the opportunity to appreciate and congratulate Mr. V.K.Mishra and Mr. D.P.Tripathi on conducting a superb training in Koha & Joomla during the workshop at NIT, Rourkela. Their sincere commitment and dedication is an example to be followed by all library professionals. "Service before Self" is the motto that I could truly see in action during the 4 days of training. Their expert knowledge in Koha is an advantage to the community. I would highly recommend the training. I hope they would conduct again in future. Empowering librarians to be independent in driving a library is their life motto, which I could sense. I hope that the other participants also share the same view. He has received many awards/honors in recognition of his work, of which mention must be made of the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize of CSIR (1986), Alumni Award for Excellence in Research from IISc (1991), TWAS Award in Chemistry (1994), G.D. Birla Award for Scientific Research (1994), Distinguished Alumnus Award of IIT Kanpur (2000), Padma Shri (2002) and Padma Bhushan (2014) by the Government of India.
