Good Morning Friends!!! With due respect, I render homage to the unforgettable legend Padmashri Dr. S. R. Ranganathan who paved the way for Library Professionals by his enormous contribution to Library Profession. I wish you all a very happy ‘National Librarian’s Day’ and on this occasion I take this opportunity to introduce *‘An online manual of open source tools’* which can be accessed at www.dptripathi.in/manual This e-manual has been prepared based on personal experience, self-practice and browsing different resources which includes the following. *Koha* - Open Source Integrated Library Management System (ILMS) *DSpace* - Open Source Digital Repository Software *Joomla* - Open Source Content Management System for web designing *Data Migration* - How to migrate from one system to another system By reading the content available on this, anyone will be able to understand the basic procedure about how to work in any good library. Dr. Ranganathan's actual date of birth is 9th August; In the official records his date of birth is shown as 12th August. At the Sarada Ranganathan Endowment for Library Science the practice was to observe the birthday on any day between 9th and 12th August. However, 12th August has been officially declared as Librarians' day. Prof. Neelameghan had once told me that Dr. Ranganathan did not approve of any function / celebrations even on his birthday. But mortals that we are, we need something to ring the bell and wake us up from slumber and I believe that the celebrations are purely for that purpose. Let us remember that library / information service is a support service so that some one who is our customer is able to carry out his task in a more effective and efficient manner. Let us not forget what Dr. Ranganathan preached and practiced. It certainly should not be that we celebrate his birthday and forget his ideals the next day ! Dear Professionals, Our OPAC (http://library.git.edu) is presence on the web since 2011. The patrons (total 4500+ students and 500+ staff) are finding difficult to login Web-OPAC every time using their credentials for checking the account details and forgetting the credentials several times. The email or sms notification for overdue, renewal and transactions not reaching to patron due to frequently changing their mobile no and email Ids. These concerns leads a major motivation behind development and deployment of mobile app for library. The lot of minutes technical things has been considered from planning to execution of Mobile app project. Mobile apps can be login once using credentials and also can login without credentials using barcode of Ids. The beautiful features and best part of this app is push notification. This feature is not required any email or mobie no of patrons .The push notifications are intimating to patron about return, renewal, overdue,new arrivals etc.. and these notification will not stored mobile. The difference is as similar to other apps comparatively accessing on mobile web. The interoperability features of KOHA leads us to think in direction. Thank you one and all for your compliments..... Do you know actual librarians day?

Dear All, Sometimes it is very irritating/confusing situation when we do not know the exact date of birth of any great person. We librarians used to celebrate Librarians day on 9th or 12th of August each year in honor of Dr. Ranganathan birth date but it is a very embarrassing situation in my view. We library professional must decide together one particular day for librarians day celebration because it divides library professionals into two groups in one of the most important days for the library profession. Some say’s Ranganathan official DOB is 9th and some say on 12th August and vice versa. Imagine a situation if top leaders/intellectuals from another domain of knowledge ask this question to some top library professionals in a meeting conducted to upgrade the librarian states or to give huge funds to celebrate librarians day and if two dates will be disclosed by LIS professionals then it will be really a situation when people sitting in the meeting have to say all Librarians to first decide a particular day for your librarian day then come to upgrade your status etc? Dear friends these are the small things which can be easily improved and bring library professionals on one single platform but ignorance of such small but most important thing is the major cause of declining library profession and professionals status in my view. Conflict Management

