Editors at Philosophy & Public Affairs Resign and Will Launch New OA Journal
by Subbiah Arunachalam 23 May '24

23 May '24

Friends, "Crucial aims of scholarly publishing are not well served by commercial publishing," say the editors of a leading philosophy journal. Please see what I just received from <OPENCAFE-L(a)listserv.byu.edu>. Another mass resignation at a Wiley journal as the editors and all of the editorial board members of one of the most influential journals in moral and political philosophy, Philosophy & Public Affairs, have resigned en masse <https://dailynous.com/2024/05/22/editors-at-philosophy-will-launch-new-oa-j…>. This makes 11 journal mass resignations at Wiley since 2018 according to the Retraction Watch Mass Resignation List <https://retractionwatch.com/the-retraction-watch-mass-resignations-list/>. As the Daily Nous says according to their statement, *crucial aims of scholarly journals are “not well-served by commercial publishing* ... The outgoing editors and editorial board members will be launching a new diamond <https://www.coalition-s.org/diamond-open-access/> open-access journal to be published by Open Library of Humanities (OLH) <https://www.openlibhums.org/>, and will be occupying at the new journal the same positions they held at *Philosophy & Public Affairs*.” You can read the statement at the links above, it includes this familiar opening: "Faced with this conflict between purpose and business model, we have decided to embrace the purpose and move to an alternative model. The alternative—which our librarian colleagues have been urging for some time—is for libraries, universities, and other academic institutions to offer direct support for the publication of open-access journals, which are guided by independent scholarly judgment and freely available for authors and readers" **** It is indeed sad that at a time when enlightened editors of many journals starting from Fields medalist Timothy Gowers, who initiated the 'Boycott Elsevier' movement, are urging scientists to move away from commercial journals, we in India are entering into Transformative agreements with commercial publishers and helping them tighten their stranglehold on science and scholarship. A few months ago representatives of a commercial publisher was even given a red carpet welcome in New Delhi and their 'bus trip' to 15 leading institutions was facilitated so they could talk to professors and students on topics like writing research papers, presentation of data and scholarly communication! With best wishes, Subbiah Arunachalam

Co-located workshops during Science & Technology Metrics (STMet 2024)
by STM STMet 2024 20 May '24

20 May '24

Fifth International Conference on Science & Technology Metrics (STMet 2024) Tien Giang University. My Tho, Ho Chi Min. Vietnam October 17-19, 2024 Co-located Workshops https://socio.org.uk/stm/workshop/ 1. First Workshop on Text-Based Metrics and Indicators About this workshop Many scientists have disapproved of traditional research assessment systems such as publications, citations, and impact factors. Traditional metrics are obtrusive and based on human judgements, resulting in inconsistent and non-correlative results. In the rapidly evolving landscape of research assessment systems, the emergence and development of non-bibliographic indicators have marked a significant stride toward more reliable evaluation models. This workshop aims to explore innovative research in the rapidly evolving field of text-based indicators, focusing on its integration and application within the broader scope of assessment systems. We warmly welcome submissions from all, regardless of their level of expertise, that demonstrate novel approaches, theoretical insights, and practical applications of text metrics and their role in advancing the field of research assessment systems. You can submit the papers online on the submission page with a note on text-based metrics. ————– 2. First Workshop on “Future Developments in Altmetrics” About this workshop We are excited to announce an upcoming workshop on “Future Developments in Altmetrics” that aims to break new ground in Altmetrics. The workshop will encourage discussion from academic and working experts, which promises to be an enriching experience for professionals and researchers alike. Research Assessment systems are on the rise. New advances in Assessment indicators have enabled the creation of ever more competent evaluation systems that have the potential to contribute to various types of measures. However, this potential to result in a step-change in the deployment of Altmetrics with an acceptable level of reliability is warranted. Many studies comparing Altmetrics findings with other research assessment measures reported conflicting results. Researchers and institutions must unite to transform the unique insights and innovations developed in Altmetrics from lab prototypes into robust and reliable real-life solutions for institutions. In this workshop, we create a platform structured around three specific themes: (1) the Reliability of Altmetrics indicators, (2) Scope and application perspectives, and (3) Limitations and improvements. We encourage researchers to address any issue related to Altmetrics and present their findings. Workshop Chairs 1. Amir Reza Asnafi Shahid Beheshti University. Velenjak Tehran. Librarians must interact with researchers much more than they
by Subbiah Arunachalam 17 May '24

17 May '24

Fellow Academic and research Librarians, All of us know our work is not confined to what we do with inanimate objects - books, reports, online content, managing our budgets to get the maximum benefit to our clients/users, and so on. The most important part of any, especially an academic/research, library is not these physical things and not even efficient management of the scarce resources allotted to the library. It is people as Washington State University's business librarian Gabriella Reznowski would tell you. See how in partnership with Assistant professor Amrita Lahiri, Ms Reznowski helped Lahiri's entrepreneurial management class complete their term project in which they pick a research question focused on entrepreneurship and conduct a survey of the literature relevant to their question. They interview entrepreneurs and use databases such as Pitchbook and Statista to find answers.Dr Lahiri considers the university's libraries to be a critical ally in pursuing this objective. Please see https://news.wsu.edu/news/2024/05/16/carson-colleges-amrita-lahiri-named-re… . The question for us in India is how often do we see such active collaboration between faculty and librarians even in the best of our higher educational institutions? Saying that in the Internet era researchers have direct access to the info they need through their laptops is not good enough. How many of us know the current questions our professors and students are investigating? How often do we meet them and discuss their information needs? I have had the privilege of knowing a few librarians who excelled in serving their academic clients beyond their expectations. I will only name two of them: Mr V Sarangan, who came from Salem in Tamil Nadu with a Third class BA and a basic diploma/degree in library science to join as a technical assistant in the CSIR headquarter's library in New Delhi. His lowly status notwithstanding he did a marvellous jof. He knew which officer, be it the Director General or Head of Planning or Manpower division, would benefit by reading which latest arrivals from among the books, reports, journal articles, etc. Then there was Ratnakar, now retired, of the Raman Research Institute, who knew the research interests of virtually every researcher in the campus from the Director down to the freshly recruited research student. I have benefited much from both of them although I was not working in the same institution. I would like to hear such positive examples from the current crop of librarians. With best wishes, Subbiah Arunachalam http://orcid.org/0000-0002-4398-4658

