When researchers pay to publish: Results from a survey on APCs in four countries
by Subbiah Arunachalam 20 Oct '24

20 Oct '24

Friends, This paper may be of interest to many of you. It would be nice if some PhD student could carry out a similar survey on paying to publish among Indian researchers (in both STEM and HSS). This study surveyed authors in Argentina, Brazil, Mexico and South Africa. https://arxiv.org/abs/2410.12144 Unfortunately none of us knows for sure how much India is spending annually on APC paid to overseas publishers and how much of it is from the taxpayers, although some people attempted to GUESS it. With warm regards, Arun

InfoFire episode on Whither Open Access| Conversation with Dr. Jean-Claude Guedon
by Shalini Urs 27 Sep '24

27 Sep '24

Dear Friends and Colleagues, There have been many discussions in this forum on the topic of Open Access (OA), particularly led by Arunachalam. As someone who has been an active participant in the OA movement and having pioneered the Vidyanidhi Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations (ETDs) back in 2000 — which helped catalyze later ETD and digital library efforts in India — it was an absolute delight and privilege to have an in-depth conversation with my dear friend, Jean-Claude Guédon, the maverick champion of OA, in the latest episode of InfoFire titled "Whither Open Access." Our chat was nostalgic as we reminisced about our time on the NDLTD Steering Committee from 2002 to 2012, while delving into the evolving landscape of academic publishing. We discussed the challenges posed by the commercialization of OA and explored whether the diamond model could offer a sustainable path forward, especially as more institutions rethink how research is disseminated. I wanted to share the article and the videocast with you folks. Please tune in to this episode for a deeper understanding of where we've come from and where we're headed in the future of academic publishing. Here is the link to tune in: https://informationmatters.org/2024/09/whither-open-access-a-fireside-chat-… Hope you enjoy the conversation and gain valuable insights from Dr. Guédon's perspective. Thanks and regards, Shalini
