Ranganathan’s Five-Laws re-invented by OCLC for the world of e-Libraries and e- Learning!

Dear Sir/Madam, The report “Reordering Ranganathan: Shifting user behaviours, shifting priorities” brought out by OCLC is very interesting to read. The authors of the report have done extensive research to show us why Ranganthan’s classic work “Five Laws of Library Science” is very much relevant for libraries to thrive and success in meeting user’s needs in today’s technological driven information society. This report is also an eye opener for Indian LIS research community to look for inspiration and ventured into philosophical underpinnings of LIS domain. We must acknowledge OCLC for revisiting Ranganthan for showing the way for libraries to success in the 21st century. We Indian should have been at the forefront in revisiting Ranganathan’s works to inspire LIS community. But Indian LIS research community for no good reason has not been seen or taken up research seriously on Ranganathan’s works. It is worth mentioning that, it was Pauline Atherton Cochrane an American who revisited Ranganthan’s Five laws in 1970’s (see Putting Knowledge to Work: An American View of Ranganthan’s Five Laws of Library Science). Kathryn La Barre of University of Illinois has done a Ph.D., on Ranganthan’s Faceted Analysis and its application in organizing website or classifying web documents (see The Use of Faceted Analytico-Synthetic Theory in the Practice of Website Construction and Design). Now it is OCLC which is brought out a very significant report on Ranganthan’s Five Laws. It is a proud movement for Indian LIS community that S.R. Ranganathan even today is a revered figure in world LIS community. We must also ponder that why we Indian LIS community is not seen Ranganathan’s contribution very seriously as much as western LIS community is considering him for reviving or inspiring library community to chart out future course of action? Authors not bothered about quality of Open Access Publications

Nature has published the results of a survey on open access publishing. "A survey of 22,000 academic researchers by Nature Publishing Group (NPG) and Palgrave Macmillan has found that a decreasing number of authors are concerned about perceptions of the quality of open access publications. In 2014, 40% of scientists who had not published open access in the last three years said 'I am concerned about perceptions of the quality of OA publications .' But this year, only 27% said they were concerned. In the humanities, business and social sciences (HSS), the drop was more marked; from 54% in 2014 to 41% in 2015. MyLISA Elocution Competition - Report & Results

Dear Professional Friends, Librarians' Day Greetings! ‘Books are for use declares the first law of library science of S.R. Ranganathan. Inculcating and encouraging reading habit is one of the implications of the law. Mysore Librarians and Information Scientists Association (MyLISA) tried to put forwards its small foot in this direction by conducting an elocution competition for high school children of Mysuru. The intent behind this competition was to promote reading habit among school children. This competition was held on 9th August 2015 (the birthday of Dr. SRR) at the Department of Library and Information Science, University of Mysore, Mysuru. The topic for the competition was *‘My favourite book’.* The competition was attended by 58 students from 22 schools. The parents and teachers accompanied the students and witnessed the competition. The range of books read and the presentation of the summary of the books by the children amazed the audience and the judges alike. It is pleasant to note that the autobiography 'Wings of Fire' by Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam was the most talk about book in the competition. Even Kannada speakers talked about it. MyLISA takes this opportunity to salutes the great soul who taught us to dream. Ranganathan’s Five-Laws re-invented by OCLC for the world of e-Libraries and e- Learning!

*Happy Librarian's Day!* The intellectual spirit of S R Ranganathan is alive and rocking in the new world order of information, education and learning. Thanks to OCLC, which came out with an independent report last year (2014) titled – “Reordering Ranganathan: Shifting user behavior, shifting priorities”. This report is a well-researched effort to bring in a new perspective to Ranganathan’s Five Laws in a digital landscape. The report expands the scope of the five laws to the e-Content domain of all types in all media including e-learning systems. The expanded scope covers users beyond the purview of traditional LIS. One can see this in the illustrated examples in the report like “Every Google map its traveller”. How universal and relevant are Ranganathan’s Laws is convincingly brought out in this report by the two OCLC researchers (Lynn Silipigni Connaway, Ph.D. and Ixchel M. Faniel, Ph.D. This 130 page report is also excellently summarized by Dr. K. S. Raghavan in a 30 page article published in the recent issue of the SRELS Journal of Information Management [Vol 52(1), Feb. 2015, p. 3–23].
