To Library Professions throughout India: Marshall Breeding is collecting data for the 2020 International Library Automation Perceptions survey conducted through Library Technology Guides. This survey is an important opportunity for Indian libraries to be well represented in this international report reflects the effectiveness of library automation systems. Please also distribute this request to any other related lists or forums to increase the number of responses from libraries in India. The survey includes libraries using both open source systems as well as proprietary products. This survey, now in its fourteenth annual iteration, provides an important opportunity for libraries to register their perceptions of the strategic automation products they use, organizations that provide these products, and the quality of support delivered. The survey also probes at considerations for migrating to new systems and the level of interest in open source products. While the numeric rating scales support the statistical results of the study, the narrative comments provide even more interesting insight into the current state of library automation satisfaction. Comments will be published in the survey results, though redacted to conceal any text that might identify the individual or organization responding. Please help your fellow libraries who might be in the process of evaluating library automation options by responding to the survey. Any information regarding vendor performance and product quality can be helpful when making strategic decisions regarding automation alternatives. A large number of responses strengthen the impact of the survey and the subsequent report. This survey also provides constructive criticism to the vendors involved to help them address any prevailing issues or concerns. These spaces have contributed to the development of a society. Through its interactions, the broader society also realizes the importance of these spaces. But these spaces are becoming vulnerable due to various reasons. The Jaffna Public Library in Sri Lanka, for instance, was deliberately burned down in 1981. This erasure of collective memory was and is still mourned. It becomes imperative to safeguard these spaces and its content for what it contains and what it means. What does happen to the knowledge captured in a collection like the Jaffna Public Library that is now lost forever? And what is the response of a wider Tamil diaspora to cultural losses like this? Public libraries come in all shapes and sizes, and with their own unique histories. Roja Muthiah, whose collections led to the formation of the Roja Muthiah Research Library in Chennai, has to be remembered for his extraordinary efforts in the preservation of thousands of rare volumes, all starting with scouring for ideas for his sign-board painting business. What did he think when he started collecting fifty years ago? And now in the digital world, how do we think we could build an archive or a special collection in a public library? Through the histories of two public libraries and the environments they foster, I plan to talk about the challenges and taking forward the collection building exercise. This should reflect the history of preservation and future of libraries. The role of a public library needs to be perceived just not for its content but also for the spirit in which it exists. *Bio:* Sundar Ganesan is currently the Director of the Roja Muthiah Research Library <http://rmrl.in/>, and has been at the library since its inception in 1994. Trained as an archivist, he has worked on a number of preservation projects with grants from the National Endowment for Humanities, Wellcome Institute for the History of Understanding Medicine, Mellon Foundation, Ford Foundation and the Endangered Archives Programme. Sundar has also been a consultant to various centres, including UNESCO, Centre for Studies in Social Sciences Calcutta, Kolkata, Madan Puraskar Pustakalaya, Nepal, and the Satyajit Ray Foundation, Kolkata. Many of the libraries and library professionals of the country and abroad are taking advantage of our expertise and practices. The Central Library is fully computerized, using state of the art Integrated Library Management System and successfully running the RFID system from over a decade. Users have the freedom to self-Check-in or Check-out, round the clock using its RFID system as it remains open round the clock. We have our own DSpace based Institutional Repository, and all our Theses have been digitized and made accessible through the IR/NDLI/WebOPAC/Discovery Service/Library App platform. Nature journals reveal open-access terms Spurred by the open-access (OA) initiative Plan S, publisher Springer Nature has announced how scientists can make their papers in its most selective titles free to read as soon as they are published. From 2021, the publisher will charge €9,500, US$11,390 or £8,290 to make a paper OA in Nature and 32 other journals that currently keep most of their articles behind paywalls and are financed by subscriptions. Mr. Pattanshetti's Demise

To All LIS Professionals I am very sorry to inform you that former Librarian of Bangalore University Library, Mr. C.K. Pattanashetti, passed away yesterday i.e on 22nd November 2020 due to massive heart attack. Mr. Pattanshetti, one of the most humble professional and a down to earth person held the position of heading the library during its most critical periods and also had shouldered the responsibility of teaching when there were no permanent teachers in the Department. Coming from Belgaum districts his father was a school teacher and had his Library Science diploma (PG) from Baroda and so Mr. Pattanshetti was a very fluent in Gujarati language. For a short period he served as Librarian of College of Education, Belgaum. He later completed his MLISc from Bangalore University and serviced the University library which was then spread in two campuses. Very knowledgeable person also served in the Dept. of Public Libraries associated with veterans like Sri G.M.Patil, former curator of Libraries Karnataka, Mr. N.D.Bagari, former State Librarian, Prof. P.K.Patil, Prof. K.S.Deshpande who headed the Bangalore University Library for a term.I was one of his close associate, and knew him closely since 1980s when I moved to Bangalore then to Bangalore University, in 1985. Mr. Pattashetti had lost his wife long ago, he is survived by his three sons all are well placed in life. On behalf all LIS Fraternity and on my personal behalf I convey our heartfelt condolences and pray all mighty to his to SOUL REST IN PEACE (RIP) and also our consolation to his