Librarian as a Teacher in the e-Learning Ecosystem
by Sathyanarayana NV 26 Dec '18

26 Dec '18

Library-in-the-Classroom and Classroom-in-the-Library are concepts evolving in practice too in libraries around the world. There is an intrinsic synergy between the classroom and the library as both are the places for learning. Classroom is the place for teacher assisted learning and library facilitates self-learning. E-Learning offers the advantage of both self-learning and teacher-assisted-learning. This synergy, we can imagine, is likely to lead to convergence of the library and the classroom in the emerging digital world where learning will be extensively driven by e-Learning models. The natural advantage of this convergence is an imperative recognition of Librarianship in a teaching role. Hence, e-Learning, which is lot more than providing access to e-Content, demands keener attention by Librarians. Library Technology Conclave (LTC2019) is the first ever conference focusing on the subject of e-Learning as an extended functional role opportunity for libraries. This 3-day Conclave, conceived by Informatics India Ltd, is hosted by Cochin University of Science & Technology, Cochin, 23-25 January 2019. The 90-minute Roundtable on e-Learning at the Conclave will debate on the issues of synergy between and possible convergence of classroom and library. The Conclave will be anchored by Ms. Natasha Jog, former NDTV reporter and anchor who has anchored a program on e-Learning on NDTV. Register for the Conclave today and join us to learn and debate about the extended role of librarians as teachers in the emerging e-Learning ecosystem. Visit the LTC2019 website www.LTC2019.com <http://www.ltc2019.com/>to know more about the Conclave and register. *|**N. V. A report from The Center for Talent Innovation found that 52% of highly qualified women quit their jobs in science, engineering and technology. A separate study from AnitaB.org revealed that women leave tech companies two times faster than men do. In addition, 56% of the few women who work in tech leave by the time they have reached mid-level jobs, resulting in the fact that women are three times less likely to have senior technical roles than men. Why do they leave? To find out, Indeed.com conducted a survey that asked 1,000 women in technology why they had left previous jobs. It also asked them other questions about challenges they had experienced in the workplace and issues that were important to them. The results revealed nine key elements that play a role in women’s decisions to leave IT jobs. Interestingly, those reasons for leaving may not be the ones you expect. ICTD/ICT4D researchers, individually and collectively, place themselves in positions where their actions can have intended and unintended consequences and therefore they carry responsibility. Most ICTD/ICT4D researchers seek to behave ethically, but the complex interdisciplinary nature of the field, and its distinctive characteristics, including the emergent nature of technology, make it difficult for both new and experienced researchers to identify and reason about the ethical issues that surround their work. Individual researchers will refer to ethical guidance and debates within their own discipline. Re: [LIS-Forum] LIS-Forum Digest, Vol 189, Issue 34
by Anand Dodamani 24 Dec '18

24 Dec '18

Dear Dr. D. V. Singh Sir, I totally agree with your views. There must be some logic behind every action. Be it an appointment or promotion or any other thing. There are many instances in our field where the institutes/ universities have violated the norms set for the purpose. There is no transparency in recruitments. We all raise our voice (on online forums only) against such practices when they happen and forget about them after few days. I understand that it is not possible for any one individual to continue the fight against injustice for longer period of time considering his own personal and workplace commitments. But, the professional bodies such as ILA can do it. The representatives of these bodies have volunteered themselves (while contesting elections) to work for the betterment of the profession. But, I have not seen or heard any postings/ communications from any ILA representative on this or any other subject concerning the profession. The DISCUSSIONS are good but, ONLY DISCUSSIONS are not good. Can we expect any course of action from any professional body on this front? Can these professional bodies also work for the things other than conducting conferences and seminars? The appointment of an expert from some other field to one of the top posts in LIS is not the matter of concern; the matter of concern is the diminishing image of the librarians in the society. We need to change this trend.
