Annual expenditure on STEM and HSS journal subscription, and annual expenditure on APC paid to journals for the period 2014-2023
by Subbiah Arunachalam 09 Nov '24

09 Nov '24

Friends, A large part of research in India is funded mostly by one or the other of the Govt funding agencies. The total amount invested on R&D hovers around 0.65-0.7% of GDP, very small compared to some other countries which invest upwards of 4% of GDP. On top of it, not all that meagre some is used for research - on research fellows, laboratory supplies and equipment, setting up facilities (like astronomical observatories or neutrino observation centres), hosting and taking part in conferences/workshops, etc. A part of the money goes to subscribing to journals, a large number of them by a few greedy publishers who report profit margins of around 3% year after year and on APC towards publishing papers in certain journals supposed to be 'prestigious.' Would some member of this forum, preferably someone interested in the cost of doing science, invest some time to examine how much has been the outflow of money from India towards APC annually say since 2015. Also the amount spent on subscribing to overseas journals, both STEM and HSS, annually? With best wishes, Arun http://orcid.org/0000-0002-4398-4658 http://www.researcherid.com/rid/B-9925-2009

Many books and recordings will come into the public domain soon
by Subbiah Arunachalam 03 Nov '24

03 Nov '24

Friends, Come the New Year's Day in less than two months, we will be able to access for free a very large number of books and recordings (whose copyright expires this year). Please see https://everybodyslibraries.com/2024/11/01/the-remainder-of-the-roaring-20s… . Do we have an annual list of books published in India (and recordings) that go out of copyright and thus become freely accessible to the public? I don't know. With warm regards, Arun

A webinar of interest to STEM librarians
by Subbiah Arunachalam 31 Oct '24

31 Oct '24

Friends, This webinar on S2O to be held on 6 November may be of interest to most STEM librarians. Please see : https://bit.ly/registration-nov24 and https://www.oaspa.org/events/wayfinders-4-a-deep-dive-into-s2o-subscribe-to… . The S2O model for serials pioneered by Annual Reviews Inc. about five years ago and the D2O model pioneered by the MIT Press follow the Gandhian ideal of Trusteeship. Those who can afford to pay pay enough so those who cannot pay also enjoy the benefits. Only a few subscribers to cover the costs, but the whole world can read. That is one model of open access. India being the third largest producer of STEM publications and having aspirations of becoming a scientific superpower, it is only fair we support such initiatives as well as other existing earlier initiatives providing Green open access such as *arXiv*. [I understand that a few Indian institutions, e.g. Matscience , Chennai, do support *arXiv*, but not as many as would be commensurate with the size of our physics community and their research output.] -- Arun http://orcid.org/0000-0002-4398-4658 http://www.researcherid.com/rid/B-9925-2009
