The objective of the conference is to revisit faceted analytical theory as a method for (re)constructing modern classifications and indexing languages and the role analytico-synthetic classifications have had in resource discovery and retrieval, from their introduction at the beginning of the 20th century to date. The conference will examine the challenges analytico-synthetic classifications represent for data modelling and interface design in the Web environment. Most importantly, it will explore potential fields of application for faceted classifications in information organization, visualization and presentation of large datasets, social networks and in the open linked data environment. High quality and innovative contributions are invited for the following topics: - The impact of faceted analytical theory and research on modern classification and indexing languages; - Data modelling, data management and data sharing of faceted and analytico-synthetic classifications; - Vocabulary mapping, semantic linking and natural language interfacing of analytico-synthetic systems; - Applications of faceted analytical theory on (re)constructing knowledge classifications and indexing languages; - End user interface design and user-friendly knowledge presentation for faceted systems; - Novel applications of faceted systems outside the bibliographic domain. CONTRIBUTIONS: Two kinds of contributions are invited: conference papers and posters. Authors should submit a paper proposal in the form of an extended abstract (1000-1200 words, including references, for papers; and 500-600 words for posters). It is an archive that preserves 300 years of print culture. RMRL is organizing a four day workshop on paper conservation, which includes theory and hands on practical sessions on topics such as: Disinfecting library material Understanding parts of book Disbinding & cleaning Deacidification Strengthening Sewing & Binding Making book jackets & cases for different needs *The workshop will focus more on practical training.* With support received from Navajbai Ratan Tata Trust, RMRL recently undertook a conservation program, conserving rare print materials in the Library. Each selected author will develop a self-paced online course covering approximately 5-7 subtopics and providing approximately 15 hours of instruction and materials. Selected proposal authors will: Attend an in-person retreat with the project team and fellow authors to review program goals, discuss formats and learning styles, and refine the learning objectives and methods we will use for each course and its subtopics (April-May, 2017). Assemble the following learning materials for each course subtopic: learning objectives, readings, a narrative core for the course, a brief annotated bibliography, case studies, and exercises (May-August, 2017). Refine the materials according to guidance from an Instructional Designer (August-September, 2017). Create a course guide to support those who may use the materials (October 2017). Assist in the creation of evaluation instruments tied to the learning objectives and competencies covered in your course (November-December, 2017). Be invited to participate as a panelist at the 2018 Library Publishing Forum to talk about the project and the course materials (March-April, 2018). The curriculum is expected to reach more than 100 students in the first year of pilot experiences (2018) through LIS programs, professional development workshops, and online courses. We are pleased to be able to offer an honorarium of $4,000 for each of the four course topics (Policy, Content, Impact, and Sustainability). This honorarium will be provided to each of the four authors (or author teams) as they complete their work on the four course topics in December 2017, in recognition of the time and energy course development requires. DRTC/ISI and ICSU/CODATA International Workshop on Open Data Repositories http://drtc.isibang.ac.in/odr March 1-3 , 2017 Venue: Indian Statistical Institute, Bangalore, 8th Mile, Mysore Road, Bangalore- 560059 Over the last 15-20 years, digital repositories have been widely deployed to host and offer services over collections of scholarly publications. Attention is now necessarily turning to the management and stewardship of data created by and for research is deemed as a major asset for science and for humanity. In terms of document repositories, India proudly occupies the second place in the number of DSpace installations nationally, after the US. Libraries have played an active role in installing and managing such digital repositories of publications. The Library and Information Science community has always been at the forefront in the world-wide advocacy and implementation of 'Open Access to Information'. The library community and research institutions must now address the challenge of research data and ensure that data is well-managed and made Open by default. India has one of the largest scientific communities in the world generating huge quantities of scientific and research data. The Government of India has mandated opening up data by all publicly funded institutes and organizations [NDSAP-2012]. With the growing interest in Open data, libraries in near the future will have a significant role in collecting and organizing and managing research data sets. Data management presents its own challenges. The often discussed challenges include sheer volume, variety of formats, standards for description for retrieval purpose, tools and technology platform and data sharing policies. In order to introduce library and information science professionals to data management using popular open source tools, the Documentation Research and Training Center of the Indian Statistical Institute along with ICSU-CODATA announces an International Training Workshop on Open Data Repositories. The objective of this workshop is to promote and encourage scientific and research organizations to implement lightweight and sustainable 'Open Data Repositories' as an essential first step towards the improved stewardship of valuable data assets. The three-day workshop will include theoretical lectures and also hands on practical sessions on data repository software delivered by a pool of Indian and International experts.
