Important Reminder Regarding LIS-Forum Communications
by Francis Jayakanth 07 May '24

07 May '24

Dear LIS-Forum Members, Greetings! This is a gentle reminder about the best practices concerning the LIS-Forum email communications. When sending messages to the forum, please follow these guidelines: - While disseminating messages, please ensure that the ‘To’ field is exclusively reserved for the LIS-Forum address, lis-forum(a)ncsi.iisc.ernet.in - Should you wish to include additional recipients, kindly place their email addresses in the ‘Bcc’ field. This measure safeguards the privacy of individual email IDs and prevents them from being visible to the entire membership. - Attachments: Please do not include any attachments (files or inline) in your LIS-Forum postings. Keeping messages text-based ensures consistency and accessibility for all members. - Email Sender Address: All LIS-Forum emails will be delivered from noreply(a)ncsinet.in. Therefore, when replying to messages: - Do Not Use the ‘Reply’ Button. Instead, choose the appropriate email address based on your intended recipient: - To reply to the LIS-Forum as a whole, use lis-forum(a)ncsi.iisc.ernet.in - To reply directly to the original sender, use their email address. I greatly appreciate your understanding and cooperation in these matters. Thank you once again for your valuable participation in the discussion list. Warm regards, Francis Francis Jayakanth, Moderator.

CUH Library Introduces a Value Added Course on "Open Access Publishing" for PG II Sem students
by Santosh C. H. 01 May '24

01 May '24

Dear Sir/ Madam, Season's greetings! We are happy to inform you that we recently introduced a Value Added Course on *"Open Access Publishing"* for the PG II Sem. students of Central University of Haryana. This initiative is one of our key initiatives in the domain of open access and is the result of our strong commitment towards promoting open access within our own community. Indeed, we find great possibilities to introduce different meaningful OA initiatives in the University landscape and achieve the possible impact of OA on the academic/ research community. We observe that many of the PG students are unfamiliar with OA publishing and its allied dimensions. Especially, researchers really need hand-holding as they need to be familiar with the publishing avenues in the OA domain. It reminds me of Peter Suber's words <https://openinterview.org/2019/06/29/peter-suber-the-largest-obstacles-to-o…>, "The largest obstacles to open access are unfamiliarity and misunderstanding of open access itself". In this context, it's our small effort to start with a small group of PG students! We are thankful to our authorities and academic fraternity for their support and encouragement for doing our best to promote open access in the Campus. For Course details, please visit https://library.cuh.ac.in/value-added-course/ We welcome your suggestions/ inputs to further improve the course curriculum. Thanks and regards, -- Santosh C. Let us follow some standards
by Subbiah Arunachalam 01 May '24

01 May '24

Here is a suggestion for members of this forum. Please encourage all researhers - professors and students in academia and scientists in other research performing institutions to have a unique ORCID ID. It would help researchers everywhere navigate the litearature of science and attribute your papers to you unambiguously. Also, place all your papers in the free open access repository Zenodo.org maintained by CERN. Neither of these would take much time. Please spread the word among all Indian researchers (in S&T, humanities, social sciences, etc.) You may also follow standard abbreviations for journal titles as well as ISSN.

Health information is a right – new IFLA statement
by Dr. J. K. Vijayakumar 23 Apr '24

23 Apr '24

Health information is a right – new IFLA statement 21 April 2024 Libraries of different types, through providing inclusive access to information can make a major contribution to making the right to health a reality. Governments, in turn, can and should help realise this potential through law, regulation and funding, as a new statement [https://repository.ifla.org/handle/123456789/3276] from IFLA underlines. The COVID-19 pandemic shone a light on the importance of healthcare information. From that used by individuals in deciding how to act, to that applied by professionals in caring for patients, and that helping governments to take key policy decisions, the need for effective access and use was clear. Where there was information, people, professionals and those in power could take better decisions. Where there wasn’t, there were higher risks, missed opportunities, and unnecessary tragedies. Crucially, this access to health information is not equitable, both between individuals and between countries. IFLA’s new Statement on Universal Access to Healthcare Information as a Human Right calls for a stronger recognition of the need to address this situation as a rights issue. This is based on provisions that already exist in international human rights law. The statement stresses that delivering on this right requires a combination of investment in creation of information, work to make it accessible for all, supportive laws and regulations, and close engagement with society. Libraries play a key role in this, as pre-existing and recognised centres in their communities, with a strong understanding of their needs and how best to deliver access to information to them. Nonetheless, their role in providing health information is not always recognised. The statement therefore calls on libraries to work – in their advocacy and practice – to ensure that everyone has access to health information. To allow them to do this, it stresses that governments should clearly recognise the right to health information and pass supportive laws. It also calls for work to support the development of an offer of healthcare information, supporting libraries and other institutions as dissemination and application, and to promote partnerships. The statement was prepared by IFLA’s Special Interest Group on Evidence for Global and Disaster Health [https://www.ifla.org/units/e4gdh/] working with the IFLA's Health and Bioscience Libraries Section [https://www.ifla.org/units/health-and-biosciences-libraries/] , and approved by the IFLA Governing Board on 17 April 2024. We encourage library associations, libraries and the library and information workforce – in particular in heath libraries – to draw on this statement in engaging with health ministries and agencies, representatives of the World Health Organization in your countries, and other stakeholders. Read and download the Statement from IFLA’s Repository https://repository.ifla.org/handle/123456789/3276. (as appeared on the IFLA news website)