family to bear this loss. Dear professional friends, LTC 2021 Pre-Conclave Lecture 2 on “Digital Libraries and Research Data Management” is round the corner! As science moves towards a data-intensive and collaborative approach, digital technologies have both strengthened the power and reach of data and raised new challenges for the research community. The emerging data-intensive research paradigm has been called the “fourth paradigm” of scientific method and encompasses all fields as it is imperative for researchers to be able to collect, analyze, share, and effectively manage and preserve research data. Scientists and institutions confront many challenges in their preservation for long term use while keeping up with the evolving data standards. Effectively sharing data while enforcing some restrictions, and overcoming obstacles to data sharing and data reuse is difficult. Inadequate data management processes in addition to lack of institutional policies and infrastructure are some of the critical issues. Academic/research libraries are considered to be most suitably placed to get involved in supporting their institutions in this endeavour of building appropriate cyber infrastructures involving all the stakeholders—researchers, funding agencies, scholarly communication systems, and others. Although libraries are aware of their potential role in research data management and have begun or at least considered data management services, not all libraries are appropriately positioned due to the different perceptions and needs related to data management at the institutional level, which vary with institutional capacities, boundaries, and policies Research Data Management has emerged as a special interest group consisting of diverse disciplinary groups—data scientists, scientists, and the library and information scientists. LTC 2021 on “eScience and Digital Libraries: Building Communities for Collaboration” purports to align different perceptions and perspectives and create a platform for conversations and collaborations. Dear Library Professionals: I deeply regret to inform you that one of our esteemed friends Shri G R Deshmukh, passed away on 7th November,2020 at Nagpur. He served at Central Soil and Water Conservation Research and Training Institute, ICAR, Dehradun for about two decades and shifted to National Bureau of Soil Survey and Land Use Planning, ICAR, Nagpur from where he retired as Chief Technical Officer (Library) during 2011. He was my colleague at Nagpur and took over charge of the Library and Documentation Unit after I shifted to RRI, Bengaluru. He was a wonderful person and an excellent library professional. With regards -- hrmohan Announcement on the lecture series ============================== Online introductory lectures on quantum computing from 6 November No previous knowledge of quantum physics is required to follow these open, free lectures on quantum computing A series of weekly lectures on the basics of quantum computing will be broadcast via webcast starting 6 November 2020 at 10.30 a.m. New lectures will be broadcast each Friday of the next seven weeks. The talks will focus on the practical aspects of quantum computing and are organised by CERN openlab and the CERN Quantum Technology Initiative. They will be given by Elias Fernandez-Combarro Alvarez, an associate professor in the Computer Science Department at the University of Oviedo in Spain since 2009 and a cooperation associate at CERN since earlier this year. Quantum computing is one the most promising new trends in information processing. This course introduces basic concepts of the quantum circuit model (qubits, gates and measures) and important quantum algorithms and protocols, including those that can be implemented with a few qubits (BB84, quantum teleportation, superdense coding, etc.), as well as those that require multi-qubit systems (Deutsch-Jozsa, Grover, Shor, etc.). Some of the most recent applications of quantum computing in the fields of optimisation and simulation will be addressed (with special emphasis on the use of quantum annealing, the quantum approximate optimisation algorithm and the variational quantum eigensolver) along with quantum machine learning (for instance, through the use of quantum support vector machines and quantum variational classifiers). Examples of how these techniques can be used in chemistry simulations and high-energy physics problems will also be provided. Beyond the practical aspects of quantum computing, the course will cover the implementation of algorithms in quantum simulators and actual quantum computers (such as the ones available through the IBM Quantum Experience and D-Wave Leap). No previous knowledge of quantum physics is required and only a good command of basic linear algebra is necessary. We want to make the industry aware that universities, schools, industries, and libraries worldwide are facing significant budget cuts for the next fiscal year as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, and that library subscription is an area that is being looked at for potential savings. To assist libraries and institutions in this possible financial crisis, we request that you support them by reducing prices in 2021. We greatly appreciate such generous gestures already extended by many publishers and vendors, and honestly expect a similar approach from the rest. The IATUL (International Association of University Libraries) Special Interest Group - Metrics and Research Impact (SIG-MaRI) launched a self-paced professional development program, IATUL Research Impact Things ( https://iatulimpactthings.info/) in Oct 2020. SIG-MaRI invites you to review, reuse, and share this with your colleagues, available openly under a Creative Commons Attribution ShareAlike license. In the last few years, we saw libraries across the world take on key roles in driving research initiatives, leading to the creation of research support positions and the role of liaison librarians also shifting. The IATUL SIG-MaRI recognized the lack of formal training and development programs to upskill staff transitioning into research support roles and developed the tool to help fill this gap. IATUL member institution the University of New South Wales (UNSW) Library launched the 10 Research Impact Things in 2019 which aimed to develop foundational skills in research impact across the Library based on the bibliometric capabilities framework. The IATUL SIG-MaRI formed a project team led by Curtin University Library, adapted and significantly revised the UNSW program for the broader IATUL members and beyond as a self-paced training and development tool.
