A far cry from the hard-shelled mechanical pets of the early 2000s, these more realistic “care bots” are providing companionship to nursing home residents — a population known to experience loneliness and isolation. The benefits of robotic pets for elder care may extend far beyond comfort and quality of life. Over 1,600 of these towering, nine-and-a-half-foot monoliths — their double-sided screens festooned with ads and fun facts — have been installed across the city since early 2016. Mayor Bill de Blasio has celebrated their ability to provide “the fastest and largest municipal Wi-Fi network in the world” as “a critical step toward a more equal, open, and connected city for every New Yorker, in every borough.” Anyone can use the kiosks’ Android tablets to search for directions and services; they are also equipped with charging stations, 911 buttons, and phones for free domestic calls. But even as the kiosks have provided important services to connect New Yorkers, they may also represent a troubling expansion of the city’s surveillance network, potentially connecting every borough to a new level of invasive monitoring. Each kiosk has three cameras, 30 sensors, and heightened sight lines for viewing above crowds. Since plans for LinkNYC were first unveiled, journalists, residents, and civil liberties experts have raised concerns that the internet kiosks might be storing sensitive data about its users and possibly tracking their movements. A Systematic Review* Contract cheating, where students recruit a third party to undertake their assignments, is frequently reported to be increasing, presenting a threat to academic standards and quality. Many incidents involve payment of the third party, often a so-called “Essay Mill,” giving contract cheating a commercial aspect. This study synthesized findings from prior research to try and determine how common commercial contract cheating is in Higher Education, and test whether it is increasing. It also sought to evaluate the quality of the research evidence which addresses those questions. Recommendations are made for future studies on academic integrity and contract cheating specifically. So began a sequence of events that saw Ibrahim Diallo fired from his job, not by his manager but by a machine. He has detailed his story in a blogpost which he hopes will serve as a warning to firms about relying too much on automation. "Automation can be an asset to a company, but there needs to be a way for humans to take over if the machine makes a mistake," he writes. The story of Mr Diallo's sacking by machine began when his entry pass to the Los Angeles skyscraper where his office was based failed to work, forcing him to rely on the security guard to allow him entry. Dear LIS Forum Member, We request your views, feedback and suggestions for the following: The Library of the Institute of Mathematical Sciences, Chennai has over a period accumulated 50000+ bound volumes of about 600+ print journals (maths, physics and theoretical computer sciences) stored in the compact mobile racks. Of which, we have also got perpetual access rights to over 40000 volumes. We have taken a policy that we no longer bind journal issues for which we have perpetual access. In view of this and severe space constraints to store bound volumes, we are exploring options for weeding out of the bound volumes of journals. Unfortunately, there is no library weed out policy under general financial rules of government as we are a government funded institution. In the absence of established guidelines by any government agencies, are there any ways by which we can weed out library bound volumes of journals?. This is to request you to kindly share your views, suggestions and any guideline documents for library weed out policy. Here, a library professional should play the role as ‘Active Responder’ by attending the many queries at a time and also keep alive the unfulfilled demand till the demand is fulfilled. 2. Empathetic behavior: Empathy allows your inner conscious to feel other’s pain as if you have pain. A library professional must respond in empathetic manner to the library users and also must try to build the enough confidence in them to use library resources & services with self-help. 3. Service before Self: A library professional should enter the library with motto “Service before Self”. In another word, five laws of library science should always remain in mind and library professional must offer himself after service to the library. 4. Tactful Approach: Library is center of service where a user approaches with different attitudes and options. A tactful approach by library professional will help to deal the various types of users with ease and can avoid inviting bad name to the profession. 5. Perseverance: It is better to knock other door if library professional cannot devote his heart and soul to the profession as library profession requires very hard work and perseverance. Library profession is just not the last door for rejected soul rather it demands enough patience and disposition toward profession. 6. Service with Smile: A library professional must be capable enough to guide others in true sense.
