Workshop Report: Personality Development Workshop at Visva-Bharati Central University

Dear Library professionals, A Three-day Intensive Workshop on *Personality Development and Communication Skill* was organised in Central Library, Visva-Bharati Central University during 23 - 25 July 2015, jointly with IASLIC, Kolkata for the benefit of the staff of the Visva-Bharati Library Network. The workshop was attended by 29 participants. A repeat programme will be held in September for the remainder employees of the Network. The workshop, conducted in 11 technical sessions over three days, aimed at developing Personality, Self Management Practices, Oral Communication, Written Communication, Presentation Skill and Listening Skill. The main thread of the workshop was development of the information professionals in an other - than technical dimension like team work, leadership, motivation, goal setting etc. The workshop was inaugurated by Prof. Swapan Kumar Datta, Pro-Vice Chancellor, Visva-Bharati (after lighting of the lamp) wherein he spoke of offering prompt and courteous service to the users. Dr. V. K. Thomas, University Librarian welcomed the gathering. Prof. S. B. Banerjee, Vice-President, IASLIC, Prof. K. P. Majumder, Convener, Education Division, IASLIC and Dr J. N. Satpathi, former President, IASLIC spoke on the importance of and various components of the workshop. Dr. D. Gunasekaran, Registrar, Visva-Bharati distributed the certificates. Center for Lifelong Learning, Value Education & Longevity Skills Development (CELIVE).* *The drafting committee feels importance of lifelong learning but in that draft they did not mention the librarians role in lifelong learning.* We must resist their thinking and proved them that librarians teaching Information literacy which is soul of lifelong learning must have adequate share in Board of lifelong learning,value education and life skill development & Centre for Lifelong Learning, Value Education & Longevity Skills Development. GOOGLE BIDS ADIEU TO ITS SOCIAL NETWORK Google is bidding adieu to Google Plus, an awkwardly named social network that the American search engine had launched four years ago hoping it would become a serious rival to Facebook. Google has spent the last several months chopping up Google Plus's most useful pieces and making them separate services as it moves away from making Google Plus the central hub for all Google-related activity. On Monday, the company announced its most drastic step for breaking up Google Plus. Google has announced more sweeping changes for Google Plus over the next few months as it restructures network into two distinctly separate products: streams and photos. Many tasks Previously, many tasks within Google products (such as, say, commenting on a YouTube video) required a Google Plus profile, but that won't be the case moving forward. "People have told us that accessing all of their Google stuff with one account makes life a whole lot easier," Bradley Horowitz, Google's vice president of photos and sharing, wrote in a company blog. Google now says that in the coming months, you'll only need to create a Google account to do things such as creating a YouTube channel, communicating with contacts and other key functionalities. Google also announced it's adding a new feature to the social network called Google Plus Collections, which lets users share and read posts sorted by existing topics like sneakers, gluten-free recipes and Ireland or all-new user-generated topics. Meanwhile, the social network's location sharing ability will be moved over to Hangouts and other unspecified apps, "where it really belongs." The changes also mark a symbolic end of Google Plus as a social network meant to rival Facebook. Forcing Google users to sign up for a Google Plus account in order to the use some of the company's other products and services was a clear bid to generate interest in its social network, but it backfired with many users. Google Plus claimed 300 million monthly active users in late 2013. Dear Librarians, I have some queries to share with you. As an eligibility for MRP Grants from UGC is : "Only the teaching faculty of Library Science, Physical Education, Principals and Vice-Chancellors will also be eligible to participate in the scheme." This criteria is limiting Librarians doing Projects. 1. May I know the reason behind excluding us? 2. Are librarians not an academic part? 3. Are librarians not eligible to conduct research? 4. Teaching and Research are two different things. Rather research is another dedication, another motivating factor. 5. We Librarians wish to do many experiments in our libraries, therefore UGC support will go a long way. 6. Teachers have very little scope to concentrate on research, if they are teaching the prescribed syllabus sincerely, while librarians have limitless scope to investigate problems, experiment new things and for that your positive decision will prove to be motivating factor. 7. (inevitably comparing)Teachers teach what is prescribed and may be more than what is prescribed and keep learning new things. Late Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam and Library and Information Services

Dear Professionals, Sad demise of our dear Ex-President of India Bharatratna Dr. Abdul Kalam has shocked the entire world in general and our country in particular. While typing this message, I am listening to a number of people from different walks of life showing their respects to this great son of India through their condolence messgaes in TV. I would like to quote few interesting instances about Dr. Kalam, seen and experienced when I was working as Head of the Information Centre at NAL, Bangalore. Dr. Kalam was Chairman of Research Council of NAL, when he was Head of DRDO. I would like to quote his sense of humour I witnessed during one of the meeting. NAL had collaborartion with TAAL (Taneja Aerospace and Aviation Ltd). At that time 'Taal' Hindi picture runnung successfully. When discussion came about TAAL, Dr Kalam started singing the song 'Taal se taal mila .....' . The UGC-Infonet Digital Library Consortium was formally launched in December, 2003 by Dr. A P J *Abdul Kalam*, then President of India. In his book 'Ignited Minds', Dr. Kalam recognises knowledge as prime mover of prosparity and power. He supported Digital Library of India (Million Book Project) in a big way. I had an opportunity of making a presentation about NAL Information Centre in the presence of Dr. Kalam. While appreciating our Centre's innovative information services he had advised us set up National Aerospace Library & Information Network. We could never full fill his desire as most of the Aeropsace LICs in India are part of either ISRO or DRDO, wherein confidentiality is of prime concern. I had few opportunities of serving his aerospace information requirements, for which he himself had spoken to me personally. Inspite of being a big man he had the courtecy of writing appreciation letter that too in his own handwriting. I consider myself lucky for having got opportunities for delivering lectures twicein his presence at Metcalfe House, that too once due to his suggestion. He took lot of interest to improve LIS at DRDO. Once I happened to stay in DRDO Guest House, where Dr. Kalam stayed after he was designated as President of India, but not yet assumed President's Office. I tried, but failed to meet him as he had left for TN on the same morning. Then onwards I had glimpse of his looks only in some functions or through media. SOME PUBLICATIONS OF DR. The objective of this online event is to provide a forum to discuss how information centers and libraries can promote the adoption of access to information as part of the post-2015 agenda through the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) [4]. The Lyon Declaration [5], an advocacy document being used to influence the content of the UN post-2015 development agenda, will play a key role in this discussion. The event will offer webcasts by experts to provide important background information for participants and to help stimulate dialogue around three main questions: 1.- What are the ways that access to information (and more narrowly open access) contributes to sustainable development? Please elaborate in case studies and examples if possible. 2.- How can libraries and information centres promote the adoption of access to information as part of the "post-2015 agenda, in particular SDGs"?
