Librarians are very open to welcome anybody.same logic must be applied in other professions.A University Librarian is not eligible to be a professor in library science department as per UGC norms. But UGC finds Statistics professor to be Director INFLIBNET.Before we comment kindly do read advertisement published and also available on UGC website .Transparency is strength but it is none existent in this selection. INFLIBNET appontment
by Kailash Garg 22 Dec '18

22 Dec '18

Dear Sir, Few professionals have raised the issue of appointment of a non professional person as Director of INFLIBNET. Recently Dr. Sharmila Ghosh has written that Berkeley Labs are appointing students from social sciences for their research work I want to give an example from India. Professor Vishwatathan of IISc was appointed Director of INSDOC (now NISCAIR). I understand he was also a non professional like the present director of INFLIBNET. I don't understand why this hue and cry. Judge the individual by his works he does as director. Dear professional friends, It is too dangerous for our library community. This is not only one community's, even RBI also appointed non economist as a chief of RBI. Think if it is continues all sector's, how we will contribute to our society? Hope this type of appointment will stop in the future. e-library of rare books launched in Pune

Inspiring one ... http://borilib.com e-library of rare books launched in Pune - The Bhandarkar Oriental Research Institute The Hindu National The Bhandarkar Oriental Research Institute. Shoumojit Banerjee Pune 19 December 2018 21:26 IST Updated: 19 December 2018 22:36 IST BORI houses one of South Asia’s largest collection of rare manuscripts The Bhandarkar Oriental Research Institute (BORI), which houses one of South Asia’s largest and most invaluable agglomeration of rare manuscripts, opened its treasure vault digitally by launching an e-library of ancient religious and historical works on Wednesday. Nearly 1,000 rare books and manuscripts in Sanskrit and its related languages are presently available for readers worldwide to savour in this first phase of digitisation. The institute, named after legendary Indologist Ramkrishna Gopal Bhandarkar, was set up in 1917 and has in its possession nearly two-and-a-half-lakh rare books and manuscripts, some of them in an extremely brittle state. “The rationale behind the e-library is to preserve at least some of these books. Hence, we chose to digitise 20,000 among the rarest-of-the rare books and four to five thousand will be available for readers to read them online for free,” said noted Indologist Prof. Shrikant Bahulkar. Three fully-automated Zeutschel high-resolution German scanners were specially procured by the institute at a cost of ₹15 lakh each. “ We began with screening the two lakh-plus manuscripts to zero down on the ones we would digitise,” said Mithilesh Kulkarni of Nyansa, a firm specialising in heritage digitisation. Chinmay Bhandari of Nyansa said that the entire process was one of ‘non-destructive’ digitising, which ensured that even books in decrepit condition were preserved while scanning. “For the past two years, our 15-member team was working in three shifts every day and we digitised more than 3 lakh pages each month,” Mr. Bhandari said. Among the BORI’s notable publications are a 19-volume edition of The Mahabharata, collated with copious critical material, and legendary Sanskrit scholar P.V. Kane’s five-volume History of Dharmashastra (1930). “The work on the Mahabharata, universally acknowledged by scholars and researchers the world, is still on with the Cultural Index to the Mahabharata still being prepared under the guidance of scholar Dr. Ganesh Umakant Thite,” said Prof. Bahulkar. ————- Regards, Vasu Vasu M Deshpande, Easylib +91 97422 04624 www.finvensys.com www.easylibsoft.com -- This message has been scanned for viruses and dangerous content by MailScanner, and is believed to be clean.

Among these gadgets, a select few can be called great. IEEE Spectrum’s editors have chosen to enshrine 25 of them into the inaugural class of inductees to Spectrum’s own Consumer Electronics Hall of Fame. Some of these products launched a whole new category; others dazzled with their engineering; still others fundamentally changed the way we worked or played. Or they simply made it hard for us to remember what life was like without them. A couple of them—the smartphone, the personal computer—did all of the above. He is the author of “The Art of Computer Programming,” a continuing four-volume opus that is his life’s work. The first volume debuted in 1968, and the collected volumes (sold as a boxed set for about $250) were included by American Scientist in 2013 on its list of books that shaped the last century of science — alongside a special edition of “The Autobiography of Charles Darwin,” Tom Wolfe’s “The Right Stuff,” Rachel Carson’s “Silent Spring” and monographs by Albert Einstein, John von Neumann and Richard Feynman. Re: [LIS-Forum] Appointment of INFLIBNET Director: reg
by Anand Dodamani 19 Dec '18

Dear Colleagues, Shocked to see the reactions of some of my professional colleagues to the news of the appointment of New Director to the INFLIBNET. What is wrong in it? We all kept quite when many of the IITs/ NITs/ Central and State Universities in the country appointed Professors from other departments as the In-Charge/ HODs of the their libraries ; we maintained our silence when the institutes of eminanance in the country have reduced the Grade/ Academic Level of the librarians; we did nothing when many great institutions in the country have pushed the librarians from Academic to Administrative category. So, why there is an opposition now? Please think about our own inactions in the past. The Professional Associations both at the State and the National level have lost their voice and importance. We preach many things but, in practice we do nothing. Please correct me, if I am wrong. Regards, Anand Dodamani Mumbai. Dear Anand, You have absolutely nailed on the head, about what we preach and practice. We need to rectify all such anomalies by representing through AIFUCTO and various other (such) organizations. Otherwise, in the next pay revision (if any) we will definitely be placed in the non-teaching cadre by manipulating/altering entry level qualifications as it happened in the case of NITs and the like. -- Thanking You, Dr.M.Kannan,M.L.I.Sc.,PhD., & UGC-NET Librarian, V.O.Chidambaram College, Palaymkottai Road, Tuticorin - 628 008.
