Availability of Cloud technologies have influenced Big Data products, their architecture, applications and offering continuously. In this talk we track the Cloud technology trends and how they have influenced the way Big Data is practiced. Specifically we talk about the effects of serverless computing, cloud storage, containerization, streaming architectures and new programming languages on Big Data products and services. Throughout the talk we bring in examples from applications of Data Lakes for digital marketing. About the Speaker: Mr. Thiruvalluvan has been building software systems for three decades. Apart from his day job, he is presently the PMC Chair of Apache Avro Project, which he helped found in 2009. His current interests include large scale distributed systems for batch and low-latency web services. He has built some innovative performant and resilient products on top of the current and past crop of Big Data platforms. In the past he worked on desktop search, web search and advertising platforms, cloud platforms and deployment automation in Yahoo! He has been developing and using cloud product for the past 10 years and has been in the forefront of server-less computing. I am very much saddened to know passing away of Prof. K S Nagarajan, former head, Regional Centre, INSDOC, Bengaluru. He taught us the subject of Reprography during our INSDOC Training:1976-77. He was an excellent teacher. I met him few months back in a hospital where he came for consultation. We discussed lot of things reminisising INSDOC days. During my association with RRI, he visited the library for consultation on Carnatic Music compositions. We provided all available information for developing a database. We lost one of the finest library professionals. We pray the Almighty to give enough strength to the bereaved family to bear the loss. Let his soul rest in peace. Late Mr. K.S. Nagarajan

As reported earlier, we deeply regret to inform the sad demise of Mr. K. S Nagarajan a retired senior information Professional of INSDOC (an organ of CSIR) presently known as NISCAIR, on 12th May at Bangalore at the age of 91. Mr. Nagarajan started his career at National Aeronautical Laboratory, Bangalore and later shifted to INSDOC an organ of CSIR. He was Officer- in- Charge of the Bangalore Centre of INSDOC from 1964 and retired as the Head, Regional Office, INSDOC in 1987. In 1967 when the Reprography technique was in nascent stage in India, Mr. Nagarajan made a detailed study of the technique, the use of various tools and instruments and published a technical paper on the ‘State of Reprography in India’ in 1967 in the Annals of Library Science. He was a recipient of the UNESCO fellowship during 1954-55 to visit USA & Europe to study the reprographic techniques then prevalent in the advanced countries. He taught Reprography course to the students of ADR at INSDOC Headquarters at New Delhi. He played an important role in bringing out various Union Catalogues of Scientific periodicals brought out by INSDOC. He published a number of articles on Reprography in different learned L & IS journals. He was the first Vice-President of Karnataka Library Association started after the Mysore Library Association became defunct. Apart from his contributions to the field of L& IS (especially Reprography) he was a well known Musicologist. After his retirement, he set up a multi-indexed and computerised database of Carnatic Music Compositions, lyricists and composers which was highly acclaimed. He was recognized for his phenomenal work of compilation and indexing by Gayana Samaja by bestowing the Artist of the year award in 2003 and a Life Time Achievement Award from Kensri School, Bangalore in 2011. He was invited by the prestigious Music Academy of Madras to deliver a lecture cum demonstration on his work in the December season in 1999. Dear Sir It is very sad to know the demise of Mr KS Nagarajan, who was heading INSDOC B'lore nicely with taking classes at DRTC also. After retirement I met him at Malleswaram with musical activity. He was so dnamic even after retirement making music collections in CD/DVDs. Also very sad to hear Dr Vatsala Nagarajan the demise within three days. May their soul rest in peace. Friends: Please see: this report from the European Universities Association, released a few days ago: 2019 Big Deals Survey Report:: An Updated Mapping of Major Scholarly Publishing Contracts in Europe https://eua.eu/downloads/publications/2019%20big%20deals%20report.pdf *Key figures on Big Deals costs: * • At least 1.025 billion euros are spent overall, every year in electronic resources (including periodicals, databases, e-books) by 31 consortia surveyed in 30 European countries. • Periodicals alone account for 726 million euros per year across all consortia. 72% of these costs are borne from university budgets. • 475 million euros per year are spent in periodical Big Deal contracts with five of the largest publishers (Elsevier, Springer Nature, Taylor & Francis, Wiley, American Chemical Society). • Contracts with the largest five publishers are subject to an average annual cost increase of 3.6% *Recommendations: * • Despite their substantial contribution to Big Deals, universities are yet to exercise market power commensurate with their financial contributions. Universities and negotiating consortia need to be aware of this, of the causes of and ways to improve the situation. Part of the challenge may be due to the still confidential nature of most Big Deal contracts and to the low levels of information shared between consortia. Changes in national and European regulations, platforms to increase dialogue between negotiating consortia, more transparency and greater Big Deal contract disclosure are all important ways to improve leverage when it comes to negotiating Big Deals. • University leadership should be more involved in Big Deal negotiations, supported by experts in this area, such as the university librarians or national librarians. Given the importance of Big Deal negotiations for university budgets, they require both a political and a technical commitment.
