Friends, Many of you may know that OpenAlex has been going through a debugging phase and some observers thought it would take until the end of the year. Today I saw this blog, *https://blog.openalex.org/were-now-openalex/ <https://blog.openalex.org/were-now-openalex/>*, and I thought I should share it with you all. This is good news for many of us who cannot afford the high cost of commercial citation databases. Best Regards, Francis Francis Jayakanth JRD Tata Memorial Library IISc. _________________ Have you read Garfield’s two-part essay on Ranganathan, published in Current Contents in 1984? Garfield said: "A partial indicator of Ranganathan’s international impact is the number of citations to his work in the Science Citation Index (SCI ) and the Social Sciences Citation Index (SSC1 ). Over 400 publications cited his work over a 20-year period. Prolegomena to Library Classification, his comprehensive work on classification theory, is his most-cited publication. But, for a number of reasons, these citations are only a fraction of what a thorough search would establish. Not the least of three reasons is that our coverage in the field in the early days of SCI and SSC1 was rather selective and limited. Still, when compared to other library notables, it is remarkable how often Ranganathan’s work is cited, Indeed, when I began my recent talk at the Madras University library, I was moved to tell the audience that Ranganathan is to library science what Einstein is to physics." https://garfield.library.upenn.edu/essays/v7p037y1984.pdf (Part 1) https://garfield.library.upenn.edu/essays/v7p045y1984.pdf (Part 2)

Currency of Science: The promise and perils of scientific publishing
by madhan muthu 14 Sep '25

14 Sep '25

Currency of Science: The promise and perils of scientific publishing *Connect* - an IISc magazine There is also a movement within the scientific community that is calling for publishing in journals under professional societies (like the American Chemical Society) and other open journals (think Indian Academy of Sciences). Although, in many of these alternative publishing options, the matter of prestige remains unanswered. Thus, it becomes the proverbial question of who will bell the cat? To force a change, who would stand for a set of values that would likely be detrimental to a successful academic career? It is a tough ask and even tougher decision. One would think identifying the problem and finding solutions are right up the alley of scientists, but they, too, are bound by the same problems of money, job security, and career advancement that haunt the rest of the world. And the wheel keeps turning. A hamster wheel. https://connect.iisc.ac.in/2025/09/currency-of-science/ -- Madhan, M

UAE has its own AI engine
by Subbiah Arunachalam 10 Sep '25

Friends, UAE is the new kid in the block in AI, probably using Small Language Models. Here is a brief news item:* The UAE throws its hat in the ring with new open-source model. *The country unveiled 'K2 Think', a 32-billion-parameter reasoning model that claims <https://link.mail.beehiiv.com/ss/c/u001.DbzK6ussT05IJzzbg4YqOuLlWu2sss4wh-o…> to outperform much larger models in math and advanced problem-solving benchmarks. The open source model provides researchers with training code, datasets, and deployment tools, building on the UAE’s existing AI portfolio that includes models like Jais and Falcon. Please try it and tell us how it compares with DeepSeek, Z.ai, Perplexity, Claude, etc. Arun http://orcid.org/0000-0002-4398-4658 http://www.researcherid.com/rid/B-9925-2009

Questionable research practices are on the rise
by Subbiah Arunachalam 10 Sep '25

10 Sep '25

Friends, We have been hearing about paper mills, citation cartels, research misconduct and fraud in academic science publishing. But now comes the granddaddy of them all. Please see* https://peerreviewcongress.org/abstract/how-a-questionable-research-network… <https://peerreviewcongress.org/abstract/how-a-questionable-research-network…>*, a short presentation by Leslie D. McIntosh, Hélène Draux,Elizabeth Smee, and Cynthia Hudson Vitale. My colleague Muthu Madhan of OP Jindal Global University is looking at the latest NIRF data and has found a rapid increase in the number of papers over the past decade or so from several recently instituted private universities and is wondering how it is possible. He may come up with an answer soon. Arun http://orcid.org/0000-0002-4398-4658 http://www.researcherid.com/rid/B-9925-2009

[Reminder] Invitation to Eugene Garfield Birth Centenary Celebration
by Francis Jayakanth 10 Sep '25

10 Sep '25

Dear Members, Greetings from the Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru. Please join us in celebrating the birth centenary of Dr. Eugene Garfield (1925–2017) and his pioneering contributions to the world of scientific information. The event will be held on 16th September 2025. Eugene Garfield Birth Centenary Celebration 📅 Date: 16 September 2025 🕑 Time: 14:00–16:00 IST 🌐 Mode: Online This celebration will feature lectures from two experts in the field: 🎤Prof. Mike Thelwall (The University of Sheffield, UK): A leading voice on altmetrics, citation indicators, and the role of AI in academic assessment. 🎤Prof. Ton (Anthony) F.J. van Raan (Leiden University, Netherlands): A renowned pioneer in bibliometrics, quantitative science studies, and science mapping. Each lecture will be followed by an interactive Q&A session. More details at: https://dstcpriisc.org/eugene-garfield-birth-centenary-celebration/ 🔗Please express your interest by registering here: https://bit.ly/45SU5ns All are cordially invited.

Sixth International Conference on Science & Technology Metrics (STMet 2025) Physical/Virtual October 13-14, 2024 Macau Millennium College, Macau (Near Hong Kong) and also at Posts and Telecommunication Institute of Technology November 7-8, 2025 Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam https://www.socio.org.uk/stm Co-located with Springer Real-Time Intelligent Systems (https://www.socio.org.uk/rtis) Participants can attend either in Macau or Vietnam. Building metrics is the key to science and technology measurement and translating the measures to work better. The metric is not confined to drawing numbers and analysing. Selecting a metric depends on synthesising multiple directions and evidence-based data, producing scientific and technological evaluation benchmarks and standards, and implementing them with real data to mark a full-fledged system. Recently, we have witnessed the emergence of new metrics-based models that aim to reflect the growth of science and technology. The proposed Science and Technology Metrics (STMet 2025) conference addresses the issue of assessing various aspects of science and technology using multiple metrics, which can be best expressed through different approaches. In addition to the standard conference track and the Doctoral Symposium, STMetrics will host several workshops and tutorials related to the conference theme. The workshops offer participants a friendly and interactive atmosphere for presenti ng novel ideas and discussing the application of metrics in Science and Technology Systems. The tutorials aim to enable participants to familiarise themselves with the theoretical and practical aspects, as well as the application of metrics. The proposed conference includes invited talks, presentations, tutorials, workshops, and discussions. The STMet has tracks on specialized topics. The STMet addresses the themes below, but is not limited to them. The proposed conference includes invited talks, presentations, tutorials, workshops, and discussions.
