About a year ago, Dr Abel Packer (SciELO and PAHO) requested me to contribute an account of my journey in (the advocacy and promotion of) Open Access for a book to be brought out as part of celebrating the 25th anniversary of SciELO, by far the most successful initiative from the global South in community-led STEM journal publishing. Together with Redalyc and CLACSO, SciELO has made a significant impact in the dissemination of knowledge in science and scholarship, especially in Ibero-America, playing, as it were, the role of a valiant David against the Goliath represented by the publishing oligarchy from the Global North and its an insatiable thirst for making publishing a perpetual moneymaking machine. Job Description: The program offers a valuable opportunity to gain hands-on experience and practical knowledge in various library functions, encompassing a wide range of operations such as acquiring content (both print and digital), classification, cataloging, organizing information resources, document delivery services, digital information services, research support, processing research publications, managing research data, designing and developing information systems and services, and web-based information services, among others. Remuneration: A consolidated remuneration of Rs. 31,000 per month will be paid to the selected candidate. Essential Qualifications: The candidate must have a regular Master of Library and Information Science (MLISc) and a Bachelor’s Degree in any discipline from a recognized university. The candidate should have secured a minimum of 60% or equivalent in both degrees. Only those who have completed MLISc in 2023 and 2024 are eligible to apply. Should not our funding agencies such as DST, DBT and CSIR look into the publications of their fundees in these institutions? Their participation may be looked into by the ethical committees of our Science Academies and UGC. Could the impact of ranking agencies such as THE, QS and NIRF and the use of metrics by all and sundry without proper understanding of how to use them intelligently be the reasons for the proliferation of such practices ?
