Department of Library and Information Science, Aligarh Muslim University, Under the UGC-Special Assistance Programme (SAP DRS-I) is going to organize a National Conference on “Knowledge Management in Libraries and Information Centers (KMLIC-2015)” on 18th – 19th March, 2015. *Introduction* Knowledge Management (KM) is an influential tool for promoting uniqueness, realizing and re-engineering the various aspects of day-to-day activities of an organization. Knowledge Management is a new research area which is developing very rapidly. In the current knowledge economy, the survival of organization depends on how good it manages the knowledge to achieve sustainable competitive advantage. Information professionals should also evolve and adopt the knowledge environment by implementing knowledge management in their field. Knowledge management represents an opportunity by entrusting new roles and responsibilities for libraries and LIS professionals. LIS professionals have to gain new skills and involve themselves effectively in knowledge management practices to become relevant to their organisations to enable them to have a competitive edge for employment to people from other industries. The ultimate purpose of KM is to increase the effectiveness and sustainability of organizations, particularly in case of libraries and information centers. Although the concept of KM originated in the business field, but in practice it has now spread to the non-profit sector as well. Libraries as non-profit making organisations, improve their communication both horizontally and vertically thus promoting a sharing culture. It is for the same implications that the conference is being organised to pool up both the knowledge and experiences of the professionals working in the areas of KM and discuss the tools of managing the assets of knowledge. The conference is enveloping mostly on the various facets of Knowledge Management and its application in Libraries and Information Centers, thrived particularly with the following objectives: - To create awareness and provide a platform for exchange of ideas concerning tacit and explicit knowledge - To share knowledge and skills among academicians/ LIS professionals/ other knowledge based professionals working in private and public sector. - To understand knowledge management tools and their usage in KM initiatives. - To provide an opportunity to share innovative ideas and plans in the areas of KM. - To identify suitable initiatives in implementing KM in the library and information centers. *About AMU* Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), established in 1920, A.M.U. is one of the oldest central government funded universities in India. It was evolved out of the Mohammedan Anglo-Oriental College (MAO College), which was set up by the great visionary and social reformer, Sir Syed Ahmad Khan in 1877. From its very inception, it has kept its door open to the members of all communities and from all corners of the country and the world. It occupies a unique position amongst universities and institutions of higher learning in the country. The main campus of AMU is located in the city of Aligarh. Quite recently, the University has been ranked among the best educational institutions in India. According to Times Higher Education Asia Ranking 2014, AMU has ranked 3rd among all Universities in India. It Ranked 50th among top 100 institutions of higher learning in BRICS grouping-2014 and 5th in The Week-Hansa Research (Best Universities Survey) 2014. *About Department* The foundation of the Department of Library Science was laid way back in 1950-51 with the introduction of a 'Certificate Course in Library Science,' by the then University Librarian, (Late) Padmashree Prof. S. Bashiruddin, who later on introduced a full time ‘Bachelor of Library Science' course in 1958-59 with full time Lecturers for the first time in the country. Subsequently, 'Master of Library Science' was introduced in1970-71 and Ph.D in 1990-91. A special feature of the revised syllabi is the emphasis on Information Technology and hands-on training on a number of library automation software packages. A well-equipped computer lab supports the revised syllabi with Internet facility. The seminar library of the department is the first fully automated library of the university. The teachers of the department have also received training in Information Technology within the country and also abroad. Presently the department is headed by the chairman Prof. Shabahat Husain, who has been recently conferred with the Prof. S.P Narang Research Promotion Award by Indian Association of Teachers of Library and Information Science (IATLIS). The department has had the distinction of completing a number of DST and UGC major research projects by designing and developing L.I.S. As a Dean, Faculty of Social Sciences, Prof Shabahat Husain developed ‘Social Science Cyber Library’(*www.socsccybraryamu.ac.in <http://www.socsccybraryamu.ac.in>*), inaugurated by His Excellency Shri Pranab Mukherjee on 27.12.2013 as a part of inaugural programme of XXXVII Social Science Congress held from 27th to 31st December 2013. The Social Science Cyber Library which is first of its kind in the whole world is being used in 63 countries so far. Under the UGC’s Programme, the Department was awarded Special Assistance Programme SAP (DRS-I) in the financial year 2013-2014 for five years. The theme of the project is Knowledge Management with Prof.Shabahat Husain as its Coordinator and Dr. Naushad Ali.P.M as its Dy. Coordinator. UNESCO-UNAOC MILID Yearbook 2015: Call for Papers

