While on the job, I realized, lot of good work (research) is being done at the laboratories in India but that does not reach to the attention of general public. English news papers in India, at least, give some publicity to interesting research results but the readers in regional languages have least chance to get exposed to such work. This is because there is no space available in print media nor there are as many writers who can contribute. As a professional librarian, I thought, I have acquired skills to comprehend the research work in simple language and that I can put that in my mother tongue (Marathi). My experiment in about a couple of years has yielded 26 articles. These are published in Marathi news papers, magazines and finally on my blog at http://muraritapaswi.blogspot.in/. (I realized that the readers for print and electronic media are different). There is an encouraging response (especially feedback after publishing in print media) that fuels in finding and writing on new topic! Based on my experience, I feel librarians can take this as a routine activity and can do this. Only difficulty is finding a place to get it published (it is quite frustrating because the media does not respond on acceptance or rejection of article - and once you give up, it appears!) - you get to know from feedback. Topic: Promotion of e-Resources for Academic & Research Excellence: Tips, Techniques and Insights Speaker: Dr. I.R.N. Goudar Venue: SRELS, # 702, Upstairs, 42nd Cross, III Block, Rajajinagar, Bangalore-10 Date & Time: Friday, October 10th, 2014 at 6 PM Abstract of the Talk: Apart from 50,000 e-journals, millions of e-Books and ETDs are accessible through both Open access and subscribed channels. This apart, Internet Archive alone gives access to more than 430 billion web pages. UGC spends about 180 crores annually towards e-Resources. Many publishers are moving towards online only environment. Managing and providing e-Resources-based services is a complex phenomenon. Library professionals are facing many challenges in promoting usage of e-resources. Some of the challenges that needs to be addressed to enhance the usage of e-resources include: A good library website serving as single point access to all e-resources (E-Resources Portal); Adaption of ERMs including federated search engines and discovery services; Good ICT infrastructure along with good Internet bandwidth; Both camp-wide and off-campus access to e-Resources; Effective department-wise awareness cum orientation programs; etc. Our experiments in this direction at the University of Mysore (UoM) resulted in accounting for 43.17% of usage of UGC Infonet E-Resources in 2013 among 11 universities in Karnataka. Useful tips, techniques and issues useful for promoting usage of e-Resources, especially my experience both at UoM and Bangalore University would be discussed. About Speaker: Dr. Goudar after completing his B.Sc. in Physics and M.Sc. in Human Physiology did his Bachelor's Degree in Library and Information Science from Karnataka University. He also obtained Associateship in Documentation and Information Science from DRTC/ISI in 1979 and his PhD in 'Library and Information Science' from Karnataka University in 2006. He started his career as a Scientific Assistant at CFTRI, Mysore during 1977. Then he moved to L&T, Bombay for a short period of one year as Supervisor-Documentation. He served Indian Institute of Chemical Technology, Hyderabad, one of the CSIR organizations for nearly 12 years as Scientist-Information. He was on deputation as Deputy Librarian at IIT, Chennai for a period of one year. In 1992, he joined National Aerospace Laboratory (NAL) Bangalore and retired as Head of Information Centre (ICAST) in 2009. Even after several years of his retirement, he is still very active in LIS profession and he has served as Visiting Professor cum Library Adviser in University of Mysore and currently serving as Visiting Professor cum Library Adviser in Bangalore University Library. Dr. Goudar has been bestowed with many honors and awards, notably among them are British Council Scholar during 1993 wherein he visited more than 60 institutions / libraries in England and Scotland and the prestigious Fulbright Fellowship during 1995-96 at universities of Columbia, NY (2 months) and Michigan at Ann Arbor (6 months). In fact, in a way, it is the idea of crowdsourcing citizen science projects have used to advance science. Look at projects like Polymath, Galaxy Zoo, Foldit, and several others. In India, we have the OSDD (Open Source Drug Discovery) project (initiated by Prof. Samir Brahmachari, former Director General of CSIR). I would like to see professional associations in India (ILA, IASLIC, SIS, SLA-India, etc.) pay attention to such activities. Masters level courses in LIS should sensitize students to such issues.
