Dear Friends and Colleagues, There have been many discussions in this forum on the topic of Open Access (OA), particularly led by Arunachalam. As someone who has been an active participant in the OA movement and having pioneered the Vidyanidhi Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations (ETDs) back in 2000 — which helped catalyze later ETD and digital library efforts in India — it was an absolute delight and privilege to have an in-depth conversation with my dear friend, Jean-Claude Guédon, the maverick champion of OA, in the latest episode of InfoFire titled "Whither Open Access." Our chat was nostalgic as we reminisced about our time on the NDLTD Steering Committee from 2002 to 2012, while delving into the evolving landscape of academic publishing. We discussed the challenges posed by the commercialization of OA and explored whether the diamond model could offer a sustainable path forward, especially as more institutions rethink how research is disseminated. In libraries, the structured arrangement of knowledge through classification systems, metadata, and indexing plays a critical role in ensuring that users can find relevant resources quickly and accurately. However, with the exponential growth of digital content, traditional methods face significant challenges in information retrieval (IR), including scalability, context relevance, and precision. This seminar will explore the importance of knowledge organization in libraries, focusing on how well-structured systems underpin the entire library ecosystem. It will also delve into the growing challenges in modern IR, such as handling unstructured data, managing large datasets, and providing personalized search experiences. Advanced Training programme on Bibliometrics and Research Output Analysis

INFLIBNET is organizing a five days Advanced Training programme on Bibliometrics and Research Output Analysis during 2 - 6 Dec 2024. The programme will provide the participants a sound overview of bibliometric methods, Bibliometric data sources, data processing and performance indicators related to bibliometric analysis and mapping. It will provide awareness about the most commonly used database, how to build-up relevant indicators and how to interpret the data. Special emphasis will be given to indicators used in research evaluation. Theoretically imparted knowledge will be consolidated with demonstration on various tools such as Bibliometrix, Biblioshiny, VOSviewer, etc. Through a combination of expert-led lectures, hands-on training, and real-world case studies, attendees will gain proficiency in utilizing bibliometric tools and techniques, enabling them to make informed decisions in research evaluation. Major Topics Following topics will be covered in the training: v Overview of Bibliometrics v Mathematical Foundation of Bibliometrics/Scientometrics v Bibliometrics Tools and Techniques such as Bibliometrix, Biblioshiny, VOSviewer, etc. v Bibliometric Methods for Subject Delineation v Measuring Research Impact v Network Analysis and Visualization v Open Research Data: Access, API and Integration v Advanced Bibliometric Methods for Evaluation, Ranking and Mapping of Research v Bibliometric Indicators and Ranking of University Research Performance v Clarivate Analytics’ Web of Science and Elsevier’s Scopus Databases Resource Persons The lecturers are prominent researchers, scientists/professors in the field of bibliometrics. They also have extensive experience with the application of bibliometric analysis in a research evaluation. Venue The training will be conducted in Offline Mode at Information and Library Network Centre, Infocity, Gandhinagar 382007, Gujarat, India. Fee The registration fee is Rs. 6,000.00 (Rupees Six Thousand only) per person without accommodation and Rs. 10,000.00 (Rupees Ten Thousand Only) with accommodation which is inclusive of GST rates. It covers the cost of a training programme kit containing training materials and lunch during the training period. The payment should be made through Demand Draft in favour of INFLIBNET Centre payable at Gandhinagar along with filled-in registration form. Fee is non-refundable and non-adjustable. The Centre also accepts payment by NEFT /RTGS for the training. The bank account details will be shared on request.
