Dear all, Recent few advertisements is an alarm for Not library professionals but existence of Libraries itself in future. IIIT Allahabad and IIT Kanpur appointing Assistant Registrar <http://www.iitk.ac.in/new/data/recruitment/Advt_No_1_2018/Advt-No-1-2018-Fi…> and Dy. Registrar <https://www.iiita.ac.in/downloads/announcements/uploads/Rec295.pdf> in libraries and made library science related qualifications under essential or desirable. Seems the perception of libraries and librarian’s has been changed drastically in academic community/society the reasons may be as follows: 1. Some of the LIS professionals could not serve the community better. 2. Some of the LIS professionals attitude/behavior was totally against the ethics and irritable to users of library? 3. Some of the professionals enjoyed highly paid salary without doing nothing and exploited their subordinates/resources/facility given to them. 4. Many could not upgrade their libraries and themselves as per the current trend and information seeking behavior of users. 5. Top leaders/experts could not appoint suitable candidates for the post and many cases where they might have appointed their incapable near and dears. 6. Rise of electronic media/resources which crossed the four walls of the libraries and reached in the hands of users without any assistance from LIS professionals/Libraries. Apart from other their may be many wrong/correct perception about the libraries because of which i can see peoples are now discussing the relevance of libraries itself rather than librarians. This is not an alarm for non-teaching library professionals but for teaching LIS professionals (Professor’s) too because if their is no library than their is no department of libraries too? We are happy announce the SALIS 2018: National Conference on Role of Libraries in Creating a Knowledge Society jointly organized by the Dept of Library and Information Science , Alagappa University, Karaikudi, Tamil Nadu and Society for the Advancement of Library and Information Science (SALIS) on 7th & 8th September, 2018 at Alagappa University, Karaikudi. About the Conference The “Knowledge Society (KS)” and “knowledge economy” terms were first used by Drucker in 1969 and he mentioned that knowledge will be the main element for economies. A knowledge society is one that generates, processes, disseminates, shares and uses the information and knowledge for the benefit of the members of the society to improve their living conditions. In such a society, information and the knowledge are the key assets or intellectual capitals which are the powerful producer of wealth than capital, land etc. The important indicators of a KS are literacy rate and quality education, social and economic development, equal access to information resources and technology, GDP, investment on R&D and quality publications. Libraries also play an important role in acquiring the knowledge, organizing, disseminating, sharing it to the people in the society and preserving it for the future generation. Libraries, as gateways to knowledge and culture, play a vital role in transforming the society into a knowledge society by providing required resources and knowledge- based services to the citizens for their life-long learning, education, research, new ideas, innovation and opportunities. Libraries provides need-based and customized knowledge services to all in the society - children, school, college and university students, researchers, adults, elders, professionals, traders, business people, workers and others primarily to make them ‘better informed citizens’ in the society and thereby increase their social and economic conditions. Librarians play a key role in this process of transforming the society into a knowledge society to empower the citizens. This conference will give an opportunity to the participants to share their ideas and knowledge which will in turn help to contribute for making knowledge society. Janeway is a journal management system developed by the Centre for Technology and Publishing at Birkbeck, University of London. Janeway is a full platform allowing submission, review, editing and production of scholarly articles before then processing them for display. Janeway has all of the standard features you would expect of a Scholarly Communications platform including: Registration and login, including login with ORCiD and reCaptcha An easy to use submission and article tracking system (document management system) Author profiles that can be made public Full peer review, copy editing, typesetting and proofreading stages Configurable email reminders for article review and revisions with multiple backends (including Mailgun) Crossref DOIs and Similarity Check integration A developer friendly plugin system RSS/Atom, OAI-PMH, and Rest API feeds COUNTER-compliant metrics capturing A full suite of management interfaces including Django's admin interface for super users.
