Moreover, use patterns are shifting from print to electronic materials. Because of the proliferation of e-resources and user preferences for the electronic format, these resources are becoming essential mainstays of any library collection. Today’s e-resources consist of wide varieties of materials including journals, books, indexes, abstracts, encyclopaedias, reference books, aggregator databases, and full-text or partially full-text databases. As these resources change at a very rapid pace and as libraries continue to build larger collections of e-resources, finding ways to manage them effectively, from selection to licensing, is becoming a major challenge for librarians. The pursuit of electronic resources by libraries was driven by the core values of library science. It is possible to recognize in Ranganathan’s five laws of library science the motivation that drove libraries to incorporate electronic resources into services and collections. Paraphrased to better suit electronic resources, the laws read: resources are for use, every person his or her resource, every resource its user, save the time of the user, and the library is a growing organism. Each technological development in library electronic resources during the 20th century was intended to make access to resources more direct, convenient, and timely for the user. The implementation of electronic resources made the library a growing organism as libraries adapted processes and reorganized staff repeatedly to accommodate the changes inherent in the use of constantly changing technology. The workshop is intended to unearth the search and discovery of e-resources gives and hand-one practical experience of exploring the world of knowledge of e-resources for Post Graduate and Social Science Researchers. OBJECTIVES OF THE WORKSHOP The objectives of the workshop are: - To create a common understanding about e-resources that includes e-journals, databases, datasets, standards etc. - To develop strategies for digital rights management. - To experience firsthand training on searching of various e-resources. - To explore well designed techniques of storage of e-resources. - To redefine the strategies for an effective working relationship between librarians and users community. COURSE CONTENT · Copyright and Licensing · Open access resources- overview, identification and use · Dynamics and evolution of e-resources · Discovery of e-resources through WWW · Digital Rights Management (DRM) techniques · Preservation and maintenance of e-resources · Future trends of e-resources In addition to the above contents, there will be practical sessions incorporating multi-media presentations introducing each topic followed by discussions within the groups and individual exercises. During the workshop, the participants will build their own portfolios for storage and retrieval of e-resources and its management for their organizations. EXPECTED PARTICIPANTS The workshop will target working librarians of Social Science Colleges, Social scientists, Research scholars, working professionals, Post Graduate students from Social Science and Library & Information Science disciplines. BATCH SIZE 40 Participants (Selected and confirmed by MLSU on first cum need basis. There will be no Course Fee for participation in the workshop. All the selected participants (on first cum need basis) will be provided Workshop Kit, Breakfast, Tea, Working lunch and dinner. Rather than just books or journals, they are developing interactive and comprehensive learning modules where one can learn at his/her pace; can judge the performance or understanding levels and so on. Innovation in libraries also include introducing new services that directly appeal to users and as per their changing requirements. Innovation is not static and new innovative practices keep evolving as per change in users’ needs, technology and resources. Innovation is a continued journey. Though citationindexing was followed in indexing legal cases in U.S.A., Prof.Eugene Garefield wasthe pioneer in large scale implementation of this concept in the fields of science,Humanities and Social Sciences. I was also fortunate enough to attend his ThreeDay Lecture programme titled “Scientific Information & Citation Studies”sponsored by Sarada Ranganathan Endowment and held at DRTC on Nov. 14-16, 1983.Prof.Ganesh Bhattacharya chaired thelecture programme. The "Citation Indexing" was much different from conventional "subject Indexing" and hence received much appreciation and also ctiticism from the audience. Dear Sir, It is very sad to learnthat the pioneer of citation indexing Dr. Eugene Garfield is no more. His visionary product citation indexing databaseScience Citation Index (SCI) has altered the research landscape forever. Today Web of Science (WoS)has become synonym with quantitative measurement of scholarly publications. Itwas always pleasure to put hands on Eugene’s erstwhile print publications CurrentContents. Way back in 2002 and 2003 I had seen professors and researchers desperatelylooking for Current Contents in Mysore University Library and note down bibliographicalentries of to be published research articles in their area of expertise. Thoughhe was graduated in Chemistry, because of his love for library Science, he obtaineda degree in LIS. Dr. Eugene Garfield wrote series of article on our great legendaryLIS scientist Dr. S.R. "Dr. Eugene Garfield is the founder of the Institute for Scientific Information (ISI) and a pioneer in the field of citation analysis. Garfield studied at the University of Colorado and Berkeley before getting a degree in chemistry from Columbia University in 1948. During the early 1950s he worked on the Welch Library indexing project at the John Hopkins University School of Medicine, sorting and indexing documents from medical papers and journals. With a graduate degree in library sciences from Columbia University, Garfield went into business as a "documentation consultant" while working on his doctorate in structural linguistics. He founded the ISI in 1960 and developed an indexing system for science literature, based on the analysis of citations used within a given work. Works earn an "impact factor," a measure of citations to other science journals that serves as an indicator of their importance in the field. The more citations in reputable journals, the higher the impact factor. The ISI sold subscriptions to their publication the Science Citation Index, and over time grew to include the Social Sciences Citation Index (SSCI) and the Arts & Humanities Citation Index (A&HCI). It is a great loss to the library and information science profession and the entire world of science community. His theories and concepts were discussed and debated across the world by the scientific community. Garfield founded the Institute for Scientific Information (ISI) in 1955. Best Koha Implementation Award - 2017

Dear Friends, The 2nd National Koha Conclave concluded last week at TCS, Pune with the announcement of the Best Koha Implementation Award 2017. There were 11 libraries in India who had sent their nominations which were reviewed by a Jury of four people including Mr. Chris Cormack, who was the Chief Resource Person at the Conclave. After a very diligent review by the Jury, the Best Koha Implementation Award was announced jointly to the Vikram Sarabhai Library, Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad and Mysore University Library, Mysore. The award trophy was presented by Mr. Chris Cormack and Mr. N V Sathyanarayana to the representatives of the IIM Ahmedabad library at the conclave on the last day of the event. Since no representative from Mysore University Library was present, the trophy will be presented to the University Library during a separate function in the next couple of weeks. Informatics and the Koha community congratulates both IIM Ahmedabad Library and Mysore University Library for implementing Koha in the most innovative ways leading to its best utilization for the Library and its users.
