Dear LIS-Forum Member: I would like to bring the following few points to your kind attention and solicit your cooperation in the smooth running of LIS-Forum discussion list. 1. Posting messages to LIS-Forum list: -------------------------------------- On a rough average, 4-5 postings are received by LIS-Forum list everyday. The Content-type of most of these messages is "multipart/alternative". When the content-type of the mail you are sending happens to be multipart/alternative, it will be sent as an attachment as well. This will unnecessarily duplicate the message and in the process increase the size of the mail you are sending. Please *ensure* that while posting messages to lis-forum(a)ncsi.iisc.ernet.in, the Content-type of the mail you are sending is set to "text/plain" as indicated below. Content-Type: text/plain You may be aware that as a matter of LIS-Forum policy, no mails to lis-forum with attachments will be broadcasted. But, most of the lis-forum mails are being received with content-type being multipart/alternative, which means all such mails are being received with attachments. Although, you may not have explicitly attached a file to your message, because of the content-type being set to "multipart/alternative" you message is being received with attachments as well. I request you to check the content type of your mail, especially when it is being sent to lis-forum and ensure that it is set to text/plain. All along the way I have been treating such multipart mails is as follows: If I am too busy, I return such mails with a request that it should be re-sent without attachments. Many a times what I have been doing is that forward such messages to the owner of the list, do the required editing, re-post the messages to lis-forum@ncsi, and then broadcast such edited messages. That's the reason why many a times you would have noticed that postings seem to originate from mail@ncsi but not from the actual originator. As you can infer, all this editing process takes quite a bit of time and effort, which can be avoided, if you can ensure that mails meant for lis-forum@ncsi have their content-type set to text/plain. If you are not sure of how to verify and/or change the content type of your mail pl. get it clarified from your system administrator. 2. Junk mails: -------------- As you may be aware, LIS-Forum discussion list is a closed list meaning only subscribed members can post messages to this list. This feature works quite well in the latest version of the Mailman discussion list software that we use. Also, LIS-Forum is a moderated list meaning the messages posted to this list doesn't get broadcasted automatically. Only such of those messages approved by the moderator gets broadcasted. In spite of LIS-Forum being a closed and moderated list, occasionally a few "junk mails" (spams) do manage to sneak into LIS-Forum. Such junk mails are discarded outright by the LIS-Forum moderator. To the best of my knowledge such messages have never been broadcasted on LIS-Forum. One peculiar thing that I am unable to understand is that the messages from *lisnet(a)yahoogroups.com* are being received by LIS-Forum list for distribution. Such messages will have its subject as: Subject: [lisnet] ...... I'm discarding such messages outright. People who have subscribed to both LIS-Forum and LISNET lists, tend to think that such junk mails are coming from LIS-Forum. I have received a couple of complaints from some of our members that membership of people originating such junk messages be removed from LIS-Forum list. I would like to clarify that such messages are not being originated by any of LIS-Forum members. Such junk messages are being sent fictitiously and the email addresses of originators such messages are not to be found in the LIS-Forum membership list. We are trying to set right a few minor problems that we are facing with the latest version of mailing list management software. Please do bear with us. SSCI Index : some observations

Many times when questions are specfic to a single user I used to reply directly to the inquirer: the logic for this approach was >not to bother others with what they may not need; >not to flood the list with 'use-less!' material; >a desire not be seen in the forum too often, lest people think 'Oh, this fellow does not seem to have any other work' etc Now considering the nature of any Discussion Forum users and usage patterns, I tend to think all replies may be sent to the List so that others would benefit too. Again when one evaluates a Forum and its usefulness before joining or discontinuing, one would look at the length of the threads of discussions. If there are far too many questions that have been left un-answered (though in fact they have been answered directly as indicated in my case) users may feel discouraged; they might feel that this forum is inactive; people do not co-operate etc. I have another moot observation to make: SSCI is available apprantly in SNDT, IGDIR, NASSDOC, TISS, Bhim Rao Ambedkar University, IIM-Indore etc. Ironically, the replies have come persons not from any of the SSCI holding institutions but from persons who took the pains to look up union catalogs elsewhere and send in replies. I know for sure that atleast a few of the holding institutions ARE members of the Lis-Forum -- Why did they not respond? Of great interest. ---------- Forwarded message ---------- RELEASE Developed five years ago as a new service in the Regensburg University Library for using electronic scientific and scholarly journals, the EZB (Electronic Journal Library/Elektronische Zeitschriftenbibliothek) has developed rapidly in the areas of scholarship and research. In that time, more than 200 research libraries and research institutes in Germany and others elsewhere in Europe have joined the service. Now the Library of Congress, the leading library in the United States and the largest library in the world, has joined as a new member. The EZB has in the process won a powerful international partner. Made aware of the impressive range and quality of the collection and the userfriendly presentation of over 14,000 electronic journals, the Library of Congress wanted to broaden its experience with this innovative library service. Their representatives were especially taken with the division of labor in the organization of the EZB. Specifically, the full text scholarly journals were gathered on a cooperative basis by all the members in a central database operated in Regensburg. The metadata needed for use of the journals was managed in common. Only through the collaboration of many partners can the quality and availability of the data be assured for the long term. The Regensburg University Library constructed the technical and management infrastructure required for the enterprise. Thanks to the support of the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft and the German government's Ministry for Education and Research, the service can be continually adjusted and developed for new demands. The Library of Congress invited the Regensburg University Library to visit Washington in January of this year for a demonstration of the service onsite and to discussion the possibilities for cooperation. In April, the Library of Congress decided to employ the opportunities of cooperation with this service and to take part in the common effort. A common exchange of data will be carried out, which will bring appreciable advantages for both parties. The Library of Congress is able to offer its users improved and more expansive access to electronic journals and at the same time the EZB enriches itself with a considerable number of titles. Through the new partnerships we have a most promising opportunity to esbalish the EZB beyond Europe as the largest collection of scholarly online journals in the world. That should further increase the already intensive use - in the last year, 6.4 million requests for titles were logged - still further. Going forward, the Library of Congress and the Regensburg University Library (representing the EZB) have joined in other aspects of collaboration. One challenging aspect of the cooperation will be to develop common international standards for the development of this new form of publication and the technical experience that will allow for an efficiently automated data exchange. The goals include also a mutual exchange of know-how in the acquisition and licensing of electronic journals. We have made a beginning in a very promising international partnership.
