New version of liblivecd-1.5 (DSpace/Koha/Drupal)

Dear all, We are happy to inform about the new release of LibLiveDVD version 1.5. LibliveDVD is made available now for 32bit and 64bit machines. Both these versions can be downloaded from following link: https://sourceforge.net/projects/liblivecd/files/Version-1.5/ The current version of LibLiveDVD contains lubuntu 14.04.01 LTS, Dspace-4.2, Koha-3.18 & Drupal 7.34. All these three software are pre-configured and pre-installed. Along with DSpace, Koha & Drupal, DVD also contains following server related software preinstalled such as:- Apache2 Web Server, Openssh, ftp Server, MySQL Server, PostGreSQL Server, Courier/Exim4 Mail Server, SquirrelMail Web Mail Client, Teamviewer and Minimum desktop environment. Drupal Content Management Open Source Software is added considering the requirements from libraries to create their library websites with dynamic look plus managing variety of content types. Koha is installed through lubuntu packages which will allow users to upgrade Koha with just two commands such as "apt-get update" & "apt-get upgrade koha-common". After installing libliveDVD login to root and upgrade your koha before using it on production machine. The web installation part of Koha and Drupal is as well preconfigured in the DVD. Koha can directly be run by logging with user 'koha_library' with password 'library'. Drupal can be run by logging with user 'drupal' with password 'library'. There is no need to run any web installation part for Koha and Drupal now. To input multilingual data in DSpace/Koha, IBUS input method is also installed on the DVD. Teamviewer 10 is preinstalled to share desktop, Abiword for editing/reading word documents, gnumeric for using spreadsheets, vim/gedit for text editing and epdfview for reading PDF files, ssh for remote login. Libreoffice and multimedia related software are excluded from the DVD and these can easily be installed by running "System Tools-Synaptic Package Manager". If the synaptic “reload” does not work try changing repositories links to http://archives.ubuntu.com/ubuntu instead of http://in.archives.ubuntu.com/ubuntu and then search and install any other required software. lUbuntu operating system (Lightweight Operating System) is chosen considering requirements from libraries where libraries have low configuration desktops in their libraries but still wish to initiate their library web sites, initiate library automation, as well as wish to create digital libraries. With old desktops try to install 32bit version of DVD. For newer configurations of machines install 64bit version of the DVD. Please follow proper installation steps to install LibLiveDVD if you wish to have dual boot i.e. windows as well as linux installation on your machines. Sad Demise of Sri. D.N. Nagaraja Rao

Dear Sir/Madam, It was sad that Sri. D.N. Nagaraja Rao is no more. I did hear this sad news while attending the two day national conference on "Social Media and Libraries" held at the SBRR Mahajana College, Mysore. He was so passionate about library profession. He used to attend all the conferences and seminars held in and around Mysore. He was regular attendee of all the programs that MyLISA was part of. Often in the intervals at scholarly meetings he used to share his views and express his childlike inquisitiveness like "Super" if he come across good works. He used to ask young professionals about new technological developments and their applications in libraries. He was serving Ramakrishana Mission library after his retirement to just to serve the society and keep himself active in the profession. I was fortunate that I had some occasions to meet him and talk with him. Sad demise of Sri. D.N Nagararja Rao

I am quite saddened to report the demise od Sri. D.N. Nagaraja Rao, former Librarian of NIE Mysore. After his retirement at NIE, he offered his services to the institutions of The Ramakrishna Mission in Mysore. He took an active part in building their libraries and in teaching new students. He was a most humble person, always looking for inspiration from his peers and seniors. He was always present in library meetings with the enthusisam which marked him out as a true professional, always willing to learn and share what he knew. He was truly an unsung hero of the profession. He passed away on 5th Dec peacefully at Mysore after a brief period of hospitalization. I am sure all people who knew him will join me in offering our heartfelt condolences to his family. Sad Demise of Sri. D.N. Nagaraja Rao

It is very saddening to note that Sri D.N. Nagaraja Rao passed away on December 5, 2014 at the age of 81. Sri Nagaraja Rao was a very active librarian from Mysore. Even after his retirement in early 1990s, he was active in the professional circles and enthusiastically attending all the professional activities. He is a life member of MyLISA. He obtained his Bachelor’s degree in Library Science from Karnatak University, Dharwad and Masters from University of Mysore. He served the National Institute of Engineering, Mysore for nearly three decades and retired from the official service from the same institute. Later he rendered his services at Ramakrishna Vidyashala and created a database of books in CDS/ISIS during 1990s. He was very passionate for books. He had his own collection of books of more than ten thousands in his house. He even created a database of all those books in CDS/ISIS. He added the abstracts and table of contents of all the books in the database. His collection was characterized by the richness of subjects such as philosophy, personality development, religion, social sciences, English literature and library sciences. He was the habit of purchasing multiple copies of books of Ramakrishna Mission and was giving them as gifts to children and those who help him in some way. He was very proud of his own collection and as a true librarian he was enthusiastically introduce his library to those who visited his house. He was very much interested to guide children and motivate them for inculcating reading habits. At MyLISA he was the most attended member in all its activities. He was quite punctual and was keen to collect the presentations, papers and other informative literature. His interest in learning new technology, eagerness to get new ideas and hardworking nature made him a role model for many younger generation professionals. He did not lose his inquisitiveness till his death. He was interacting with many professionals in Mysore. He even pen down, recently, his own experiences under the title ‘Reminiscence of a retired librarian’. MyLISA would post that on its website after getting consent from his family members. The sad news of his journey to the permanent abode came during a Two-Day National Conference on Social Media in Libraries held jointly by SBRR Mahajana College and MyLISA. The delegates immediately pay homage to the departed soul by observing two minute silence. 25L BOOKS ON OFFER, GRAB ANY FOR FREE Hundreds of book lovers from across the City filed into the National College Grounds in Basavanagudi on Sunday as the three-day ‘Pustaka Parishe’ (book fair) began on a grand note. Nearly 25 lakh books on literature, culture, education, health and religion are on display. Visitors can pick any book of their choice free of cost. The organiser of the event, Srishti Ventures, a socio-cultural organisation, expects more than two lakh visitors during the seventh edition of the Parishe. Among the books are the works of Kannada literary giants Kuvempu and Shivaram Karanth next to acclaimed American writers Ernest Hemingway and Arthur Miller. The organisers told Deccan Herald they were getting around 60 calls from people every day, wishing to donate rare books With the rare and old titles, the organisers have developed a library of 30,000 books. There are 1,516 dictionaries of various languages and subjects, besides 60,000 titles useful to school and college students. Publishers and writers can sell their books on the second and third day. They expect about 150 writers and publishers. A symposium on ‘Survival of Kannada: Practical Measures’ will be conducted. Jnanpith awardee and veteran Kannada writer Prof Chandrashekhara Kambara, who inaugurated the Parishe, urged the public to actively take part in the signature campaign launched by the Kendra Sahitya Akademi seeking mother tongue as medium of instruction in schools. “The Akademi recently launched the campaign for which there has been a very good response in Gujarat, West Bengal, Maharashtra and other states. The campaign seeks to ensure mother tongue as the medium of instruction in schools. Everybody in Karnataka should take part in it to save Kannada and ensure it as the medium of instruction in schools,” he said. Kambara demanded that primary and secondary education be nationalised to solve the issue of medium of instruction in schools. According to him, most regional languages, including Kannada, are struggling to survive. The Supreme Court has held that parents have the right to choose the medium of instruction, which cannot be questioned. Hence, the only option left is to nationalise primary and secondary education, he opined.
