Since then I have undertaken a number of other such interviews, and with each interview the allegations have tended to become more worrying — e.g. that the publisher is levying article-processing charges but not actually sending papers out for review, that it is publishing junk science, that it is claiming to be a member of a publishing organisation when in reality it is not a member, that it is deliberately choosing journal titles that are the same, or very similar, to those of prestigious journals (or even directly cloning titles) in order to fool researchers into submitting papers to it etc. etc. The number of predatory publishers continues to grow year by year, and yet far too little is still being done to address the issue. Discussion of the problem invariably focuses on the publishers. But in order to practise their trade predatory publishers depend on the co-operation of researchers, not least because they have to persuade a sufficient number to sit on their editorial boards in order to have any credibility. Without an editorial board a journal will struggle to attract many submissions. Is it time to approach the problem from a different direction? Populating a repository

Friends: MIT Faculty Open Access Policy was adopted on 18 March 2009 by unanimous vote by the faculty. Please see < http://libraries.mit.edu/scholarly/mit-open-access/open-access-at-mit/mit-o… >. The latest available statistics (as on 2 September 2015) says that only 43% of papers published since the adoption of the policy are now being shared through the Open Access Articles Collection <http://dspace.mit.edu/handle/1721.1/49433> in Dspace@MIT. As of the end of July 2015, downloads of the 17,400 articles <http://dspace.mit.edu/handle/1721.1/49433> deposited in relation to the Policy topped 3.3 million, with over 83,500 downloads during July. A large number of these downloads are from India, but there is only anecdotal evidence. The point to note is in spite of a policy adopted with a unanimous vote by the faculty only 43% of papers are deposited in the repository. That shows the importance of constant persuasion and outreach by repository managers (and librarians). Dr Raj Hirwani and colleagues are doing exactly that in India to persuade colleagues in the laboratories of CSIR, DST and DBT. That is what librarians like Murari Tapaswi (now retired) and Satya have done at NIO. That is what Muthu Madhan had done at both NIT-R and ICRISAT. These are only a few among many. Preserving web resources

Friends: Our librarians collect, preserve and curate a variety of print materials - journals, books, reports, theses, libraries of eminent individuals including their lab notebooks, drawings and correspondence and so on. They also preserve audio and video recordings, films, photographs, etc. But what about the stuff in the web and social media? A seminar at the University of Michigan plans to look at this important question. Here is an excerpt from a note I received: "While research in almost all disciplines increasingly relies on evidence gleaned from websites, social media platforms, and other online resources, we are still just figuring out how to preserve web materials for future use. As instructors and scholars embrace these primary sources and discover new and innovative ways to interact with web data, their efforts are aligned--knowingly or not--with those of developers and curators. Web Archives 2015 brings together developers, curators, and researchers to explore the following questions: How do collecting policies and appraisal decisions shape web archives? How can web archives be effectively integrated with classroom instruction and academic discourse in general? How do available resources and technologies influence the extent and success of web captures? How do scholars want to access and interact with web archives? How can individual scholars ensure that the materials that they need will be available both for their research and for documenting their work? What tools can optimize the use and reuse of archived websites and online materials? What measures of confidence does the academic community have in the use of archived websites for research? Pro bono spotlight: Attorneys needed for 2015-16 Lawyers in Libraries Monday, September 7, 11:15 AM EDT By Kathy Para, The JBA Pro Bono Committee Chair In the fall of 2013, libraries across Florida joined forces with legal services staff and pro bono attorneys to bring legal guidance to library patrons. The project continues in Northeast Florida and has expanded. There is now a dire need of pro bono attorneys to present information in a broad range of substantive areas in one-hour group sessions. The “Lawyers in Libraries” project was launched by Florida Legal Services in collaboration with the The Florida Bar Foundation One Campaign, the Standing Committee on Pro Bono Legal Services of The Florida Bar, the Florida Pro Bono Coordinators Association, the Florida Library Association and the Division of Library and Information Services of the State of Florida. In today’s technologically driven world, many low-income families rely on public libraries to access the Internet free of charge, as well as to obtain information for numerous services. Many patrons turn to librarians for legal information and research resources. A librarian may be the first person to whom someone facing a legal problem turns. Realizing the level on which our low-income residents, in particular, rely on libraries for information, the “Lawyers in Libraries” project was born. The group information sessions take two forms: Online Free Legal Resources and Topics in the Law. An attorney who presents the “Online Free Legal Resources” session, is provided with an already-developed PowerPoint presentation and a handout for attendees. The attorney, with the help of the PowerPoint, describes the resources available on legal websites such asfloridabar.org, floridalawhelp.org <http://floridalawhelp.org/> and flcourts.org <http://flcourts.org/>. The handout provides information on these and other websites and how to access local legal organizations for help. The pro bono attorney does not need expertise to present this topic. All materials are provided. An attorney who conducts a one-hour “Topics in the Law” group presentation, designs a 45-minute presentation in a specific area (PowerPoint not required). The attorney allows time to address questions, keeping the entire session to one hour. Library branch managers request topics such as dissolution of marriage, landlord/tenant, employment, income tax, foreclosure, bankruptcy and small claims. Attorneys sign up for topics and dates that are convenient for them. These events are free and open to the public.
