MANLIBNET-3B International Travel Grant

Dear All, To promote research in LIS, MANLIBNET-Bharat Book Bureau (3B) International Travel Grant of about Rs. 65000/- a year is given to MANLIBNET members for presenting an original and unpublished paper in an International Library Conference held outside India. Terms and Conditions: * Grant shall be given to MANLIBNET (http://www.manlibnet.in/ [1]) members only. They would become eligible for this grant preferably after 3 years of regular membership. * The grant shall cover registration, travel and accommodation charges. Visa Application fee shall not be covered by the grant. * Winners of the award shall be free to apply to other funding agencies to meet the shortfall, if any. However, the same needs to be disclosed to MANLIBNET. * Application for availing travel grant shall be supported by letters from conference organizers about acceptance of paper and invitation to attend the conference. * Winner of the grant shall not be entitled to apply for next five years. Limit shall be 3 years if there are no other applicants during that particular year. Winners of the grant, however, shall be free to apply for any other travel grant constituted by MANLIBNET in the future. * If for any reason, the candidate for the above grant is not available in a particular year, two delegates may be sent the next year. * The decision of the Selection Committee shall be final and binding. The Committee may reject all applications without assigning any reason. * Canvassing in any form will be a disqualification * To keep the accounting process simple, MANLIBNET would encourage the awardee of the grant to use the full amount of this grant either for registration, travel or accommodation expenses. * Upon receipt of MANLIBNET's confirmation about the grant, the awardee would send self-attested copies of the invitation, paper acceptance communication to the General Secretary, MANLIBNET (refer to MANLIBNET website for postal address). * On completion of travel, the awardee has to submit original bills (for an amount equivalent to the grant given by MANLIBNET) to MANLIBNET. Such bills may include air tickets, boarding passes, registration fee receipt, hotel bills etc. * A written declaration has to be submitted to the General Secretary, MANLIBNET within 30 days of returning to the country stating that the grant has been utilised for the purpose it was given to the awardee by MANLIBNET. * In case, for any reason, the awardee is not able to avail the grant, he/she will refund the grant amount in full to MANLIBNET within 30 days of returning to the country. * The awardee will be required to send a brief conference report to the President/General Secretary, MANLIBNET within 30 days of his/her return to the country. * The awardee will be required to share his experience of the travel/paper presentation with delegates of next annual MANLIBNET conference. For attending the conference, MANLIBNET will not provide any financial support to the awardee. However, registration fee will be waived off for the awardee. * In case of any breach of contract/agreement/terms & conditions (as stated above), the awardee will refund the entire grant amount to MANLIBNET within 30 days of receipt of any communication to this effect from MANLIBNET Award Committee. * In case the awardee (on receipt of communication from MANLIBNET) accepts the above, he/she may print all the terms and conditions on a non-judicial stamp paper of Rs. 100/-, give a declaration that he/she accepts all terms of the grant, sign it and send the same to Dr. Akhtar Parvez, University Librarian, Maulana Azad National Urdu University, Gachibowli, Hyderabad 500 032. Quite often many scientific discoveries and innovations fail to reach the society because of the closed scientific publications. If Science is built based on existing knowledge it needs to reach every one and hence Open Science leads the knowledge transaction. This track addresses the challenges and issues and pave the way to develop and nurture open science. Track 2: Peer Review Peer review is the process by which experts critically examine the research contributions using standard metrics. Peer review helps maintain and enhance quality both directly by detecting weaknesses and errors in specific works. These reviews enable to decide publication, research grants, employment, promotion, and tenure. Peer review promotes accountability and improves the quality of work. Track 3: Content and Text mining based metrics This track enables to present works that use numeric indices to process unstructured (textual) information and to build various data mining (statistical and machine learning) algorithms. Information can be extracted to derive summaries for the words contained in the documents or to compute summaries for the documents based on the words contained in them. One can analyze words, clusters of words used in documents, and we could analyze documents and determine similarities between them or how they are related to other variables. The studies of text mining will “turn text into numbers” (meaningful indices), which can then be incorporated in other analyses. All submitted papers will be reviewed by a double-blind (at least three reviewers), and participative peer review. The review process will enable the selection process of those that will be accepted for their presentation at the international conference. Authors of accepted papers who registered in the conference can have access to the evaluations and possible feedback provided by the reviewers who recommended the acceptance of their papers, so they can accordingly improve the final version of their papers. Mentoring support is available to young researchers and authors of developing countries. Track 4: Technology Transfer Metrics The technology transfer enables the outreach of the research outcomes to a wider level. The technology transfer measures are of interest to practitioners, program managers, and policymakers in the evaluation of technology transfer programs. Building metrics can lead to a better measurement of effectiveness, efficiency, and return on investment. The introduction of newer metrics will be helpful to identify the benchmarking tools. The proposed track will discuss the currently existing metrics and the research on the development of new metrics as well as their applications. This is a very interesting information. I used to hear similar utterances from many of my colleagues. The fact is open access books collect dust, mites, bacteria etc...Library professionals do get Allergy, Asthama,Skin problems ,eczema,psoriasis,pulmonary diseases and they are considered occupational hazards. For many people,visiting their local library and picking up a book knowing it’s gone through several other hands can be a source of amazement. But for a skittish public in the 1890s, there was a nagging fear that handling a borrowed book could infect them with smallpox, scarlet fever, or tuberculosis. The pleasure of owning a library card became an exercise in terror. In a fantastic article recently posted on Smithsonian <https://www.smithsonianmag.com/history/during-great-book-scare-people-worri…>, writer Joseph Hayes chronicles an extended bout of hysteria related to lending libraries in the United States and abroad. With news accounts of a Nebraskan librarian’s death from tuberculosis in 1895 being attributed to her handling of books, the public grew concerned that volumes could be contaminated by people harboring infectious diseases. While it seems as though this concern should be valid for other things repeatedly handled by the public—like doorknobs, for example—library books were singled out for their seeming ability to trap germs in pages that could then spring out when the book was opened. People were also fretful that someone with a fatal illness could cough onto the paper, expectorating tiny bits of germ-harboring tissue. Physicians did little to dampen the concern, proclaiming either no knowledge of whether books could transmit disease or plainly stating that it was possible. In the UK, the Public Health Act of 1875, which limited the sharing of contaminated items like bedding, was expanded in 1907 to include library books, with people known to carry disease prohibited from handling titles available to the general public. While paranoia was largely to blame for this bizarre belief, the panic actually aided conservative observers who feared certain books were salacious enough to corrupt the moral fabric. That libraries were being ostracized and books sat on shelves unread played into their objectives, and they attempted to reinforce the idea books were potential contagions whenever possible. Libraries began to experiment with methods for sterilizing books, including steam or formaldehyde solutions. It took years before the public panic subsided and no massive outbreaks of disease as a result of book borrowing materialized.
