Date: 28 Jun 2004 07:06:32 -0000 From: Rajesh K Patil <rajeshbcd(a)rediffmail.com> Hi, It's a good suggestion but one should note that the British Council Libraries are not subject to Indian system of Audit procedures. In general they have a zero growth policy i.e. if a library adds 1000 titles in a year, the same number of titles are withdrawn. As you are based in New Mumbai you can contact the British Council Library in Mumbai personally and discuss the matter in detail. First and foremost the consent of the Management and the Internal and External Auditors need to be obtained. Developing and implementing internal library policies for weeding will not be cumbersome. It can be based on certain factors viz. : - Obsolete title - Superseded titles - Usage statistics - Damaged books Regards. I am in particular interested in knowing the criteria being used for weeding out in different libraries in India, like a. how do we decide what to weed ? b. how much should we weed ? (what percentage of library collection and frequency) I would also like to know if there are any rules or procedures specified by the government about such processes by libraries in India, or in any particular state (with reference to audits and accounts). Since my library comes in the science domain, policies and criteria of libraries within the S & T domain would be of great help. Date: 25 Jun 2004 03:51:45 -0000 From: thejasvi tv <tvthejasvi(a)rediffmail.com> Members, www.elibraryhub.com seems to be one of the best sites relating to e-library. you may please check it out. An article had appeared in The Hindu on 24 June in appreciation of this. Its a round the clock library and functions without the virtual prescence of a librarian. All the library activities are carried out mechanically without human interface. I request all professionals to comment on this kind of library. Its presently in Singapore. Regards, Thejasvi.

Friends: All Indian libraries currently providing Internet facility can also extend/provide WiFi free access to their users. WiFi is now a matured technology and even a non-technical person can put the WiFi setup in less than 10K after some efforts.
