Kerala's oldest library is manned by lepers Alleppy (Kerala) | July 23, 2004 3:14:59 PM IST http://www.webindia123.com/news/showdetails.asp?id=43686&cat=India Believe it or not! Lepers are manning an old library in Kerala's Alleppy District. The library is said to house a huge stock of ancient books, records and a huge stock of 16th century palm leaf manuscripts situated in Alleppy district with a collection of some ancient books, records and palm leaf manuscripts dating back to the 16th century. Run by the Leprosy Sanatorium, the library is presently home to about 400 lepers who have been tasked with the responsibility of looking after the rare books and manuscripts. K.G, Narayan, a leprosy patient and caretaker of the library, said that though there are several old records and manuscripts, maintenance is a problem as there are very few educated patients left. "Here we have many kinds of old records and manuscripts and the paintings inside are all drawn by the patients. We preserve it and take great care of the manuscripts. Most of the educated in- patients have already left the sanatorium, here there is no one to man this place now," he said. There are nearly four million leprosy patients in the country, and they are amongst the high-risk communities in need of massive support. (ANI) Believe it or not! Dear Professionals, Following news item which appeared in The Times of India (12-08-2004) needs attention of LIS Community: We have to be very cautious even if we plan to destroy print books and journals after buying e-version/digitising of concerned documents. In this case reason mentioned is not digitising. ICSSR `transforms' itself: Dumps burns journals, books By Akshaya Mukul/TNN New Delhi: Prospective researchers beware: Do not venture anywhere near the documentation centre and library of the Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR), for it has dumped - some say even burnt - thousands of Indian and foreign academic journals, books, dissertations, census reports and gazettes from its priceless collection. Also, a piece of advice to President APJ. Abdul Kalam, who on Thursday delivers the ICSSR's prestigious Vikram Sarabhai memorial lecture on 'Dynamics of Societal Transformation'. Pause for a while and ask ICSSR if transformation means cutting off old ties. For ICSSR has done precisely that. Rationale: Its National Social Science Documentation Centre (NASSDOC) has been transformed and moved to an ultra-modern building which presumably had no space for these works. In real terms, insiders in NASSDOC say, the loss has been immense. It had a collection of nearly two lakh Indian and foreign periodicals/journals of which barely 15,000 to 20,000 have survived. NASSDOC also had a collection of nearly 40,000 books of which barely 10,000 are left. From its collection of thousands of PhD dissertations collected from all over the country, barely 800 have made it to the new building. A large number were burnt and the remaining are in an advanced state of decay in ICSSR's godown. How has it affected ICSSR's standing as a repository of all knowledge in social science? From its collection of journals/periodicals, it used to cater to researchers all over the world. Any researcher could ask for a photocopy of articles which ICSSR used to send on a small payment. Similarly, dissertations were bought from all over the country by ICSSR after paying a small amount to the researcher. In turn, these dissertations became reference material for others. But for the past few months, scholars from India and abroad have been doing the rounds of NASSDOC only to be told to come later. ICSSR has even stopped buying dissertations. ICSSR chairman VR. Panchamukhi who, despite having a questionnaire from this reporter, dwelt for more than an hour on how he has changed everything for good, is an acquaintance of PM Manmohan Singh. He was unsure about the crucial question and asked ICSSR's directors, in front of this reporter, on what had happened. Panchamukhi then repeated what they told him: "Nothing has been burnt. There was very little space ... so may be books, journals and dissertations were dumped here ... Some even gifted to our institutions in Allahabad and Mhow." But he added: "I will set up an inquiry to find out who did it." The answer came from one of his senior associates who opposed the dumping move and drew the parallel from the burning of the library of Alexandria: "The mystery would exist not for lack of suspects but from an excess of them." -- -------------------------------------------------------------------------- I.R.N. by Dr. T.B. Rajashekar 12 Aug '04

12 Aug '04

Dear Members I hope you have gone through this message sent yesterday (given below) - else I request you to kindly go through the same. We seek your cooperation in making LIS-Forum a useful mailing list. Mr. Francis Jayakanth, who was moderating LIS-Forum all these days, is now away on Fulbright Fellowship in USA. Ms. K. Thulasi, another technical staff member of NCSI, has taken over the role of moderator. There could be minor glitches during the transition period - please bear with us. Thanks and regards Rajashekar ------------------------------------------------------------- Dr. T.B. However, we would like to bring the following points to your attention in order to make lis-forum reach a wider audience. 1. Since many lis-forum members use text-based e-mail clients to read their e-mails, we request all members who wish to send messages to lis-forum for distribution, to send them in plain text form only. Messages in html and other non-text formats require editing by the moderator to convert these to plain text. Since number of postings to lis-forum is increasing, we find it very difficult to spend time on this. Henceforth, messages, which are not in plain text format, will be returned to the sender and will not be approved for distribution. If you are using web-based mail clients, please configure them to format and send messages in plain text format, when you send messages to lis-forum. 2. We also request you not to send any attachments with your message. Sometimes we receive messages also as attachments! Since attachments may carry viruses and since we cannot be opening each attachment to check the contents, we request you to ensure that the body of your mail contains your message in plain text form and that there are no attachments. You may request interested forum members to contact you directly to receive any attachments. Henceforth, messages with attachments will be returned to the sender and will not be approved for distribution. Increasingly many organizations use spam mail filter programs on their mail servers. Many of these are configured to eliminate non-text messages and messages with attachments. This is another good reason why you should avoid these in your mails! And finally, please post messages only to lis-forum(a)ncsi.iisc.ernet.in and not to mailman(a)ncsi.iisc.ernet.in since this account is basically meant for lis-forum owner for administrative purpose. Please co-operate for the smooth and efficient running of the lis-forum!
