Koha Receives Massive Support from EBSCO for Enhancements to Its Web-Based, Open-Source ILS

Together, the two are working to provide a viable web-based, open source ILS for libraries of all types. Koha libraries reached out to EBSCO for support of some important projects, and EBSCO agreed to partner to accomplish the following for Koha: - Strategic upgrade of of Koha’s core full-text search engine technology to ElasticSearch; ensuring long-term viability - Increased functionality and accuracy of facets - Development of a browse function (author, title, subject, call number) - MARC to RDF crosswalk enhancing capability of linking to online data repositories (linked data) - Greater flexibility in ingesting metadata schemes beyond MARC21 - Improved speed - Enhanced patron functionality API access The financial support from EBSCO will be provided via the Koha Gruppo Italiano founded by the American Academy in Rome, American University of Rome, and the Pontificia Università della Santa Croce which will be assisted in this development and integration by key Koha contributors ByWater Solutions, Catalyst IT, and Cineca. In keeping with open source tradition, these enhancements to Koha are truly open source and will be available for others to use, modify, and re-distribute. TOPIC: Big Data and Analytics: Applications in LIS SPEAKER: Suvarsha Minj PLACE: Sarada Ranganathan Endowment for Library Science (SRELS) 702, 'Upstairs', 42nd Cross, III Block Rajajinagar, Bangalore - 560 010 DATE & TIME: Friday Feb 13, 2015 at 6.15 p.m. Summary: Historically Big data has been around for several decades - in fact, in some versions it predates even the Internet and the Web. But ‘Big Data’ has become, along with ‘Analytics’ the all ubiquitous buzzwords only in the more recent past. Also, like the legendary story of the elephant and the blind men, there are several versions of what exactly they are, of their usefulness and application. So how do we separate out the facts from fiction? This talk looks at the concepts and key terms associated with ‘Big Data' and 'Analytics’, the technologies that have risen to deal with them and some examples of practical applications in business and industry. Finally, the talk considers Big Data and Analytics from the perspective of Library and Information Science, understanding some of the experiments carried out and future areas of possible applications. It also briefly covers if the skills of library and information professional can be relevant in this new domain. After all, loosely speaking, are we not the managers of organized data (books/information/knowledge) in the per big-data world? Profile: Suvarsha Minj works as Knowledge Curator in a start-up Kaybus Inc. - a Enterprise SaaS based Knowledge Automation Company. The company works transforming enterprise information into knowledge by personalizing it to individual needs in context using Big Data technologies. In the past, she has worked on several projects at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore. She was part of the SALIS (Software and Licensing Information System) at ERNET and the project SJPI (Scientific Journal Publishing in India) using Open Journal Systems (OJS) at NCSI. More recently, she has led in porting the 100-year-old journal, The Journal of the Indian Institute of Science into OJS, and digitize and make available on an Archive Management System all the publications - since it’s inception in 1974 - of the Center for Sustainable Technologies, IISc. She has published some national and international papers based on her work. She has also worked in the corporate sector in several organisations like Yahoo, Hewlett Packard (HP) and General Electric (GE) in various capacities and is an alumnus of NCSI-Net. In collaboration with the global library community, Library Voices aims to capture stories from academic librarians around the world, focusing on what their library roles entail, how they are changing, and to demonstrate the positive and considerable contribution libraries are making to the research community, particularly those in developing regions. This output will primarily be a collection of short videos, but will also include audio recordings, images, and text-based accounts. How do you monitor usage of your collection? 5. Would you say your role as a librarian is changing? If so, how? Options for submitting your story Video guidelines Videos should be no more than 5 minutes in length. Please clearly introduce yourself, your role, and the library you work in at the beginning of your recording. - A recording on a mobile device or phone, such as an iPad, iPhone, or Galaxy is of a sufficient quality. - Videos should be provided in one of the following formats: .mp4, .mov, .mpg - Remember to make your recording holding your device in the landscape position (sideways) rather than portrait (upright) - Think about the setting: do you want to be in a static position, or would you like the guide the viewer around your library? - Think about location: aim to record the video in a location that is relevant to the subject matter, ideally in the library environment. - Think about framing: distance from the camera and positioning in the frame - Think about background and costume: Try not to have a mess in the background or wear unprofessional/stripy clothing - Think about lighting: Lighting directly onto the speaker, not behind or from the side - Think about the audio: Quiet room to minimise background noise; close enough to the camera to pick up the audio clearly if the microphone is built into the camera Audio guidelines Audio recordings should be no longer than 5 minutes in length.
