They cannot survive and thrive as alien bodies or, to use the language of systems theory, as closed systems with impermeable boundaries. The mission of academic libraries is to support research, education, and scholarship. Historically, libraries have supported this mission by organizing and providing access to information, special collections, and creating physical spaces for collaboration and scholarship. While the broad mission of academic libraries is largely unchanged, transformations in technology, media, and culture are driving fundamental changes in the production and consumption of information and the practice of scholarship. As a result, academic libraries are rethinking their strategies and services to meet the challenges of the digital world and the demands of the born digital generation. Libraries, in particular, are confronting these challenges as the nature of scientific practice is being dramatically transformed by information technologies. Promises and Challenges for Libraries The promises include the following: the potential for new scientific discoveries that are possible only through large-scale, computational analyses; a new era of transparency and replicability in scientific methods and results; and the potential for widespread democratization of scientific research, given the increasing ubiquity of open access data sources and protocols. However, hidden in these examples are several challenges for universities and their libraries. Libraries are increasingly being asked to play a leadership role in helping universities capture and organize their intellectual assets, such as faculty publications, student dissertations, project reports, and scientific data sets. To understand how libraries will change by the mid-21st century, people need to understand what function they currently serve. At their core, libraries in the information age provide a public means of accessing knowledge. The hallmark of future libraries, meanwhile, will be hyper-connectivity. They'll reflect our increasing reliance on social media, streaming content, and open-source data. The objective of the conference is to create a platform for exchange ideas of the library community related to current trends. Therefore, this conference will keep you updated and make it stimulating and enlightening experience. Regarding language codes in bibliographic entry

Hi, Under language codes of 008/35-37 and also under 041$a I added language code. for eg: tel for Telugu language. But I do not see any difference to the view of the record, except that the marc tags contains that values. Adding these fields data will enable library team to understand the language of the material. My question is, How will the users of the OPAC, who do not know about marc language codes will understand the item language, if not updated any where like in 546$a. Also I wanted to know how other libraries are updating the language of the material in koha while entering bibliographic details apart from entering the details in 546$a. What are you doing after retirement-- Reflections of a retired librarian What are you doing after retirement-- Reflections of a retired librarian Unlike the case of many of my friends, my retirement was not sharp on any specific day. It was gradual. In fact I retired thrice. First, I took voluntary retirement (VRS) from IDL in 1992. Then joined a private firm in Bangalore; thereafter served Satyam Computers for close to nine years. As a second time retirement, I 'Formally" retired from Satyam in 2000, continued as Advisor for a couple of years with tapering responsibilities and equally tapering remunerations; Thereafter I took up several post retirement assignments (consultancies) and projects for periods varying from three months to four years; Finally, for the third time, I said bye to active employment on 30th September 2006. Ever since then I am not 'working'! Therefore during the past two decades whenever I bump into old friends I face the question: "What are you doing after retirement?" Answers have been varying according to when that Q was posed. When this question is asked, there are lots of people who squirm mentally and wrestle within themselves for a respectable reply. For, they are not doing 'anything'! Is it possible for a person to be not doing anything? Suddenly a couple of weeks ago I posed this question to myself to get an honest answer. Many bits of replies came up: Serving senior citizens; attending meetings; getting associated with half a dozen organizations; During such meetings meet, eat, chat and give your two cents worth of ideas; blog; write articles; help others with information; run a web group; give lectures etc. Quite a bit of introspection, I went through. One fact that dazzled right on my face is this: I have been a librarian from 1964 and continue to be a librarian all through, right now including, never forsaking this role ever. As Shiyali Ramamirtha Ranganathan says a library is a trinity of books, reader and the librarian. The Librarian brings the book (information) and the reader together. During my active life readers who benefitted by library service varied from academic students, staff, industrial workers, research staff, managerial work force, IT professionals, and others. Post retirement, the focus of beneficiary changed to senior citizens (aka older persons, elders, retirees, oldsters, geezers, boomers etc). I started specializing in bringing information containers (books, articles, stories, news etc) of special interest to the age group 55+ to the desktop of senior citizens. Thereby, even now, I am a librarian at heart and information dissemination is the closest activity that I enjoy. Next time you ask me: "what are you doing after retirement?" CHAIN INDEXING <https://librarianshipstudies.blogspot.com/2017/04/chain-indexing.html> ➨ Chain Indexing or Chain Procedure is a mechanical method to derive subject index entries or subject headings from the class number of the document. It was developed by Dr. S.R. Ranganathan. He first mentioned this in his book “Theory of Library Catalogue” in 1938. In Chain Procedure, the indexer or cataloguer is supposed to start from where the classifier has left. No duplication of work is to be done. He/she has to derive subject headings or class index entries from the digit by digit interpretation of the class number of the document in the reverse direction, to provide the alphabetical approach to the subject of the document. Ranganathan designed this new method of deriving verbal subject heading in 1934 to provide the subject approach to documents through the alphabetical part of a classified catalogue. This method was distinctly different from the enumerated subject heading systems like LCSH or SLSH. He discerned that classification and subject indexing were two sides of the same coin. Classifying a document is the translation of its specific subject into an artificial language of ordinal numbers which results in the formation of a class number linking together all the isolate ideas in the form of a chain. This chain of class numbers is retranslated into its verbal equivalent to formulate a subject heading that represents the subject contents of the document. The class number itself is the result of subject analysis of a document into its facet ideas and linked together by a set of indicator digits, particularly when a classification system like Colon Classification is used for the purpose. As this chain is used for deriving subject entries on the basis of a set of rules and procedures, this new system was called ‘Chain Procedure’. This approach inspired in many other models of subject indexing developed afterward, based upon classificatory principles and postulates. Chain Indexing was originally intended for use with Colon Classification. However, it may be applied to any scheme of classification whose notation follows a hierarchical pattern. How can I improve my English?

