Sad demise of Mr. V.L.Kalyan

Dear Professional friends, It is a shocking news to hear that Mr.V.L.Kalyan is no more. One of the very active professional and a very humble professional passed away on 9th Jan 2015 after a brief illness. Mr. Kalyan was very affectionate friend to not only to me and my family but as well to all professionals in the state and admired by his students in IGNOU for which he has been an academic counsellor for more than a decade. He served in various organisations like in ITC, Bharat Electronics for a very long time and after retirement he was library advisor at Indian Statistical Institute for two years. Very active in all professional conferences and seminars and has also served as a resource person for CEP. He was also Gen Secretary of KALA and actively associated with Dept. of Public Libraries. The profession is poorer by his demise and we pray almighty to his soul rest in peace and convey our heartfelt condolenses to his bereaved family. It is a bad period for the profession as we lost four veterans in the span of nearly a month. ======================================================================= ISI-CODATA International Training Workshop on Big Data 9th to 20th March 2015 Indian Statistical Institute (ISI),Bangalore, India & International Council for Science: Committee on Data for Science and Technology (CODATA), Paris, France Venue: Indian Statistical Institute, Bangalore Centre. ========================================================================== CODATA and the Indian Statistical Institute (ISI) - along with other partners - will convene an International Training Workshop on Big Data. This will continue the emerging series of International Training Workshops which CODATA is seeking to establish with a variety of partners. Recent training workshops have been held in Beijing, China and in Nairobi, Kenya. The International Training Workshop will take place at the Indian Statistical Institute in Bangalore, India on 9-20 March 2015. Objective: The intensive, two week residential course has as its objective to train early and mid-career data professionals in using latest technology and techniques in Big Data management and its exploitation. Eligible Participants The workshop is targeted at early and mid-career data professionals. The definition is deliberately flexible to allow candidates from a variety of backgrounds to make a case. However, doctoral students, post-doctoral researchers, young faculty members and early career data experts, data managers etc are the target group. Ideal candidates will have some experience as data managers, data encoders, metadata managers, archivists, data exploitation personnel, analysts, data publishers or similar roles. Data experts that help policy makers in data related policies are also included. Scholarships Students from SAARC countries and from other countries in South and Southeast Asia will be welcome. A limited number of scholarships supporting accommodation and travel may be available. IndusTree: CXO Power Talk (14) "Training for Leadership -- the Air Force Way" by Air Marshal Ramesh Rai, VM Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief HQ Training Command, Indian Air Force Date: Friday, January 9, 2015 Time: 11:30 to 12:30 pm Venue: Athena Auditorium, MYRA Talk Summary Air Marshal Ramesh Rai, V M was commissioned as a fighter pilot on December 9, 1976. He flew GNat and Jaguar aircraft in the initial years and subsequently commanded a Jaguar Squadron. He is an Experimental Test Pilot and Cat ‘A’ Flying Instructor with approximately 4,500 hours of flying to his credit. He is the recipient of the Suranjan Das Trophy and Chief of Air Staff (CAS) Trophy for standing first in test pilots courses and for being best in flying. He has held important command and staff appointments at Air Head Quarters as Joint Director, Air War Strategy Cell, Director, Air Staff Requirements and as our Defence Attache at the Embassy of India in Tel Aviv, Israel. Later, he commanded Advance HQ at Kolkata and Air Force Station, Bidar. The high mark of his tenure at Air Force Station Bidar was the induction of the HAWK Aircraft in the Indian Air Force, wherein he pioneered the Training System on this Advanced Jet Trainer. He served as Senior Air and Administration Staff Officer of Maintenance Command at Nagpur, and was the Chief Instructor (Air) at Defence Services Staff College, Wellington, prior to elevation to the Rank of Air Marshal on June 1, 2012. He served as Senior Air Staff Officer of Central Air Command before taking over as Air Officer Commanding in-Chief, Training Command. He was commended by Air Office Commander–in-Chief, Eastern Air Command and Chief of Air Staff for his flying skills and devotion to duty. He was awarded with Vayu Sena Medal by the President of India on January 26, 1999 for his Distinguished services to the nation. How technology is helping the visually-impaired access libraries at Delhi University Source: Dnaindia on 2015-01-02 07:13:18 Recently, Delhi University installed a special technology to help visually-impaired students. Please tell us something about it One of the biggest challenges faced by the visually-impaired, both students and teachers alike, is print access. They find it very difficult to access libraries. This recent technology, which is part of the “Inclusive Print Access Project’, can be used to scan library books and convert the text to speech. Thus visually-impaired students can access any book in the library without human help. How does this technology work? A camera scanner which is mounted on a stand is attached to a computer equipped with headphones. All the student has to do is place the book (only English language) under the scanner and keep turning the pages while the computer translates the text into speech. There are also options like dictionary, bookmarking etc. available to help students. A 200 page book takes approximately half an hour to be scanned, after which the students can share the audio file with others. Tell us something about your work in the past Our organisation filed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) against the Punjab National Bank in 1999 against the denial of promotions to all visually-impaired employees from stenographers to officers. As a result, a number of such employees can now become officers in banks across the country. We also filed PILs against Indian Railways, Reserve Bank of India and other corporations for non-observance of the reservation scheme mandated under the Persons With Disabilities Act. How would you describe the current scenario for disabled persons? We have definitely moved ahead as compared to where we were. When I was studying, there was no facility to access study material; I was also turned down by a principal for a teaching job because of my disability. Now the situation is much better as different academic and professional organisations give special focus to inclusion. However, a lot of work still needs to be done because when you talk of equality and inclusion, even 99% is not enough. It has to be 100%. So where are we lagging behind? As with most other issues in our country, we have laws, legislations, policies etc. in place but the implementation is lacking. Also the attitude of looking at disability as a negative factor in a person needs to change in order to promote inclusiveness and independence.
