Differential Pricing for Books in Foreign Currency
by I.R.N.Goudar 18 Aug '04

18 Aug '04

Dear friends, The differencial pricing for books in foreign currency has become a matter of concern to librarians, especially after EU adopted currency Euro. I wish to share our experience and invite your experience, comments, suggestions in the matter. Recently we purchased "Handbook of Nanotechnology" by Bhushan, B published by Springer(ISBN : 3-540-01218-4). While processing processing the invoice, we have noticed the following discrepancies : 1. The price mentioned in the invoice (EURO 249.00) and the price mentioned by the requester (USD 199.00) although different both are correct. 2. The price proof produced by the vendor, taken from the WEB (URL not given) 3. We visited the Springer site at http://www.springeronline.com/ and noticed different prices when checked depending upon the route as follows - Europe General, Asia, Africa: EURO 249.00 Germany: EURO 266.43 United Kingdom: Pound 191.50 North America, South America: USD 199.00 Switzerland: SFr 421.00 4. Amazon sells this book at the price USD 199.00, As you can see there is a huge difference in price of about Rs 5000. When enquired the vendors tell us that they procure through European sources and hence charge in EURO. Even if we give handling and postage charges to Amazon we not only save good amount, but get the document faster. In this particular case since the basic cost is more Amazon could be a solution. But why should we give such high prices? Can we not force the publishers to adopt single price? Why not Vendors use their US contacts to supply books at US $ price? Another interesting thing we notice is some Vendors publish the publishers catalogue locally to suit them. This is the case with journals too. We face problems while passing the bills as our accounts raise objections in such cases. How should we satisfy audits? One possibility is that we can demand the original invoice received by Vendors from publishers. Friends you too would have come across many such situations. Your reactions please! Dear Friends: Sometime ago I forwarded a few announcements regarding vacancies for Librarians that appeared in 'unusual' channels. Quite a few have taken advantage of this. However many have sent copies of their resume/biodata to me as well. I have absolutely nothing to do with such advertisements except that I have forwarded them to lis-forum. Kindly do NOT send resumes to me. To avoid confusion, I am also explicitly indicating at the bottom of my postings: "sent by" above my signature. Those interested in knowing about library vacancies may see www.naukri.com, www.monster.com etc. Quite a few do appear there. RE: [LIS-Forum] Lalu urged to launch library in trains
by Vyasamoorthy＠icicikp.com 18 Aug '04

18 Aug '04

Dear Friends Please refer to replies of Smt Vasumati, Dr GK Manjunath and Henag on the above topic. AH Wheeler has the large(st) network of railway station bookstalls in India. AHW or some such network can Collaborate with Railways and run "sales-cum-loans" extension counters in long distance trains. Audio video CD printed books and magazines may be sold and/or hired. Entire cost of a book is paid in advance. If you want to retain the book you just walk away. If you have finished the book and want to return it you can do it and pay only a lending fee (get back bulk of your money). This way the bookseller can reach a larger number of customers. Railways can provide book space for stalls or libraries inside trains without really investing on stocks. Maintenance cost of in-train libraries by contract employees can be borne by railways or shared with book shop network. There is no point in talking these things among ourselves. Lalu must be informed through proper channel! Can someone influential in Delhi take it up? Regards Vyasamoorthy, P

This cannot run for long as the reading habit in general people is very very less, those who like to read carry their own book or purchase from the platform vendors or hawkers and build their own collection at home after reading in train.Reading book from library may not work . Rather they can plan for a stall cum library in each long distance train which may be beneficial and may be successful.Stall cum Library should have audio /video facility which will attract people , specially the young generation .Instead of buying book/ cassettes from Platform they will buy from the stall. Stall also should have facility for cassette player which maybe given on rent and the deposit should be kept so that they would return. Also they need to publicize a lot, on each compartment there should be an advertisement mentioning about it, so that everyone knows about it. Libray /stall compartment should be painted differently so that it attracts people and generates the awareness of the containers. Years ago - in the mid 1970s- the Coromandel Express running between (then) - Calcutta and Madras had this facility. You "bought" a book and when you returned it to the "library" - you were refunded the cost of the book less a reading fee. But for some reason, the scheme ran only for a year or two and was withdrawn. It would really be good to have such a facility on all long distance trains. NACLIN 2004
by Mailing List Manager 17 Aug '04

17 Aug '04

Date: Mon, 16 Aug 2004 16:03:14 +0100 (WETS) From: "Sangeeta Kaul, Network Manager, DELNET" <sangs(a)delnet.ren.nic.in> Seventh National Convention on Library and Information Networking NACLIN 2004 Theme Quality Information in the Internet Era November 23-26, 2004 Venue University of Pune, Pune Jointly Organised by DELNET Developing Library Network Jayakar Library 40, Max Mueller Marg Dept. of Lib. & Inf. Sc. Lodhi Estate University of Pune New Delhi-110003 Pune - 411007 E-mail : hkkaul(a)delnet.ren.nic.in E-mail: skpatil(a)unipune.ernet.in Web : www.delnet.nic.in Web: www.unipune.ernet.in Quality Information in the Internet Era The major concern today for libraries is that the users, including the students and teachers, have begun to use Web resources for everything. They gain access to a large number of resources without understanding that most of the content on the Web is not peer-reviewed. But there is variety on the Web, they can easily download the content, shape it and finally use it. These Web resources are mostly self-published and subjective in nature. The users do not have the patience to do extensive research in order to get an objective view on a given issue. As the number of hits on a given subject on the Web are generally very large in number, the users cannot go through all of them. The users, thus, access a few hits, collect some information and use it. As a result, the use of the traditional libraries has begun to decline in certain subject areas and if remedial measures are not taken it will be difficult for the users to get access to quality information. This trend, on one hand, is reducing the capacities of researchers for research and on the other, affecting the role of libraries as the centres of knowledge. The libraries need to grow as Knowledge Centres and use methods that evolve high quality information in their given fields. The Librarians and Infor mation Officers will have to develop critical assessment skills and have to gain access to virtual and printed collections through networks, search engines, subject guides, directories, meta-indexes, and through other resources on the Web. Evaluation of Internet resources in each discipline is going to be a specialised job in future. It will include the defining of selection criteria including the organisation of selected material and a host of technical methodologies that will enable the users to have a ccess to quality information. The Librarians and Information Officers need to monitor regularly the growth of Information Technology tools and techniques. It is with this concern that the National Convention on Library and Information Networking (NACLIN 2004) being organised by DELNET in collaboration with the University of Pune is going to discuss various issues on the subject. DELNET-Developing Library Network DELNET, a major resource-sharing library network in South Asia covers a wide spectrum of member-libraries and their resources. DELNET is committed to pool the information about resources scattered in the libraries in the country and consolidate informatio n through union catalogues, union lists and other databases. This is being done to satisfy the major information requirements of students, researchers, scholars and the public in the country. DELNET services also support the research activities in India a s we regularly supply suitable content and information materials to libraries and their users. DELNET has now more that 750 member institutions in India and outside India. The DELNET database resources have now reached around four million records. The DEL NET services have become more popular in the country especially with the effective Interlibrary Loan and Document Delivery Services which are provided to libraries across the country and also to the member-libraries outside the country. ABOUT THE UNIVERSITY OF PUNE -THE HOST The University of Pune, the leading university in India was established as a result of long and sustained demand for a separate university in Maharashtra. The university made a humble beginning in 1949 with 8 postgraduate centres with 180 students and 23 affiliated colleges with 8,000 undergraduate students.
