Indigenous knowledge has been noted to make a significant contribution to sustainable development of local communities, as it is seen as a set of perceptions, information, and behaviour that guide local community members to use the land and natural resources. The goal of managing indigenous knowledge is to provide the right information to the right people at the right time.Application of traditional knowledge has and will continue to immensely benefit the society at large. Hence, there is a need for preservation and conservation of traditional and indigenous knowledge culture resources for Sustainable Future. Simultaneously, it become equally significant that these cultural resources should get access to external world so that next generation come to know about the rich custom and traditions existed in India. It also focused the various methods of preservation of cultural resources, understating the copyrights, how to do basic research, writing skills and many more. For mapping & dissemination of Traditional and Indigenous knowledge, the ICT can play a major role. Thus the programme will highlight how ICT can be used in preservation and conservation of Traditional and Indigenous knowledge culture resources.In the said background, the three days’ workshop will to be conducted on March 15-17, 2017 at National Institute of Technology (NIT), Silchar. OBJECTIVES The workshop main objectives of the programme is to introduce, train, motivate and enrich the knowledge of the young scholars of North East India which helps them to understand, study, document and safeguard the rich cultures of the region. The main aim of the workshop is to expose participants to the state-of-the art technology (ICT Tools) available to map, conserve & preserve the cultural resources of the North Eastern Region. Dear Professionals, With progress of time, the use of cyber techniques and technologies is being increased. A Librarian needs to have a more sound knowledge of the same. On the other hand, there is no need to have illustrated knowledge of cataloguing, as it is now generated by library management software now-a-days. Need of classification also retards, if the book has DDC number on back-title page. Therefore I have to made two suggestions to LIS community and UGC also: 1. The LIS syllabus should cover larger area of cyber and IT technologies including installation of different software at different platforms, operating systems etc. 2. There should an institution in India which could provide *call numbers* in process of publishing of a book. It will save time of libraries, as only one person is needed to give a number. In such situations, *Classification and Cataloguing *can be taught as optional subjects in the universities. These are my opinions which needs discussions, if found relevant by LIS community. An Appeal to the Karnataka State College Librarians Association (KSCLA)

Dear Sir, This appeal is in connection with the recent circular issued (https://tinyurl.com/jo6u66s) by the Department of Collegiate Education (DCE), Karnataka with regard to utilizing Reading Room (library) fund for making classroom lecture videos of the teachers. The DCE has once again put its hands on RR fund without considering the libraries and librarians plight in college libraries. Reading Room found is exclusively meant for library development but on what basis DCE has given permission to utilize RR fund for making faculty videos is clueless. In most of the govt. degree colleges RR fund is the only major source for subscribing journals, purchasing library furniture, library related stationery, books in case of urgent requirement and moreover for automating library services. Usually the amount collected from students for RR fund is very tiny ranging between 60 rupees to 100 rupees per students. In many colleges RR fund is very insufficient for routine library work. Then how do library function? DCE has centralized the book purchase since 2015 and librarians have no say in book selection. Because of this many libraries have huge number of books which are of no use to both the faculty and students. Now RR fund for making faculty videos, for small colleges libraries where only very few permanent faculty utilizing RR fund for recording classroom lectures will not be problem but for big colleges libraries have to bear the brunt. The DCE circular is not clear about whether the videos are preserved in the college library or not. Librarians have not at all consulted or considered while taking this decision. If we give away RR funds for some other purpose how do we serve the user community better? I request KSCLA office bearers to intervene and ask DCE to re-consider the decision to utilize RR fund for making faculty video lectures and hereafter give due consideration for the plight of college libraries and librarians without putting them in isolation in library development matters. ------------------------- With best wishes Vasantha Raju N.GFGC-PeriyapatnaMysore Views are personal

Good news for Koha users in Kerala : SMS Send driver for eSMS Kerala service released as Free Software (FOSS)

Dear all, L2C2 Technologies has released the SMS::Send::IN::eSMS driver [1] required by Koha ILS users using the eSMS Kerala service provided by the Kerala State IT Mission under a Free Software. The development of the driver was made possible by the funding support of the State Librarian, State Central Library, Thiruvananthapurm (Trivandrum), Kerala, with KELTRON (Kerala State Electronics Development Corporation Ltd) acting as the facilitator. Any Koha library in the state of Kerala who are eligible to use the eSMS Kerala SMS service (provided by KSITM) can now freely implement SMS support using this driver. With this release, it becomes the second open source regional SMS::Send driver now available to Indian Koha users that can be freely downloaded from the Comprehensive Perl Archive Network or CPAN. Sending SMSes from Koha For a long time now Koha has supported sending of SMS (short message service) text messages [2] to library patrons and users about account creation, issue, return, fines, holds, overdues, purchase suggestions etc. To send out SMSes from Koha, we have to use the SMS service of a bulk transactional SMS service provider who provides that service. What are SMS::Send drivers and why does Koha need them? In order to communicate with the service provider’s messaging sending interface (also called messaging API), Koha uses a type of software called “SMS::Send driver”. The “catch” being that each service provider requires a different SMS Send driver. Sort of like the SIM card in our cellphones e.g. if we wish to use a Vodafone number we must have a Vodafone SIM card. However, unlike a SIM card the SMS::Send driver which is a software module written in the PERL language is not provided by the SMS service provider. The tools used are Questionnaire, Interview Schedule and Physical verification of books to identify the extent of damage caused. Samples were drawn from the select first grade colleges affiliated to the University of Mysore. The researcher has used simple averages and some statistical techniques to test and verify the hypotheses. The examiners have highly appreciated the work, which is more or less from the conventional research domain in LIS in the IT age. The findings and the results of the study are useful to all libraries in general and first grade college libraries in particular. I once gain request all the LIS friends to join me in the celebrations of the award of PhD to Mrs. Mamatha, N. from the University of Mysore, which has just now completed its centenary celebrations. Hardly do we get to hear any positive news about our public library system. Here is some good news. I am drawn to this story as my current interest (after retirement) is targeted towards the elderly population - providing info relevant to senior citizens. ============= Separate seats for elderly & the disabled in 485 libraries Feb 6, 2017, Bengaluru, DHNS There is good news for senior citizens and the disabled who hesitate to visit libraries for lack of comfortable sitting space. Seats will be reserved for them in 485 libraries across Karnataka, including 27 city central libraries in Bengaluru. Mayor G Padmavathi has instructed the Department of Public Library to reserve seats in Bengaluru’s libraries, after a senior citizen, K Jagannath, approached her. But the department has gone a step further and decided to reserve seats in the State Central Library, city central libraries, district libraries and their branch libraries. Jagannath had told the mayor that he cannot make use of the city central library in Jayanagar because there are no separate seats for senior citizens. He also noticed that physically challenged people face a similar problem. “I am a voracious reader and visiting libraries has been my habit. But most of the time, I found no space to sit and read. At this age, I cannot stand for hours together. I feel there should be some space reserved for elderly people,” he said. He took his plight to the mayor and the Department for the Empowerment of Differently Abled and Senior Citizens. Acknowledging his concerns, the mayor wrote to the Department of Public Library on January 4 to reserve space in Bengaluru’s libraries for elderly people, the physically challenged and women. Following the letter, the department has reserved four seats for elderly people and two for the disabled at the Jayanagar library. But Satish Kumar Hosamani, the director of the department, took a step further. In a circular on January 25, he directed all district-level public libraries and their branches to reserve seats for senior citizens and physically challenged people.
