Adieu: Prof. Shalini Urs

Dear Sir/Madam, Prof. Shalini R. Urs is attaining superannuation on 31st December 2016 after four decades of academic journey. Prof. Shalini started her career as an academic at the Department of Studies in Library and Information Science, University of Mysore, Mysore in 1976. Precisely forty years back. Thereafter, it was a remarkable journey in the field of library and information science. She has contributed immensely for the growth and development of LIS in general and more particularly for digital library movement in India. Prof. Shalini is always at the forefront in designing and developing MyDLIS (the term coined by Prof. Shalini for LIS Department of Mysore University to create unique identity) curriculum. The MyDLIS curriculum was far ahead of its time compared to other LIS schools in Indian Universities. The syllabus was always kept abreast with the current developments in LIS. It was MyDLIS which first introduced digital library, digital library practicum, and personal development and communication skills papers in LIS schools in India. Many LIS schools have used MyDLIS Curriculum as a model to develop their LIS Curriculum. Such was its uniqueness. Prof. Shalini’s global outlook has helped MyDLIS greatly in having model curriculum. Prof. Shalini’s was one of the very few academicians who sensed the emergence of technology in a big way and its impact on LIS domain much before the Internet era. Prof. Shalini was instrumental in bringing 4th International Conference of Asia-Pacific Digital Libraries (ICADL) one of the biggest ever digital library conferences to India and organizing it for the first time in Bangalore. Again in 2013 after a decade ICADL was held in Bangalore under Prof. Shalini’s leadership. Prof. Shalini’s brainchild Vidyanidhi Digital Library and E-Scholarship Portal was the first Indian digital library initiative which was created to facilitate the archiving and accessing of Indian doctoral theses. Vidyanidhi was envisioned as a national repository for depositing e-theses as early as 2004. However, INFLIBNET, an Autonomous Inter-University Centre (IUC) of University Grants Commission (UGC) started Sodhaganga on the lines of Vidyanidhi and emerged as a national digital library and e-scholarship portal. It was Prof. Shalini who envisioned the idea of developing national digital repository for archiving and accessing doctoral theses in India. Vidyanidhi showed way for UGC to come up with Sodhaganga. The name Sodhaganga (Reservoir of Intellectual Output) resembles Vidyanidhi (Treasure of Knowledge). Prof. Shalini wrote a very lengthy scholarly article for Annual Review of Information Science and Technology on “Digital Libraries” in 2002 with Edward A. Fox of Virginia Tech University, who was a pioneer in digital library research. This is an indication for her penchant for technology and its impact on libraries. In fact, in one of the scholarly meetings, Sri Puttanaiah, Retired Librarian of SJCE (JSS Science and Technology University), Mysore, and an alumnus of MyDLIS, while sharing his thoughts on the lecture, mentioned that Prof. Shalini was talking of importance of computer for information processing way back in the 70s and 80s. If one were to write the history of Indian digital library, without acknowledging Prof. Shalini’s contribution for the Indian digital library movement it would not complete. Alice Gillett, 77, came across a copy of ‘The Microscope and its Revelations’ written by Dr William B Carpenter, while clearing through her late husband’s possessions from Taunton, Somerset in England, a media letter said on Thursday. While turning the pages of the 1,000-page book, she discovered a date stamp showing it was borrowed from the library of Hereford Cathedral School in 1886, Metro.co.uk reported. It had been loaned to her grandfather Professor Arthur Boycott who attended the school between 1886 and 1894. He was a distinguished naturalist and pathologist, the report said. Gillett returned the book to the school along with an apology letter. “I am sorry to inform you that one of your former pupils, Professor A E Boycott appears to have stolen the enclosed – I can’t imagine how the school has managed without it!,” she wrote in the letter. The school does not charge for overdue books but if they had, Gillett could have been landed with a bill of 7,446 pounds (USD 9,463) – based on a 17p-a-day charge at most libraries, the report said. Gillett said, “As a child, he (Boycott) took great interest in natural history, and his particular passion was snails. At age 15, he published his first paper listing the snail species that could be found in Herefordshire”. He also had a fascination with fauna and flora made him quite a hazardous driver because he was so obsessed with observing the hedgerows, she said. “My grandmother said he always had snails in his pockets,” she said. Recently, the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) has been ranked 2nd Best University of India as per new ranking released by the U.S. News & World Report on their list of overall best global universities rankings. *About the Department* The foundation of the Department of Library Science was laid way back in 1950-51 with the introduction of a ‘Certificate Course in Library Science’, by the then University Librarian, (Late) Padmashree Prof. S. Bashiruddin, who later on introduced a one year ‘Bachelor of Library Science’ course in 1958-59 with full time Lecturers for the first time in the country. Subsequently, ‘Master of Library Science’ was introduced in 1970-71 and Ph.D in 1990-91. The Department had taken a pioneering step by introducing Library Science as a subsidiary subject for the students of B.A. since 1986-87. The nomenclature of the Department as well as of the titles of the various courses offered along with their contents had been revising to incorporate changing dimensions of the subject. A special feature of the revised syllabi is the emphasis on Information Technology and hands-on training on a number of commercial and open source library automation software packages. A well-equipped computer lab consisting of about 25 systems, a server and LCD projectors etc., supports the revised syllabi with round the clock Internet facility. The seminar library of the department was automated as the first fully automated library of the university in 2004. The faculty with full capacity of nine members have not only widely travelled in India and abroad, but have also substantially contributed in national and international peer reviewed journals and conference proceedings. Kindly post this in the forum. *India’s scientific publication in predatory journals: need for regulating quality of Indian science and education* *Abstract: *Nature Index analysis 2014 rates India at the 13th place for its high-quality scientific publications. Despite this achievement, several studies have revealed that India is also among the major contributors of articles. published in poor - quality predatory open access journals. Therefore, the objective of the present study was to .estimate which category of educational and research institutes predominately publishes in predatory open access journals in India and to understand whether academicians in India are aware of predatory journals. It was found that private/government colleges contribute to about 51% of predatory publications, followed by private universities, state universities, national institutes, central universities and industries, for research articles published from September 2015 to mid- February 2016. The publication pressure among researchers and lack of monitoring the research being conducted are the major factors contributing to articles published in poor-quality predatory open access journals from India.