Suggestions for improving the scholarly communication ecosystem in India
by Subbiah Arunachalam 17 May '24

17 May '24

Friends, I have some suggestions for Indian scientists and those involved in supporting research. 1. All publishing authors (from India) may be persuaded to register with ORCID (Open Researcher and Contributor ID) and obtain a unique author identity. Mine is below the signature line. [To obtain a unique ORCID identity, one may follow these steps: 1. *Register for an ORCID ID*: - Visit the ORCID website[1] and click on "Register now." - Fill in your name, email address, and create a password. - If you already have an ORCID ID, select the appropriate option; otherwise, continue with the registration process[4]. 2. *Verify Your Information*: - Review the list of researchers with similar names and select the correct profile or continue with registration if you don't have an ORCID ID yet[4]. 3. *Set Up Your Profile*: - Create a password and adjust the visibility settings for your profile to ensure it is visible to everyone, as ORCID is designed to help researchers share their information with others[4]. 4. *Agree to Terms and Register*: - Check the terms of use boxes, complete the registration process, and confirm that you are not a robot[4]. 5. *Utilize Your ORCID ID*: - Once registered, your ORCID ID will serve as a unique and persistent identifier throughout your career, even if your name changes or you move to a different organization[4]. 6. *Link Your Publications and Works*: - Add your publications, funding information, and other works to your ORCID profile to showcase your research output and achievements[4]. By following these steps, you can easily obtain a unique ORCID identity that distinguishes you as a researcher and helps in accurately attributing your scholarly work[4][5]. Citations: [1] https://orcid.org [2] https://libguides.uprm.edu/orcid-en [3] https://info.orcid.org/documentation/api-tutorials/api-tutorial-get-and-aut… [4] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rFpgseSN7kE [5] https://www.crimejusticejournal.com/orcid/index} **** 2. All institutions which are shown as affiliations in the byline of a research article/report/preprint/any other kind of published stuff should be persuaded to register and obtain unique organizational RoR (Research Organization Registry). [To obtain a unique institutional identity using the Research Organization Registry (ROR), please follow these steps: 1. *Check if your institution already has a ROR ID* - Search for your institution on the ROR website[3] to see if it already has a unique ROR ID assigned. - If your institution is listed, you can use the provided ROR ID. 2. *Request a new ROR ID if needed* - If your institution is not listed, you can request a new ROR ID by submitting a form on the ROR website[3]. - Provide details about your institution, such as its official name, website, and address. **** 3. *Validate and update your institution's ROR profile* - Once your institution has a ROR ID, review the associated profile information for accuracy. - If any details need to be updated, such as name variants or address information, you can request changes by contacting the ROR team[3]. **** 4. *Open Researcher and Contributor ID* - Encourage researchers affiliated with your institution to include the ROR ID in their publications and grant applications. - Provide guidance to researchers on how to properly format and include the ROR ID. **** 5. *Monitor and maintain your institution's ROR profile* - Regularly review your institution's ROR profile to ensure that it remains accurate and up-to-date. - If any changes occur, such as mergers, name changes, or new campuses, update the ROR profile accordingly[3]. By obtaining a unique ROR ID and maintaining an accurate institutional profile, your institution can ensure consistent and reliable identification in research information systems and databases[3]. Citations: [1] https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC8391995/ [2] https://www.techtarget.com/iotagenda/definition/unique-identifier-UID [3] https://clarivate.com/blog/getting-the-full-picture-institutional-unificati… [4] https://education.icar.gov.in/Latest_Universal_Student_ID_for_ICAR_for_webs… [5] https://www.thehindu.com/education/registration-of-students-for-unique-iden… for accuracy. **** 3. We should insist that all authors deposit their published work both in *Zenodo.org* and *BASE* in the interest of long term preservation and ease of access to anyone, anywhere, anytime. I have already done that. Both are managed by reputed organizations and are free to use. Librarians in academic and other research-performing institutions may be given training to assist in this. 4. Authors may be persuaded to adopt preprint as the first choice of communication of all new results. There are many of them (and one can obtain a list from COAR), the well-known ones being arXiv, bioRxiv, chemRxiv, SocArXiv, etc. 5. Authors may be persuaded NOT to publish in commercial journals. If they still want to do that they should not pay APC. Certainly NO FUNDING AGENCY SHOULD UNDERWRITE APC. Transferring taxpayers; money to publishers is immoral and unethical. With best wishes, Arun http://orcid.org/0000-0002-4398-4658On

Papers matter and not journals or publishers
by Subbiah Arunachalam 16 May '24

16 May '24

Friends, Often scientists and librarians go by big names. But not all papers in big name journals are top class and not all journals published by big name publishers are decent journals. Please see what is happening at Wiley: https://www.insidehighered.com/news/quick-takes/2024/05/15/wiley-shutter-19… https://retractionwatch.com/2023/03/21/nearly-20-hindawi-journals-delisted-… What really matters is what is in an individual paper and NOT in which journal it was published or by which publisher. Best wishes. Arun http://orcid.org/0000-0002-4398-4658