Dear Friends, I have personally come across the situations several times where I found my friends stating the problem of English speaking and writing. The reason is that English is not our mother language. The language English is spoken throughout the world…in another word, you can say ‘English is an International Language’ but it does not mean that you can’t learn this language. Many times, I have met very good and knowledgeable people in their domain but weak in presentation of their knowledge. First of all, I just want to suggest that don’t consider English requires lot of knowledge to speak or write. I shall mention here that English Speaking is an art and all you need to know is English Grammar and strong vocabulary with their proper use. In order to improve English, I suggest the following to do regularly and I strongly believe that you can improve your English in one or maximum two months. 1. Learn the Basic Grammar In order to learn proper English, first you require a good English Grammar Book which can help you in learning the rules of basic English grammar. There are many good books on English Grammar which you can buy or even can get through Internet in PDF format. Read the Grammar and memorize them for proper sentence framing. English Grammar is very essential for correct speaking or writing. Read the News Paper / Story Once you are comfortable with English Grammar, the next is you need the paragraphs which can enable or bring a situation to understand the grammar used in paragraph writing. The best method is to read any English News Paper daily at least for half an hour. In the beginning, you may find this very boring because you may not understand the lines written in paragraphs. But best advice is not to leave the habit of reading newspaper daily. To find the reading more interesting, you may replace the News Paper with Story Books which creates interest while reading. While reading, observe the grammar used in paragraphs in News Papers/ Story book. 3. Note Down the Vocabulary from News Paper / Story Books While reading the News Paper / Story Book, you will come across many words which you may not know. Just note down in any note book and keep noting down regularly the difficult words in your copy. After that refer any good English dictionary and note down their meaning with examples against the words you have noted down from newspaper. But the most important part is the revision every day and see the example of words how they can be used. 4. Speak loudly in front of mirror After one month of time, you will find that you will have enough vocabulary to start with speaking. So far, you have learned the Basic English Grammar and collected the words from News Paper / Story Books. The next is to use them while speaking or writing. The best method to learn speaking is to stand in front of mirror and speak loudly starting with small sentences like I am going, you are coming etc. Many people know English but while speaking they find difficult to speak because they might not have got enough environment to speak with perfect pronunciation. While speaking English, one thing is very important and that is speaking correctly with correct pronunciation which may be developed with regular practice in front of mirror. 5. Write your own created story In order to learn English, you also need to learn writing good communication skill in English which only can be developed with lot of writing practice. The best method I suggest is to create your own story and try to give them a proper shape in paragraph with proper use of Grammar and Vocabulary with their uses at appropriate places. You will find after sometime that your writing skill gradually get improved. 6. Apply with your friends, family members etc. to kill hesitation Generally, you may find difficult to speak English directly with anyone as English is not our mother tongue and many of us are also not habitual to it while speaking or writing and because of this many of us have the problem of hesitation. We get fear in mind of making mistakes which brings hesitation. The best method to kill hesitation is to find your friends, family members etc. for half an hour and try to communicate with them in English. If you continuously do this, you will find that you start getting correct pronunciation within few days and also the speed with accuracy. Slowly, you get confidence of not making mistakes and kill your hesitation of speaking. 7. Learn from mistakes It is natural that when you start learning English, you will commit lot of mistakes but it does not mean you should give up learning. The best suggestion is observing the mistakes and learn from it and don’t repeat the same mistakes in next conversation. For ex. I have come across many people who make mistake in gender in the beginning. 8. Have conversation with people who know English Once you are little comfortable with speaking and writing, try to find someone who speaks good English. Find some time with the person to communicate on regular basis. Perhaps, this may not be possible. So in this case, watch regular English News Channel where you will get appropriate English Speaking Friend i.e. News Reporter. Observe thoroughly the way reporter speaks and try to speak in the same way. You will find soon that you start speaking better English. Please remember, English Speaking or Writing is not impossible. As an important cultural partner to Creative Commons, Europeana’s platform strengthens the commons through its large, searchable collection of digital records - over 54 million digitized items (books, photos, paintings, television broadcasts and 3D objects) from nearly 4,000 European libraries, archives, museums and audiovisual galleries. As CC Search continues to grow, more material from this rich repository of cultural heritage images, data, and records will be added. Other leading institutions that have partnered with Creative Commons include the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, and New York Public Library. Indian galleries, archives, libraries and museums have great collections that we could share with the world. The Ministry of Culture could take the lead to create the Indian equivalent of Europeana and the Digital Public Library of America (DPLA) and make the entire collection accessible through a CC license. I am sure LIS professionals in India will only be happy to help such a project.
