Google Scholar, Scopus and Web of Science
by Padmanabha Vyasamoorthy 08 Jul '16

08 Jul '16

From: Researchbuzz Interesting: Do Google Scholar, Scopus and the Web of Science speak your language? <http://www.harzing.com/publications/white-papers/do-google-scholar-scopus-a…>"Prior research has shown that Google Scholar has a more comprehensive coverage than Scopus or the Web of Science, especially for scholars in the Social Sciences and Humanities. Most recently, Harzing & Alakangas (2016) showed that, on average, the Web of Science had only 23% of the citations of Google Scholar for the Social Sciences and only 7% for the Humanities. For Scopus the respective figures were only slightly better at 30% and 11%. However, all of the academics in this sample were Associate or Full Professors employed at the University of Melbourne, an Anglophone university that is ranked number one in Australia and ranked 22 worldwide in the Times Higher Education ranking for the Social Sciences. Virtually all of the academics’ publications were in English." Princeton goes open access. http://theconversation.com/princeton-goes-open-access-to-stop-staff-handing… Many other universities and funding agencies around the world have gone open access already. When will Indian universities adopt full (Green) open access? Fwd: A new development at Bioline
by Subbiah Arunachalam 07 Jul '16

07 Jul '16

Friends: The Bioline group, publishers of many open access journals from the developing world, is conducting a survey with a view to making their service better. Please circulate the letter among the researchers in your institutions. Thanks and best wishes. Subbiah Arunachalam ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Barbara Kirsop <barbarakirsop(a)gmail.com> Date: Wed, Jul 6, 2016 at 9:07 PM Subject: A new development at Bioline To: Subbiah Arunachalam <subbiah.arunachalam(a)gmail.com> and others Cc: Dora Canhos <dora(a)cria.org.br>, Sidnei Souza <sidnei(a)cria.org.br> Dear All. I think you will be interested to learn that Bioline International, the platform supporting the global distribution of research published in developing countries, is very heavily used, and Bioline management in Brazil and Toronto want to find out who all these users are and why they find articles available from the site so valuable. So we have just launched a brief survey to find some answers to these questions. We want to make Bioline as useful as possible to the research community and hope users will take part in this exercise. The survey, developed by CRIA, is very short to complete, so if you have contacts with users or potential users, please let them know about this development. Maybe we shall find out if users are mainly from the developing world, or from the rest of the research community who are discovering new and important research for the first time. Maybe we shall learn how a particular article led to the completion of a project and a publication? Maybe a single article has led to the formation of new research contacts and subsequent partnerships. Maybe we shall learn how Open Access to this resource has been important in providing new opportunities for low budget organisations, since BI is entirely OA. Maybe we shall learn that Bioline is an easy-to-use resource. Maybe a single article provided the *eureka* key to solving a problem. Maybe it led to career development? We shall analyse the results of the survey and report our findings, which may be of value to other communities. Just link to the Bioline site at http://www.bioline.org.br/ to see the Survey link, and from the Survey form you can link to the Results. Kind regards, The Bioline Team -- Arun http://orcid.org/0000-0002-4398-4658 http://www.researcherid.com/rid/B-9925-2009

Koha Backup with Script
by DP Tripathi 07 Jul '16

07 Jul '16

Dear All, Good Morning! I just tried to write one script to take the backup for Koha users by running this script. This backup script will take the backup, zip it and then keep the backup in /home folder of Lubuntu/Ubuntu. Script assumes that your database name is koha_library. If not, then change the database name in script and then use it. You can download this script from the following link. www.dptripathi.in/download/backup.sh How to use this? First Step: Download the script and keep at the location from where you can run this script. (For example - Desktop) Second Step: Now, open terminal preferably by pressing (CTRL+ALT+T) together. Third Step: Then, assign permission to the script with the following command. chmod +x backup.sh Forth Step: Login as root user and execute the script 1. Enter sudo su command and login as root user 2. Then type sh backup.sh command (Ensure you are executing the script from the same location where you have kept the backup.sh file) 3. It will ask the mysql database password. Type and press Enter. It will take the backup of your koha mysql database, zip it and save in /home folder. Now, copy the backup, save it to your hard drive or safe location. Advantages: 1. You will not have to remember the command every time to take the back up, if you are taking from terminal. 2. It will zip your backup and reduce the file size. 3. You can run this script everyday from the same location. It will overwrite the backup file and keep the fresh backup. Enjoy!!!! Important Note: Please test it before you use it at your system.