Dear Professional Colleagues, Proposals are now being sought for articles to be published in the 2015 Yearbook on media and information literacy and intercultural dialogue. The MILID Yearbook is a peer reviewed academic publication and a joint initiative of the UNESCO-UNAOC University Cooperation Programme on Media and Information Literacy and Intercultural Dialogue. The cooperation programme was launched in 2011 within the framework of the UNESCO university twinning programme (UNITWIN). The MILID university network now consists of 14 universities from all regions of the world. MILID Yearbook 2013 and 2014 published in cooperation with the Nordic Information Centre for Media and Communication Research (NORDICOM). The objectives of the Yearbook are to: · Strengthen and deepen the knowledge concerning MILID on global, regional and national levels including in the frame on human rights and democracy · Widen and deepen the knowledge concerning MILID · Widen and deepen the collaboration and exchange between the partner universities on media and information literacy · Visualize and stimulate research and practices within as well as outside the UNITWIN Network in the field of MILID while promoting a more holistic perspective The theme of the 2015 Yearbook is, *“Media and Information Literacy: Post-2015 Sustainable Development Goals.”* In the year 2000, governments and development partners all over the world agreed on global eight development targets called the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). 2015 is a pivotal year as it marks the end of the period during which the MDGs are to be reached and the year in which new global development targets are to be set. These new targets are referred to as the Post 2015 Sustainable Development Goals. This process is in its highest gear with ongoing debates and consultative meetings/initiatives globally both online and offline. While much progress has been made, achievement of the MDGs has been mixed across counties. *Key Sub-themes:* a. Governance, citizenship and freedom of expression; b. Access to information and knowledge for all citizens; c. Development of media, libraries, Internet and other information providers; d. Education, teaching, and learning – including professional development; e. Linguistic and cultural diversity as well as intercultural and interfaith dialogue; f. Women, children and youth, persons with disabilities and other marginalised social groups; g. Health and wellness; h. Business, industry, employment and sustainable economic development; i. Agriculture, farming, wildlife protection, forestry and natural resources conservation as well as other areas. All articles submitted must be linked to one of the sub-themes above. Special attention should be given to the intercultural dimensions of these areas. Papers should engage the reader to understand media and information literacy beyond their home country or professional area of competence. The focus of the papers should be on the theme “Media and Information Literacy: Post-2015 Sustainable Development Goals.” All papers must demonstrate a connection with at least three of the following components: 1. Yearbook theme and sub-themes 2. Global Alliance for Partnership on MIL (GAPMIL) Framework and Plan of Action 3. Content includes research findings, theories, or reflects learned experience and best practices in either application of MIL, teaching or curriculum design 4. Topic is of global interest and lends to increase visibility for the MILID Yearbook 5. Author’s academic or professional leadership in the field The Yearbook will contain articles from MILID university network (called partners or member universities) as well as experts or practitioners outside of the network. Equal value is placed on both groups. The centrality of information and communications to development is irrefutable. The MILID Yearbook will provide a case for media and information literacy (MIL) as a tool for open and inclusive sustainable development. The data sets include: International Financial Statistics, Balance of Payment Statistics, Government Finance Statistics, and Direction of Trade Statistics. IMF will run both systems (the old eLibrary and the new dissemination system) in parallel for three months to help transition users to the new platform. New Millennium LIS Professionals National Seminar on Transforming UNIVERSITY Libraries: JNU Leading the way Date: January 28, 2015 at 9:00 A.M Venue: Auditorium-I, Convention Centre, JNU Supported by Concept Note: The role of university library systems over a decade has undergone varied diverse changes. The university libraries have had to compete with the “world wide web” and IT savvy users to get the eyeball attention. In the University Library Systems, JNU is leading the way with modern, advanced services available round the clock not in campus but anywhere, anytime through the virtual world. The National Seminar intends to showcase and launch the services and tools recently initiated in the university library as a role model. In this series it includes New JNU Library website; Web Scale Discovery Solution; Athens Cloud based Access Gateway and Launch of Website of ETD 2015: 18th International Symposium on Electronic Theses and Dissertations. i. The new JNU Library website has been designed on a open source and with attractive appearance, updated content, more functionality and usability with modern library world services integration. ii. The JNU Library through its dynamic design of “single search box” of Discovery Services intends to bring patrons back, to the library, as their first point of call for their information needs. The traditional tools provided by the library to search various library databases, catalogues and other electronic resources, all of which are in different silos and have totally uncommon characteristics leading to underutilized usage of library resources, among other challenges. Similarly, the Athens cloud solution adopted by JNU will ensure that all the patrons of JNU can now have access to virtually every subscribed information resource on their finger tips from the comfort of their homes or any other part of the world. iii. JNU library will be organising ETD 2015: 18th International Symposium on Electronic Theses and Dissertations, which is an international symposium and a platform for gathering of current and future researchers and practitioners in the area of Electronic Theses and Dissertations. This event will be held in the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) Campus, New Delhi, India during 4th - 6th November 2015 with a theme “Evolving Genre of ETDs for Knowledge Discovery”.
