Library-in-the-Classroom and Classroom-in-the-Library are concepts evolving in practice too in libraries around the world. There is an intrinsic synergy between the classroom and the library as both are the places for learning. Classroom is the place for teacher assisted learning and library facilitates self-learning. E-Learning offers the advantage of both self-learning and teacher-assisted-learning. This synergy, we can imagine, is likely to lead to convergence of the library and the classroom in the emerging digital world where learning will be extensively driven by e-Learning models. The natural advantage of this convergence is an imperative recognition of Librarianship in a teaching role. Hence, e-Learning, which is lot more than providing access to e-Content, demands keener attention by Librarians. Library Technology Conclave (LTC2019) is the first ever conference focusing on the subject of e-Learning as an extended functional role opportunity for libraries. Dear Dr. D. V. Singh Sir, I totally agree with your views. There must be some logic behind every action. Be it an appointment or promotion or any other thing. There are many instances in our field where the institutes/ universities have violated the norms set for the purpose. There is no transparency in recruitments. We all raise our voice (on online forums only) against such practices when they happen and forget about them after few days. I understand that it is not possible for any one individual to continue the fight against injustice for longer period of time considering his own personal and workplace commitments. But, the professional bodies such as ILA can do it. The representatives of these bodies have volunteered themselves (while contesting elections) to work for the betterment of the profession. But, I have not seen or heard any postings/ communications from any ILA representative on this or any other subject concerning the profession. The DISCUSSIONS are good but, ONLY DISCUSSIONS are not good. Can we expect any course of action from any professional body on this front? Can these professional bodies also work for the things other than conducting conferences and seminars? The appointment of an expert from some other field to one of the top posts in LIS is not the matter of concern; the matter of concern is the diminishing image of the librarians in the society. We need to change this trend. Dear Sir, Few professionals have raised the issue of appointment of a non professional person as Director of INFLIBNET. Recently Dr. Sharmila Ghosh has written that Berkeley Labs are appointing students from social sciences for their research work I want to give an example from India. Professor Vishwatathan of IISc was appointed Director of INSDOC (now NISCAIR). I understand he was also a non professional like the present director of INFLIBNET. I don't understand why this hue and cry. Judge the individual by his works he does as director. Shoumojit Banerjee Pune 19 December 2018 21:26 IST Updated: 19 December 2018 22:36 IST BORI houses one of South Asia’s largest collection of rare manuscripts The Bhandarkar Oriental Research Institute (BORI), which houses one of South Asia’s largest and most invaluable agglomeration of rare manuscripts, opened its treasure vault digitally by launching an e-library of ancient religious and historical works on Wednesday. Nearly 1,000 rare books and manuscripts in Sanskrit and its related languages are presently available for readers worldwide to savour in this first phase of digitisation. The institute, named after legendary Indologist Ramkrishna Gopal Bhandarkar, was set up in 1917 and has in its possession nearly two-and-a-half-lakh rare books and manuscripts, some of them in an extremely brittle state. “The rationale behind the e-library is to preserve at least some of these books. Hence, we chose to digitise 20,000 among the rarest-of-the rare books and four to five thousand will be available for readers to read them online for free,” said noted Indologist Prof. Shrikant Bahulkar. Three fully-automated Zeutschel high-resolution German scanners were specially procured by the institute at a cost of ₹15 lakh each. “ We began with screening the two lakh-plus manuscripts to zero down on the ones we would digitise,” said Mithilesh Kulkarni of Nyansa, a firm specialising in heritage digitisation. Chinmay Bhandari of Nyansa said that the entire process was one of ‘non-destructive’ digitising, which ensured that even books in decrepit condition were preserved while scanning. “For the past two years, our 15-member team was working in three shifts every day and we digitised more than 3 lakh pages each month,” Mr. Bhandari said. Among the BORI’s notable publications are a 19-volume edition of The Mahabharata, collated with copious critical material, and legendary Sanskrit scholar P.V. Dear Colleagues, Shocked to see the reactions of some of my professional colleagues to the news of the appointment of New Director to the INFLIBNET. What is wrong in it? We all kept quite when many of the IITs/ NITs/ Central and State Universities in the country appointed Professors from other departments as the In-Charge/ HODs of the their libraries ; we maintained our silence when the institutes of eminanance in the country have reduced the Grade/ Academic Level of the librarians; we did nothing when many great institutions in the country have pushed the librarians from Academic to Administrative category. So, why there is an opposition now? Please think about our own inactions in the past. The Professional Associations both at the State and the National level have lost their voice and importance. Dear Anand, You have absolutely nailed on the head, about what we preach and practice. We need to rectify all such anomalies by representing through AIFUCTO and various other (such) organizations. We will not be able to make them understand about the requirement of Library Information Science Professionals in Managing any Library Network. It is also not possible for us to show our skills and ability if the other side do have some blind person. I think, the library associations could have some mass movement in this regards.
