UNIVERSITY OF KERALA NOTIFIES THE POST OF UNIVERSITY LIBRARIAN VACANT SINCE 1989 One of the first 16 Universities in India, the University of Kerala was founded as the University of Travancore in the erstwhile princely state of Travancore in 1937 the Maharajah of Travancore, Sri Chithira Thirunal Balarama Varma who was also the first Chancellor of the University. He even made an unsuccessful attempt to invite Albert Einstein to be the first Vice-Chancellor. later Sir C. P Ramaswamy Ayyar, the then Diwan of the State was appointed as the first Vice-Chancellor. The University was modelled after the best Universities of the United Kingdom, and even today retains some of these features. The University had campuses located in three different parts of the State. At present, the University has sixteen faculties and forty one departments of teaching and research in addition to study centres and other departments. The quality of the education and research at the university can be compared to any university world wide even though the ranking systems, which scan through the surface, have never noticed it. University Departments like Computational Biology and Bioinformatics are unique examples, which show how consistent and concerted efforts in an Indian University can lead to an academically fruitful exercise worthy of emulation in universities worldwide and can win international acclaim for Indian research work. The Department attracts funding of over 110 millions from international agencies and also students from all over the world University of Kerala has one of the few best university libraries in India and in its scientific organization is second only to Madras University Library which was set by Dr. S. R Ranganathan, the Father of Library Science. In its initial phase this library was headed by one of the best academicians in the university, Prof. KA Isaac, whom all the faculty and students considered, irrespective of their specialization, the best teacher and guide. The physical infrastructure Prof Isaac has envisioned is future proof. Post of University Librarian remains vacant since Prof. Isaac left in 1989. University has now advertised the post of University Librarian the top level post which is to manage invluable knowledge and information resources and related infrastructures worth above Rs. 1000 crore at current rates. Keep out of bogus journals, SPPU tells researchers
by Siva Shankar Kimidi 19 Jul '15

19 Jul '15

Dear Moderator kindly post this: Keep out of bogus journals, SPPU tells researchers *Puts out a list of 700 publications; names them 'predatory'* Worry about the spawning of research journals, compromising on ethical vetting of submissions, has gripped the world of academia as never before. Studies show that questionable journals are being particularly accessed by authors from developing countries, including India. The Union Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) has tasked the three-member committee set up to review the nation's academic performance to also prepare national guidelines for ethical research publications. But, stealing a march over other varsities in this process, Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) has warned its research scholars to steer clear of at least 700 predatory journals and publishers, to start with. The varsity is also working on identifying more such journals locally and across different faculties. for more kindly click on the below link. Fwd: Science Europe proposes ‘diamond engagement’ open access plan
by Subbiah Arunachalam 15 Jul '15

15 Jul '15

Friends: Europe is planning to go open the 'arXiv' way, i.e. making all publications be first released as preprints in a repository and interlinking all such repositories. There is one difference: Unlike arXiv, the European effort would like authors to deposit their papers after they incorporate suggestions by the referees. This is what we should be doing in India. The community of academic and research librarians may take the lead. Regards. Arun Science Europe proposes ‘diamond engagement’ open access plan 14 July 2015Emma Stoye <http://www.rsc.org/chemistryworld/more/?author=98> An association of European funding organisations – Science Europe <http://www.scienceeurope.org/> – has proposed improving open access for European research by encouraging researchers to share their work via publically funded digital data repositories. In an opinion paper <http://www.scienceeurope.org/urls/socialopen>, Science Europe’s scientific committee for the social sciences points out that researchers can legally deposit accepted versions of papers (after they have been peer reviewed but before they have been edited and formatted for publication by a journal) into repositories hosted by university libraries or research institutes. Research could then be made available to the public in the form of ‘digital drafts’, regardless of whether the eventual publication ends up being open access. Through a joint effort between policymakers and research institutions that it calls ‘diamond engagement’ the committee says these practices could ‘help change the culture of academic publication where it is to be expected that first publication of research will be in OA digital repositories’. Their proposal includes three key recommendations: the establishment of open access partnerships between stakeholders such as universities, researchers, libraries and institutional publishers; the standardisation of policies across Europe to make sure data repositories fit in with the requirements of researchers; and the development of systems to incentivise the use of these repositories. ‘The scientific committee would like to encourage research funders, managers of digital repositories, researchers and end users of research to combine forces to foster a culture that aims to ensure that all research outputs are available in an open, traceable and interoperable manner,’ the paper says. They say these activities can exist in parallel with publishing practices such as gold open access, and suggest their plan could be carried out using existing initiatives such as OpenAIRE <http://www.rsc.org/chemistryworld/2015/07/OpenAIRE>, a network that links open access data repositories across Europe. http://www.rsc.org/chemistryworld/2015/07/science-europe-open-access-diamon… Arun http://orcid.org/0000-0002-4398-4658 http://www.researcherid.com/rid/B-9925-2009 -- This message has been scanned for viruses and dangerous content by MailScanner, and is believed to be clean.
