Dear All, It gives me immense pleasure to inform you that a Three-day Intensive Workshop on Personality Development and Communication Skill was held at the University during 23-25 July and 10-12 September 2015 (repeat programme). It was organized jointly by IASLIC and Visva-Bharati Library Network for the benefit of the staff at the Library Network. The first two days were devoted to Written Communication (e-mail, texting, and other writing tips; e-mail etiquettes, five keys for effective writing, styles of clarity, strategy to cope with changes, ways to success) and Oral Communication (definition, types, barrier, how to develop positive attitude, how to get self-motivation, how to live with joy, how to follow leader and how to lead, storytelling for developing listening skill instead of mere hearing). Besides her presentations, the sessions contained interaction, painting, playing, acting, home work by the participants. User Awareness Programme on UGC INFONET Digital Library Consortium at Visva-Bharati

Dear All, It gives me immense pleasure to inform you that a two-day User Awareness Programme on Access to E-resources under UGC INFONET Digital Library Consortium was organized by Visva-Bharati Library Network at Central Library during 24 -25 August 2015, in collaboration with INFLIBNET Centre, Ahmedabad to promote the usage of e-resources as well as to provide a platform for discussion on issues related to e-resources. The user awareness programme was attended by 91 participants (33 Faculty, 14 Library Professionals and 44 Research Scholars). Nine aggregators/publishers presented their products. It was conducted in 13 technical sessions. The programme was inaugurated by Hon’ble Vice - Chancellor, Prof. Sushanta Dattagupta by lighting the lamp along with Dr. Jagdish Arora, Director, INFLIBNET, and Dr. V. K. Thomas, University Librarian. Prof. Sushanta Dattagupta, Vice-Chancellor, in his inaugural speech talked about the complex and widespread nature of VB libraries in Santinikeatn, Sriniketan and Kolkata (Granthana Vibhaga) and networking for better delivery of resources. Dr. Jagdish Arora drew a brief sketch of INFLIBNET. He highlighted existing and new ventures like ShodhGanga, ShodhGangotri, e-PG Pathshala, e-Acharya, OJAS, Institutional Repository, Vidwan, Soul cloud version etc. The valedictory function presided over by Prof. Swapan Kumar Datta, Pro Vice-Chancellor. Public libraries help children learn coding

Getting the turtle to move across the screen required her to break down big complex problems into small sequential steps. In other words, the nine-year-old girl was learning to code. She was one of about a dozen elementary school children gathered at a class called “coder time” for elementary and middle school kids. “Historically we’re the place that offers opportunities,” said children’s librarian Joanna Fabicon, who started the project. “I named it coder time because I would love coding to be as ubiquitous in libraries as story time." Libraries – the lands of hushed voices and dusty stacks – are transforming into computer science hubs for children. A new report by the Pew Research Center, “Libraries at the Crossroads <http://www.pewinternet.org/2015/09/15/libraries-at-the-crossroads/>,” finds that libraries are responding to the public demand for skills like programming and technology literacy, which are becoming increasingly important in the workplace. In the next five years, there will be a million more jobs than students <https://code.org/stats> nationwide. Coder Time began at the L.A.'s central library with a grant from the Eureka leadership program <http://eurekaleadership.org/>. To reach more children, Fabicon formed a partnership with the afterschool program L.A.’s Best, which rolled out the curriculum to 160 children at eight LAUSD schools. Technology advocates said these kinds of programs allow kids to become creators, rather than just consumers of media. When he first offered coding classes to kids, more than 200 signed up. “I don’t know if you’ve ever been in a 600 square foot room with 15 sweaty 12-year-olds,” he laughed. “But it quickly got very unpleasant and crowded.” According to Stone that’s a good problem to have, because the library helps put coding skills into the hands of kids who might otherwise not get them. There is no shortage of coding and game development camps, he said, “but they often cost $700 to $2,000 for a week, which puts it out of reach for a lot of families.” Libraries may also lower the bar for entry when it comes to gender and ethnicity. Friends: The mass migration from the Middle East and East Africa and the deaths of thousands of people are truly tragic. Luckily, several countries have come forward to take in many of those migrants. But for those still in refugee camps life continues to be uncertain. They need hope. They need to learn to adapt to their new surroundings. There are people ready to help them. One of them is a librarian called Mary Jones. I do not know if she was a librarian before. But now she is one of the finest. The Jungle library she set up is now talked about the world over. What did Mary Jones do? She set up a basic library in ramshackle shed put up at a refugee camp in Calais in northern France. What a great library it is! What kind of services she has thought of for the library all within a month!