Conflict Management: Any library professional working anywhere in any library, always has to play the dual role – first one is to understand the behavior of their library patrons and the second one is to understand their superiors and subordinates. In this regard, many professionals have given their opinion and one of them is Mann and Katz who says, there are three skills of managerial and they are: 1. Technical Skills 2. Human Relation Skills, and 3. Conceptual Skills And, out of these three, most importnat is 'Human Relation Skill' which is responsible to establish effective relationship with chiefs, superiors, sub-ordinates and library patrons. A library professional, especially Librarian, has to to be sensitive to the attitutdes, feelings and requirement of staff members otherwise, he/she will not be able to estimate the reaction of library staff of saying and doing. The important human relations are not only those related to achieving the objectives of organizations but those related to maintaining the organization's internal system. There are many factors that kill the interpersonal relationships and CONFLICT is a very influential and one of them. After your best practices and efforts sometimes conflict occurs between individuals and groups as well. Lack of understanding between interacting individuals is the root of interpersonal conflict. However, libraries are considered totaly the institution of library patrons and here in any situation, conflict can not be avoided. It is our (Librarian) responsibility to identify the main areas of conflicts. This may vary from one library to another library depending upon the nature of the library, goal and objectives of the library and type of the library users who are being served. Some of the genral areas where conflict may occur easily and they are: 1. Authorities demanding more and more services to satisfy users' need with limited resources 2. When any change is introduced, (either in infrastructure or library services) it affects the timing of the sub-ordinates and also the acceptance by the working staff (in most cases – introduction of computer) 3. Most important – when we (Librarian) avoid or fail to recognize the special efforts taken by any staff to improve the library system and services 4. When library users demanding more services but resources are very limited or limited allocation 5. When we (Librarian) don't try to identify or recognize the conflicting condition, it develops hostile relationship among staff and authority. Sometime, deliberate conflicting condition is developed by some of the sub-ordinate, that has to be identified seriously. The best method to resolve these conflict is to identify the conflict first and work on it seriously before hostile relationship takes place. Some of the very known procedure may help to adopt and go ahead with any one of them. 1. Suggestion Box: This is the best method to know and solve the conflict. Many times, staff or anyone does not find courage to bring the real condition before the authorities and conflict goes unnoticed. It will also help to submit the problem without getting noticed. 2. Observation: The authority has to be sharp enough to observe the behaviour or change in communication style, nature and behaviour of any staff towards his/her head and also in working environment. Conflict Management is the technique which can help the authority to develop congenial environment and also restrain the staff from fighting and argument. The authority with the conflict management technique can resolve the conflict in constructive manner and easily establish healthy relation between individuals. Some of the mentioned ways may help to resolve the conflict: 1. Approaching personally 2. Participative Decision Making 3. Better understanding and cooperation 4. Building trust and faith for each other 5. Motivation and Encouragement 6. Sacrifice for the benefit of individuals 7. Changes in the system and structure of need sometimes may reduce the conflict. The above lines are based on readings different resources and personal experience. There may be more options to resolve conflict through different methods. Dear All, MarcEdit, a free tool developed by Terry Reese in 1999, is used for different purposes and highly used by computer experts and especially, it is very useful in Data Migration and Conversion. It can be installed on cross platforms such as Windows, Linux etc. Marc Edit is software used mainly for cleansing the data for migration purpose. The software makes the work easy as it enables the technical experts to add/delete the information in data exported from the source structure. It also helps in making the data as per the target structure. Dear Sir /Madam, Greetings from Central Library, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi MHRD, under its NMEICT mission, has entrusted IIT Kharagpur to host, coordinate and set-up National Digital Library (NDL) towards building a national asset. The objective of the project is to integrate all the existing digitized and digital contents across educational institutions of the nation to provide a single-window access with e-learning facility to different groups of users ranging from primary level to higher education level of our county. NDL will harvest metadata and contents from all the Institutional Digital Repositories (IDR) of Universities and Institutions, all other digital library initiatives, and NMEICT projects and index in the National Digital Library Server so that all the e-contents can be searched and accessed in the full-text by the users through a single window. In view of the above, Central Library of Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, in collaboration with NDL Project, IIT Kharagpur,is organizing a 2-day Workshop on Institutional Digital Repository for National Digital Library (NDL) Project on 01-02 September, 2016 at, JNU, New Delhi. The workshop will contextualize the roles of various Institutions in NDL and their participation through the maintenance of IDR. It will also include an advanced-level Hands-on Training for the development of IDRs in each institution so that e-contents of individual institution can be harvested and indexed by the NDL server. 7th pay report and role of library policy makers/leaders?

Dear All, Nice for taking many initiative regarding improvement of pay and i observe previously also many have taken in this regard but the result is not much fruitful as reflected by the report of 7th CPC ( http://7cpc.india.gov.in/pdf/sevencpcreport.pdf (Page number 232) ) neither any up-gradation of staff of group B/C/D has been recommended by 7th CPC as reflected in the latest gazette notification ( http://www.igecorner.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/7th-pay-commission-gaze… , page 18) Many professional discussion i have seen on social media too and observed mostly the discussion was related to the group "A" staff . I personally feel and found there is variety of post nomenclature among library staffs on the same pay scale and it creates problem too for decision makers at the time of deciding the pay scales. Library association and policy makers must think from the low level of staff structure and uniformity in their designations too. Further, You may suggest your views to UGC as per notification at ( http://www.ugc.ac.in/pdfnews/2415887_UGC_Notice_PRC_English-(1).pdf) and feedback can be given to many people who is considered to be leader of LIS, But what about the other professionals who does not comes under the UGC, therefore i suggest to send such recommendations to all autonomous bodies/institutes too like council of IIT/NIT, IIM, CSIR, DRDO, ISRO etc. Thanking You.
